‪As bad as its reputation suggested‬
بمفردك • أكتوبر 2021
‪This place has got a really famous reputation locally in recent years for the way they’ve let the property go, and the fact they spend hardly any money on it.
Far from being custodians of a grand country Estate and investing accordingly, the tight inheritors install the cheapest everything and it shows. If you want a day out at a nice country Estate, there are plenty of other options. Everything here screams cheap and tacky. Really disappointing for a lovely village.
Appalling animal rights reputation too. They literally use the land to invite rich cronies to hunt and abuse animals. Shame they don’t instead invest and give it a bit of TLC.‬

We were very disappointed to read your review, which appears to be well out of line with the overwhelmingly positive feedback that the Estate receives on this site and elsewhere – including from the local community. Without wishing to blow our own trumpet, we would agree with the article in the Times last month about a walk around the Estate, that described ‘beautifully maintained countryside, giving off a whiff of money well spent’. Tens of thousands of pounds are invested annually in the wider Estate, so that hundreds of thousands of visitors can enjoy its many miles of public rights of way and open spaces, as well as Penshurst Place and Gardens itself. If you have any concerns about how the Estate is run you are of course welcome to get in touch with us directly rather than through this site – especially if you have concerns about animal welfare. We are committed to protecting and preserving the natural environment on this historic landed estate, and place great importance on maintaining an environment where wildlife can thrive (for example consulting with the Kent Wildlife Trust on protected boundaries to safeguard against dogs and other natural predators, and supporting insects and wider ecology through tree and wildflower planting). No estate is run perfectly and we’re always open to constructive feedback, so do drop us an email or pick up the phone to our Estate Manager (contact details are on our website). Looking forward to hearing from you!

‪Autumnal Atmospheric Private Group Visit of House and Gardens‬
الأصدقاء • أكتوبر 2021
‪We had a fantastic private guided tour, and greeted with a pre tour tea, coffee and cakes and a roaring fire in the exceptional unaltered 14th Century Barons Hall. I am a Blue Badge Tour Guide myself and Penshurst is certainly an unbeatable authentic historic experience of a home and gardens in the same family since 1552. I have to say the setting of Penshurst and its genuine feeling of history left all of our group of 12 knowing the visit was a very special experience thanks to our excellent guide Suzanne.‬

‪Where history was made‬
بمفردك • سبتمبر 2021
‪There’s something for everyone at penshurst, the young too the old. The house has so much history plus the room guides were so knowledgeable and chatty, your given a information sheet for each room as room notes are not available at the moment. The gardens are looking blooming and you would never tell covid as caused cut backs on the gardeners as their so well looked after. I Visited mid September and a lot of colour welcomed me. There’s also a playground for the kiddies, a cafe, gift and plant shop plus it’s really reasonable and definitely worth the entrance price as there’s so much to see and do. It may not be so well known as it’s closest cousin hever but it’s definitely on par.‬

‪Quite lovely‬
سبتمبر 2021
‪It was a beautiful day which in the summer of 2021 was a rarity but what luck that we chose it to visit Penshurst Place. It looked quite exquisite nestled amongst the woods and hills and the gardens were sublime, way in excess of our expectations. Add to that the fascinating ancient house and it was a day to remember. We were there for three hours and could have spent twice that time. A wonderful glimpse i to Englands history and a thoroughly interesting day.‬

‪Lovely Afternoon.‬

‪Very pleasant afternoon spent here. Reasonable cost and a decent amount of the building to look at for the fee. Gardens sort of over now but still well worth a visit.‬

‪Interesting house, beautiful gardens!‬

‪Very interesting old house, once owned by Henry VIII. Loved the 18 gardens, which all have different themes. Such a lovely place to spend a few hours.‬

Hello debbiequested, thank you for visiting us and for your kind review. Our commitment is first and foremost to visitor safety and so we have continued to ask all visitors who are able to, to wear a mask indoors, as well as leaving ample hand sanitiser stations throughout the site, and perspex screens where required. I'm pleased to read that this was well-received by you during your visit. I do hope we can welcome you back soon.

‪Spend your money elsewhere‬
أغسطس 2021
‪Nice gardens (those that are being maintained anyway). Nice playground for the kids. Expensive cafe - £5.50 for 2 small scones and a miniature jar of jam and cream for example. Toilets closed, disabled access is extremely poor. Pretty easy to address by providing ramps, portable or permanent. The 'Toy Museum' really doesn't contain enough exhibits or information to call itself a museum - it's more of a small collection, housed in one room that seems only to be accessible by a flight of steep steps. No good for the disabled or those with poor mobility.

The public is limited to a very small selection of rooms in the house, only ONE of which is accessible to wheelchairs. One of two downstairs rooms simply contains a few photographs of the cast of 'Wolf Hall' and a couple of cabinets produced for the series. That's it. This room is not accessible to wheelchair users, but, quite frankly, they aren't missing anything.

Similar photos are used as 'fillers' in the upstairs 'State Rooms'.
The upstairs 'State Rooms' - I think there were 4 of them) are extremely sparsely populated with exhibits spread out to try and give the impression that there are more than there actually are and I'm pretty sure that staff (volunteers?) were the oldest things in a couple of the rooms.

However, should you be a wheelchair user, or have limited mobility, you can view a DVD of the tour upon request......

Entry to House and Gardens cost us £13 each today and was £7 per child aged 5 to 15. Gardens only were £11 for adults and £6.50 for children. There are family tickets available but these give a meagre saving of £4 for a family of 2 adults & 2 children. Given the incredible limitations in access for wheelchair users and those with limited/poor mobility, I believe that it's actually outrageous to charge them anything for access. I understand that carers get in free, but this doesn't mitigate these limitations.

The gardens are nice to wander around but £11/£6.50 per person for a nice picnic spot is pretty steep.‬

Dear Mark, Thank you for your review and for visiting us here at Penshurst Place. I’m sorry to read that after your visit you felt we were simply a nice picnic spot. With 11 acres of beautiful formal gardens, a medieval house and centuries of history behind us, we are much more than that. As a listed building, we are somewhat limited as to the alterations we can make to accommodate our visitors with accessibility issues, though we acknowledge there is always more one can do to ensure all visitors are informed and confident about adjustments to their visit, before they head out, and we will be reviewing how we communicate this information. That leads me to address your issues with the House itself, and whilst I could happily talk through the period furniture and the family portraits in the House and their historical importance to the owners and indeed the nation, you overstepped the line from a constructive review to an insulting one with your offensive comment about our (paid) members of staff. Outside of their working hours, our staff read, research and learn about the Sidney family at Penshurst Place and we are incredibly grateful for their loyalty and passion for our history, the family, and our team. Your comment has negated any positive impact you might have intended to make.

‪Nice for a wander round ‬
زوجان • أغسطس 2021
‪This is privately run and noticeably different from similar National Trust properties. I’d give 3.5 if I could!

There are few rooms open in the main house and due to covid, not a lot of info available. We found this a little odd as there were numbers on many of the paintings, but no key anywhere to let you know what you’re looking at. They said they’ve had to take out laminated copies for each room, but you’d think a sign up would be fairly easy for people to read if they’re interested.
Some rooms had excellent signage - it was rather inconsistent!

In the Barons hall there’s a picture painted ‘fairly recently’ (i.e 20-30 years ago?) with the late Queen Mother present. It has an excellent key telling you who all the visitors are, but no indication of date, or the reason for the gathering given! Really odd!

The gardens are lovely, a mixture of formal and places to admire ‘set pieces’ of flowerbeds, places for children to play and watch the fish.

It was fairly well laid out for visitors. We didn’t use the toilets or cafe but we felt a reasonable price for what we received. Young children were enjoying the adventure playground which looked great for little ones. ‬
