‪I walk the tracks. Done all but the link and the red tape track. There are quite a few tracks, some easy while some are quite a work out. There is something for everyone and any fitness.

The horse track is the muddiest and I don't think many people do that track; it's not that easy and shoes get muddy and wet. On the plus side there is a little more forest than other walks. The Ramaroa track starts with a nice bit of bush but then just becomes farm land with sheep, it has a lot of stream crossings but if you hop on the rocks you can keep you shoes dry. The Kouka/rocks track is nothing but grass and sheep. Catchment track is a bit boring as you are just walking along an old fence and there it's nothing but grass and it's quite steep. The 5ways track and the east ridge tracks are the easiest ways to get up onto old Mills road. The area around the dell would make a nice picnic spot. There are tables around the dell, another at Ti Kouka, another where 5ways meets East ridge track, a couple around ramaroa wetland and a few just past the car park; I've probably forgotten others too.

I like the Kohekohe forest in May/June that are in flower with the Tuis chattering away. You also see a lot of fantails that follow you a bit around the forest and the stream. There isn't that much Kohekohe forest but it's still nice to breathe the fresh air and look up.

If you're after a view then I think the rocks would have the best view, it's the highest point on the farm at about 360m.‬

‪There are a variety of walking and biking trails. Access is carpark on
left of highway just before Paekakariki. We have previously visited and explored the lower stream area with some lovely picnic spots. We also walked up to the lookout which has great views. Well worth the walk. This time we did the Forest Loop Walk which heads up towards the lookout but then through lovely bush. Information stations and weta houses along the way were interesting. The walk comes out into the main biking/walking track. We then did a further stream loop track near there with great views before heading back down the main track to car park. Well worth visiting. Plenty of walk and picnic options, great views. Toilets available. We will explore here further.

‪Great run to the top of the farm trail. Very stretching to do it pace, approx 30 mins to the top with no real let up in incline. Paths are good although a few streams at the bottom to negotiate and can be slippery in places after heavy rain. Views from the top worth the effort.‬

‪We drove to the carpark near the doc information centre and then took the walk to the US Marines camp area. The trail is across paddocks so look out for sheep!
The views were simply stunning, looking across to QE2 park and to the coastline. It is a good vantage point to see the new expressway roadworks going on at the Mackays crossing end.
You can walk to the top of the ridge if you are feeling energetic.
A good place to take kids to burn off some energy.‬

‪There is a car park just off the motor way and a round trip to the top of the hill and down again. This walk also looks like it is used for mountain bikes also although we didn't see any. This is an easy uphill walk with nice views. Take a water bottle as you may need it. No shops around.‬

‪Whareroa Farm is run by the Department of Conservation and is free to walk the defined walkways.
It was a private farm and still runs cattle and sheep but it is now open to the public to walk through the native forest from low growing flaxes to large trees such as Kohekohe.
It has a long Maori history. Many pa around this rich area of land, fairly close to the sea.
Throughout the walk there are 'weta houses' - small boxes where often you may see a weta. There are traps, too to catch rats and mice.
Our DOC guide, Jan, explained they trap these rodents to prevent bird's eggs and chicks being eaten.
We heard Bell Birds and saw Kereru and Tui.
Quite a magical place to be so close to State Highway One. Walking up to the top of the hill - a marvellous view across farmland, the highway and out to sea.‬
