My experience renting a car is usually pretty cut & dry. Some places are slightly better, some slightly worse. But this was different…
What a wonderful experience! The owners were so welcoming, warm, and helpful. Working with them was a true pleasure! Everything the car itself was perfect, as was the price. Highly recommended!

Had to take the time to review this beautiful church. Exceptionally preserved and Claudiu made the church even more interesting telling us its full history. Absolutely wonderful

It is simply out of this world! To think that only 100km from Brasov you have this small village which seems to be from the 1950. Absolutely wonderful

The village of Viscri - was put on the map of the world by King Charles (former Prince of Wales who has a property here and visits almost every year.) - however long before the Prince of Wales decided to find his Transylvanian roots, this little village has been part of the history of these lands.
The fortified Saxon church , one of the landmarks of this village - part of the UNESCO world heritage since 1999 - is definitely worth some time to explore it.
Entrance fee is pocket friendly (12 Ron - about 3 Euros).
The original church - a roman style building - was standing on the top of the hill at the time the Saxon settlers arrived , around 1100 at the request of the Hungarian king ... remember till 1918 this whole region was part of the kingdom of Hungary and later part of the Austrian-Hungarian empire for about 1000 year (give or take several decades).
So the Saxons arrived, took there lands in possession and built a fortification around the church, with towers , fortified walls with battlements, a main gate tower and the spaces to store food and tools in time of peril.
Today the visitor can see that heritage, still preserved (pity the majority of the Saxons leaved the country after WWII) to this day ... but it is very interesting.
Also I recommend you climb the church tower - it is an adventure through the narrow portions of the corridor, but well worth it.
Overall a very good experience - the lack of a tour guide dimmed the experience, so if you can I recommend try a guided tour - there are so many things to see and understand at this place.
Enjoy ... it is well worth the time and money spent.

Francesca
Hello, I would like to know if arriving in Viscri after 6 pm you can still visit the fortified village and if the shops that sell handicrafts are open. Does the opening time only refer to the church? Thanks so much. Francesca

Hi everyone, I would love to visit Viscri, but will be renting a car for my trip in Romania. I know that there is a bumpy road leading to Viscri, but I'm not sure how bumpy it is. Is it paved, but just needs to be repaved? Rental cars aren't allowed to be taken off-road. Would it be considered off road to go to Viscri, where I would be in trouble with the rental car company for damages? I would appreciate any information you can provide. Thank you.

As the others have stated the road from Bunesti is pretty shoddy, tarmac, but some mega pot holes, although by no means impassable just allow yourself plenty of time. Certainly it was fine in our hire car. if anything the road out from Viscri to Rupea, via Dacia is better. It is a white road (unpaved), but in pretty good condition (if very dusty in dry weather of course)

Dear Xandra m
I visited Viscri last weeks.
It took one hour to visit the fortified church (church itself+museum+Saxon cemetery) and 30 minutes/one hour to stroll around in the village.
You can take two/three hour to have a wonderful visit in Viscri, but my advice is to overnight there: that will be an unforgettable experience
