‪This place is a must to visit, tar seal road all the way to the top,
was so interesting how they mined for the coal and sent it down the hill, stunning views from the top of the plateau
Lots of information to read would have been an incredible working site.‬

‪Seeped in local history, a free must do in Denniston just north of Westport.
You can park up in your fully self contained camper.‬

‪Part of West Coast history we took the drive up the hill from the main road (a good sealed road albeit a good climb and some twists and turns to get to the top). The views were spectacular, some great reading and exhibits to look over. I even found some small bits of the coal they would have originally been seeking out back in the day.
A neat side trip for us and really glad we visited. Something I would recommend if you can make the time. Most of this is outdoors, so ideally a day without rain would be best and to appreciate the views if you can.
I will let some of the photos do the talking.‬

‪You need a few hours here. So much to read, and see. Very educational as well as interesting. Highly recommended free activity. The road up to the site is very windy, but fun!‬

‪So worth a visit. Very interesting and eerie place. A once bustling coalmining town left untouched. A town made for coalminers brought from overseas. Interesting reading plaques of the hardships they faced. Spent a couple of hours up there doing some of the walks‬

‪Despite all we knew of Denniston, our visit here was a pleasant surprise, helped, no doubt, by the sunny day which provided an expansive view up and down the Coast. Tangible history, on an unexpected scale, with interpretation boards that brought everything to life. Well served by parking and toilets. Was definitely worth the long steep drive up from the Coast below!‬

‪This is a definite must do if in the area. So much history about coal mining in New Zealand that I think everyone should have some understanding of. There is so much information about the area and the people who worked here with photos and remnants of buildings and the coal mining equipment. It is an easy walk to do and you could easily spend an hour here looking at everything. It is also an amazing view from up here so bring a camera.‬

‪This place is amazing - the history of it all is gob-smacking. We'd read about the work and living of the miners and their families before going - but the realism is much more than a few words. How the people managed I have no idea - just getting up and down the mountain must have been exhausting - especially for the women with shopping and kids. It's a place that you should have a bit of research before going - then the reality just means that much more. I'm a person who has a terrible fear of heights and the road up kept me on edge - it's just a road but the drop off the side was just a touch horrifying. Nevertheless I'm glad I went up and highly recommend everybody with the chance does so as well. Makes us glad we have the lifestyle we do! Tough men, women and children lived and worked here.‬

‪A sober reminder of how hard life must have been for our ancestors all those years' ago. Hats off to those responsible for preserving our heritage. ‬

‪Don't miss it! We had an amazing morning at Denniston, we couldn't believe the work that has gone into the interpretation panels, tracks and generally the 'telling of the tale" compared to when we last visited 26 years ago. It was a beautiful morning so we were treated to the wonderful view all the way to he Coast.
Take the time to visit the school, it has a small museum, which is a collection of bits and pieces, lots of photographs and a very helpful and friendly custodian.
We also on the advice of the DOC man went to the bottom of the incline and had our picnic lunch, this was where the coal was shipped out to Westport, down a gravel track which was a definite to do.‬
