‪Amazing place a must see to visit. We spent hours in the school house, viewing photos lots to take in must have been a thriving township tucked way up therr.‬

‪Even thought the Denniston mine experience was closed when we went it was still worth the trip up the tar-sealed winding road. The views are wonderful but to truly see the Denniston mining town site and imagine the hardships of living and working here is incredible. The step incline that the coal was transported down is staggering. This is one of those site-seeing experiences that you may be considering wether or not to go to, as we did, but it is well worth the few extra kilometres to see it.‬

‪I think a tour maybe better here, didnt think there was much there but I guess you need to know where to look. We were told there was lots to see and found very little. The steep incline was pretty cool but the rest it just rubble which was a shame.‬

‪An incredible view from so high up, you’re in the clouds. The history of the coal mine and village is so interesting. It’s a pity it wasn’t preserved more.‬

‪Coal mining is a major industry / employer in the Westport / Buller District of the south island. In this area it's high quality metallurgical (coking) coal that's mined, exported, and used in the production of steel – for which there is no known substitute. And the visitor to the area has the opportunity to witness coal mining close-up by taking an Outwest Tour around the Stockton mine, up on the Denniston plateau, to watch the various activities involved in extracting coal from an open-cut mine. The excursion lasted several hours, was very cheap, and our driver/guide was extremely knowledgeable. Fantastic experience. ‬

‪You walk amongst the remains of an immense mining achievement, the huge wheels scattered somehow, the yawning chasm of the railway incline, the memories of the lives lived there. Well worth the winding road journey up there. ‬

‪The view from the top is worth the drive but the stories of the miners and families you can read about is very interesting. A piece of West Coast history. Follow it up with the Coaltown Museum in the I-Site at Westport. It’s very well done.‬

‪Knew next to nothing about Denniston until I drove up the steep road and found the excellent interpretation panels to one side of what remains of the spread out old township of Denniston.

Up in the clouds. Lots of rain and mist. Cold winters. 100 years ago a hard life coal mining. Poor access then. Ugh.

Remains of the counterbalance rail system where coal was lowered in wagons to be transfered to part of the NZ rail system are there to be seen, as are houses typical of some designs of the past.

If you are driving down some of the remote gravel access roads, be a bit wary of coal trucks. In good weather, If you have a 4 wheel drive SUV you can get to a high point near the tower where you can see; down onto the coastal plain, back across to rugged mountains, and some sub-alpine plants. Best done in tandem with a tow rope available.

A moderate drive from Westport where you can buy a book about Denniston.‬

‪Denniston is 18 km northeast of Westport. From Westport follow SH67 north for 15 km. Turn right at Waimangaroa onto the road to Denniston. An excellent access road, sealed and quite steep in parts. No admission charge!
Visit the museum in Westport ($10 each) first to get some detailed background on this historic area. Then drive way up into the hills on a fine day just to see how big, rugged and remote this area is. The history is very well presented here and to see the incline where the coal was literally dropped off a cliff is amazing. Lovely walks in the area and also a Mt Bike trail. Living up there with the land denuded of cover and nothing but mud in winter must have been absolutely horrible especially for the women.‬

‪Also know as the Denniston Heritage Trust, this site gives the visitor an appreciation for the hard life endured by coal miners living at this high location; what remains of the original equipment is what was left in place following the site’s abandonment, however this too lends a gritty atmosphere to the place.
There are numerous descriptive panels and photos showing the layout and daily operations of the Denniston mine, as well as good walking trails throughout which provide access to some of the more remote areas, and an excellent view of the surrounding area. Well worth the winding drive to the top to reach the site. Free of charge. Good shoes for walking recommended as paths and trails are gravel surfaced.‬
