This well made track was a delightful experience of natural and historical highlights. The track is easy, yet scenic and the information boards are great. Accessible, short and good for a picnic.

Absolutely stunning walk through Denniston history. We walked in along the very East path. There are signs and information points to read about the location and history. At the turnaround point is the fan house, which is still standing and at the entry point of part of the mine. Simply amazing and unexpected part of the day.

A Westport must do. Was an unknown walk to me and I grew up on the coast! Will be telling more people about this walk for sure!

A must do I would say.
The drive up is amazing and the views from the mountain spectacular!
The Coalmine impresses in the way that you can see the ruins and hard labour the miners went through as it's very well explaned on the numerous panels with descriptions and pictures. And again the views over the whole region and the sea are breathtaking.

After visiting the Incline and wandering round the former mine workings and village, we headed further along the road to Coalbrookdale. Whereas the Denniston carpark was full, there was not another soul at Coalbrookdale. I had low expectations but it turned out to be a great walk, of about an hour or longer if you want to linger. A steady gentle climb up the tram line then through a low tunnel before a sharp turn along the stream and a meander along to the slightly spooky fan house, passing old mining tunnels along the way. We avoided the tunnel on the way back, taking the mtb track and then heading back on the other side of the stream. Fascinating seeing the steps to what would have been families huts. All round an interesting, peaceful and family friendly walk.

While visiting the Denniston Plateau it is worth the extra effort to walk this track. Drive up to the start of the track where there is limited parking. From there you follow the old railway up to an old building containing a fan that provided air into a local mine. You can walk a little bit further up over a more less defined track to a remnant dam. On the way back a well marked alternative track takes you down the other side of the creek back to the car park. On the way up there is a railway tunnel plus various old mine shafts. An easy walk and allow about an hour or more if you want to explore.

Looking at a bunch of old rusting relics is one thing, but to get a feel for the whole area you should read Denniston Rose first.
What you see today is nothing like what it was and it's hard to imagine the harshness of living and working in a place like the Denniston Plateau from the comfort of our modern day lives.
For a real 'feel' go when the clouds are down and imagine what it must have been like for people who weren't tourists - but actually lived it!
Harsh doesn't begin to describe the conditions and you will come away with a better appreciation for those which built the fledgling New Zealand

I had to visit, having read Denniston Rose. We spent a good couple of hours here, but we poked around all over the place and read most of the interesting sign boards. The walk doesn't take that long. It's great to see some of the relics and have images to give you an idea what it was like back then. It was clearly a tough place to live.
Pity the tours have closed down, we would have been interested in that.
As well we rode some of the Denniston MTB trails another day. We like it a bit raw and interesting and Denniston did not disappoint. We even managed to find our way around for most of it, following the reasonably good signage. The MTB trail map and DOC trail maps are slightly different though which made it a little confusing. Just got a bit lost in one area but some locals set us straight. Some really cool technical dh and uphill sections. Reminded us of some of the Utah trails.
Oh and as the clouds were high, we had views in all directions.

Nice to see and a lot of historical information about the people that once lived and worked in the town and coal mines.

The Denniston Plateau sits 2000' above the coastal plain. 130y ago a rich seam of coal was discovered. But how to get it down to the coastal plain....so was built one of the worlds industrial wonders, an extremely steep railway line designed to move coal in 14 tonne wagons!!!
When I first visited this site 25y ago it was significantly underdeveloped as a tourism site. What's been done is an absolute credit to Westland tourism. Top marks! For a comparison ease visit nearby underdeveloped Millerton too.
