We visited here on a spur of the moment on Father's Day. Despite it being really busy we managed to get parked no problem. Really enjoyed the walk around. Only bad point was the sheer amount of Dog Poo lying around. Most owners of dogs that we seen on the day were cleaning up after them however it is clear not everybody does! Its a bit of a shame really.
We will be back up at some point to explore more of it though

Always busy, but it's so big it never feels crowded.
Very popular with (responsible) dog walkers. Lots of open space, lots of woodland trails, the River Blyth for paddling in, a dipping pool complete with water boatmen, the odd newt and tadpole, water snails etc, a cheap and cheerful cafe, staffed by county council volunteers, and an excellent well used children's play area. There's also a well equipt woodland classroom which is obviously well used.
Busy pay as you go car park, but the first hour is free and it's only £4 for the whole day. (Opening hours vary, dawn to dusk) and the car park has a resident independent soft ice cream van with reasonally priced 'frozen goods'.

This is a lovely place to go with kids and dogs, teenagers , everyone really. we had a lovely walk and our son loved the river rocks, the dog loved the woods . It was a terrible shame and we were very shocked by the lack of social distance , there were people everywhere, the park was absolutely packed , alot of people like us were sticking to the rules but loads of people were terrible and stuck together at the visitor center and park it was really shocking(obviously not the fault of plessey woods) On a normal day in a normal time I'm sure this would be lovely for picnic, dog walk, family walks, river splashing etc

A really lovely place to walk. Visited with 3 other adults and a 6 year old and we all found the walk easy and just the right amount of time. We also took our dog who seemed to really enjoy it too. Lots of sculptures to see and plenty of streams and rivers to paddle in. The play area is now also open. If visiting during the pandemic, I’d recommend visiting early in the morning or later in the day. We arrived just before 10am and it was relatively quiet but by 12pm when we were heading back to the car park it was getting very busy. It is however still quite easy to distance from others once in the woods.

Brought out 2year old Kokoni here for a good walk and see how he is out and about , 20 min from Newcastle this amazing area can be found , due to lockdown the car park was full but I was lucky to get in after about 5 min wait , the fee has been waived but usually there is a charge , the area is beutiful with plenty paths to walk down , we opted for a path along the outskirts to avoid as many people as possible , we loved just rambling along the river and woods , we were out for about 2 hours but next time we would take a picnic and stay longer , deffo worth a visit

Beautiful country park on reclaimed land, very scenic. Visitor centre is only open weekends in winter but toilets available all year round. Modest parking charge for access to lovely varied woodland.

There’s a great horse chestnut tree in the field opposite the kids play park.
The walks down towards the river are great with kids too, our toddler loved playing pooh sticks and splashing in muddy puddles along the route.
The play park has recently had a face lift and is superb.

Hi everyone,
Today we visited Plessey Woods which is about a 30 minute drive from South Shields. Plessey Woods is fabulous for kids, teens, dogs, grown up basically everybody and best of all its completely free bar a small parking charge if you stay more than an hour.
The play area has been recently constructed and we were very eager to see what it had to offer. We were all delighted with it, the kids loved all the equipment and what was particularly good about it is the fact it has something for everyone from a high speedy bouncy roundabout type contraption to a parent and child swing. Kids of all ages looked very happy enjoying all it had to offer.
Next to the play area is a nice little cafe where you can buy your usual goodies but best of all for us having a coeliac daughter was they sell a pre packed gluten free ice cream cone (it was also dairy free) my daughter said it was lovely. The woods are also filled with picnic tables and places to sit if you prefer to bring a picnic along on your adventures.
The woods themselves are stunning with various paths leading you in different directions. There is a beautiful river complete with ducks and ideal for splodging in, so many trees waiting to be climbed, fairy doors, sculptures, games and even an ogre hideout!
Plessy Woods definitely gets a big thums up from #notboredoutdoors and we can't wait to go back in the autumn to see how it looks as the leaves begin to fall.

Yes I believe you can. Last time I visited there were some designated bbq areas so you should be fine.
