Askernish Golf Club. Those words have been rolling off my tongue a lot since I finally played there last weekend. And it was worth every minute of the long winded journey to get there. Ours was the only car in the park when we arrived. The welcome in the small clubhouse was exceptional. We were advised to take trollies. This was very good advice as it is quite hilly from green to the next tee in places. The opening four holes are pretty ho hum, nothing special there. Scoring was good. But then the course starts to bare its teeth. From the sixth onwards it is a game of survival. This is not a course for the faint of heart. I walked on to the 7th tee and found myself just staring at the hole taking it all in. A long par 4, S.I. 1. A sliver of fairway to aim at, some 150yards across wildflowers and brutal rough. That's half the job done. I eventually carded a 6 on what is without doubt the finest golf hole I have played anywhere in the world. Long carries to skinny fairways continued and I count myself fortunate to have lost only a brace of balls. The 11th is an impossible looking long par 3 into the prevailing wind. We laughed hard on our first sighting from the tee. But there is a bale out area short right which made the hole manageable. The greens here are a mid pace, around 7 or so on the stimp I'd guess. They look rough at first glance but they generally run smooth and true. And there are some wicked slopes on some. The tee boxes look like cow pasture! This truly is a golf course with a genuinely olde worlde feel. It rained for the final five holes which did nothing to dampen our spirits. A couple of drinks in the clubhouse and we were on our way from an outstanding course.

We played the course in a force six wind and were hit by a couple of short showers. The course was in good condition as I had expected and the greens, whilst not snooker table baize, were true and a consistent speed. I play off 12 and consider my gross 96 to be about par given the conditions and my first time on the course. The club attendant was very helpful and hospitable. We pre arranged electric trolleys, which I would recommend if you don’t carry. There are a few steep climbs. Have laid out the preamble I must say this was a fantastic golfing experience and something that any true golfer should put on their bucket list. I will be making every effort to play this course again. Whatever you read about Askernish Golf Course double it and add 10.

One of the planned highlights of a trip to the Outer Hebrides let down by poor management by those in charge of the course.
Tried to get in contact with the course via both phone and email in advance of my trip but email was ignored and never got a returned call.
Booked online for a round with club hire, as the option was provided on the website and I received confirmation of my booking from the club.
Arrived to my tee-time to find the clubhouse closed on a Saturday morning, no note of a winter restriction on the opening hours. There was a phone number which went straight to voicemail which directs you to another number going straight to voicemail for an office (open 9-5 Monday to Friday).
I can appreciate that out of season does not have the same level of cover but basic functionality on the website or even an update to the website would have covered this off. At the very least a note at the club itself.
Eventually got in contract after I left the island through messaging the club via Facebook, which I wouldn't typically do for golf bookings.
Hopefully the club resolves this with the season starting in earnest on 1st of April but for next winter this should really be addressed.
For what it's worth, the club have been swift to organise a refund and the course looked in great condition from what I could see.

Golf play at Askernish in its unique way was challenging, frustrating, but in the end a very enjoyable experience despite mixed weather conditions. It has a marvellous location by the sea but was marred by deceiving unrelenting rough, cavernous rabbit holes on the fairways and cow pats. My husband who has a handicap of five lost as many golf balls two of which must have disappeared down rabbit holes on two of the fairways. A stroke saver is essential to be able to navigate the course for the first time. We hope to return next year.

Absolute gem
Golf in an old fashioned but beautiful setting
Tremendous spectacular difficult rewarding authentic
Probably the most enjoyable round of golf I have ever had
Off my 11.6 handicap I shot a gross 111 and lost 7 balls but I don't think I have ever enjoyed a round more
Don't come here if you want smooth americanised golf greens
If you want to experience golf as it was meant to be this place is a must
Fantastic

Played Askernish mid September with my brother and brother-in-law. We were on a holiday and family research trip covering the Outer Hebrides.
Our paternal grandfather was shipped off to Canada by Lady Cathcart. With all the extra room created she hired Old Tom Morris to design Askernish.
The day before we played the wind was blowing hard and the rain was coming in sideways. The golf course emailed us and told us no one would be in the clubhouse but they would leave our rental clubs in the maintenance shed. We drove down from North Uust the next morning and were surprised to find the club captain at the clubhouse. Three nice sets of Callaway rental clubs were all set up and ready to go. The captain gave us a few tips and pointed us in the right direction. The sky cleared but the wind was still blowing. Downwind we could take a shot at driving the green on a par 4. Against the wind it was a 6 iron to hit a green 100 yards away.
I commented on the 6th hole that the course was an easy walk. Three holes later we were hiking up and down huge sand dunes and working up a sweat.
The holes along the ocean are spectacular. Great views south to Barra. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. If you hit the fairways you will score well. Miss the fairway by a few feet and your ball will disappear in the thick grass. My brother hit a great drive on 12 that must have ended up in a rabbit hole because we couldn't find the ball.
Would have played the course again but we ran out of time.

We recently travelled to Askernish to play in the Open weekend. It was a wonderful experience despite the inclement weather. We couldn't have been made to feel more welcome and the course was exactly what we expected Than you to all at teh Club who made us so welcome

I was looking forward to playing this course so much. What a disappointment ! The course was in dreadful condition. The fairways were bare, bumpy and hardly distinguishable from the rough. They were also littered with deep rabbit holes. The greens were some of the worst I have ever played on with many bare patches and some even had daisies growing all over them. There were no tee boxes or 'next tee' indicators so it was difficult to know for sure which hole we were playing. We got lost a couple of times (as did a guy we spoke to in the car park). The location is beautiful but the course when we played it looked utterly neglected.

I`ve played this course a couple of times now - once in the summer of 2017 and again this year - while holidaying on the Uists. It`s an absolutely superb course in a stunning location - white sandy beaches and views across the islands.
It was breezy both visits as you`d expect in the Hebrides. It is a very good test for any standard of golfer.
On both occasions I almost had the course to myself.
The clubhouse is smallish but modern, and the chap in the clubhouse was very friendly and welcoming.
My wife doesn`t play but she was happy to walk around, taking photos, listening to but not seeing the corncrakes, and admiring the wild flowers in the machair.
It was breezy both visits as you`d expect in the Hebrides. It is a very good test for any standard of golfer.
On both occasions I almost had the course to myself.

Seeing conflicting reviews. Would this be worth a visit in July? Needs to be good as would be leaving the wife on her own for that time during our visit. Would be alone and likely only do either the front or back and be renting clubs.

I did the course today, it's a good layout thoroughly enjoyed it. The tees are marked and it's well laid out. One hole I wasnt sure which way to go but I followed the map. The greens were testing because of the contours on them but I found the pace and speed fine. I finished with two birdies.
I had my own clubs but still paid £45 for the 18 holes. With a bit more TLC it would be an even better course but I suppose they don't get the footfall. Andrew, Cumbernauld.
