we spotted this castle in the distance when we visited Smailholm Tower
and decided to visit. It is free, and there is a small car park
but be warned - do take a spare pair of boots
There is sheep poo literally everywhere
However if you don't mind that, it is worth the short walk up, and the views are great

Super ruined castle on the top of a hill with magnificent views all round. Easy parking for cars or, in our case, bikes and easy ascent to the castle which is very well kept.

This is a epic castle. It doesn’t look like a castle but still go because I had the time of my life. The view is fab too and watch your step because there are tons of sheep poo.

This sturdy stronghold stands proud on its hilltop setting with extensive views of local countryside. You just need to use your imagination about how the castle might have looked in its heyday and the sort of action that must have taken place centuries ago! Close your eyes and listen out for the clamour of battles past , the yells of incoming reivers and troopers trying to gain a foothold in this border fortress! A favourite place of Sir Walter Scott.

Hume castle is obviously very overlooked as a monument to the little known but very obvious manner in which the Scots looked out for the English in time gone by. Because of it's remote location i am sure that this wonderful monument is often overlooked for it's part in advanced warning and therefore is little visited which is such a shame as the views around the surrounding countryside are unmatched. T ake time to come here read the legend and then take a tour up to the highest levels, you will not be disappointed

We were driving through the area and spotted Hume Castle so decided to go for a visit. There was a small car park at the entrance to the field and information signs just through the gate. While the castle is a ruin the views are spectacular so we would definitely recommend stopping if passing by. It is quite a steep path up to the castle but only a very short walk.

This not your usual "Historic Castle" site. There is not much left but the history makes it worth a visit. Good parking but a bit of a walk, not the best for less able people. It was the home of Sir Alec Douglas Home's family previously. and there is a bit of an archaeological dig taking place at the moment

It is what it is no cost and a perspective of why its there through history. A very important appreciation of the borders and Scottish culture .It is easy to spend monies without getting anything this is not the case it is worth a visit and looking into the history.

The views are great and there’s hardly any walking from the car park to get up to the castle. It’s also free. The castle is simply walls and a viewing point. If in the area it’s worth a visit.

Hume Castle had a prominent place in the history of the eastern Borders, and the views from its (fake) ramparts tells so much about the area. You can see all the way south to the Cheviot, east towards Berwick and east towards Jedburgh - and you can see the castle from all over as well.
Very windswept, there's a small car park you reach via winding country lanes - the castle is your marker.. What you see is an 18th century folly rather than the original mediaeval walls, so it feels a little strange - it is also very different from the more traditional tower castles of the Borders. Worth digging into its history.

where is the best place to stay overnight near this castle? I was thinking of Kelso since it is close and also historically related to the castle.
كُتب بتاريخ 19 فبراير 2017
Sorry for the delay. Delighted to hear about your roots. Yes, Kelso would be a fine place to stay, although I have not stayed anywhere there so cannot make any personal recommendations either. I have stayed at Mansefield, a B&B at the eastern end of Greenlaw which is just north of the castle and even closer than Kelso. Greenlaw also has strong Hume/Home links. Have you visited our clan website? Do message me for further clan information.
