Brilliant Victoran park just over the road from the beach. Miniature railway gives free rides behind (sometimes) real steam engines!

planned a visit to roker park to see the lights and as I'm disabled contacted Sunderland council for advice on disabled parking for the event,
i was told the nearest parking with a blue badge was marine walk.(2640ft to the nearest park entrance)
i asked if i could park at ravine terrace (400ft to nearest park entrance)
this road has a large section of double yellow line that i could park using my blue badge, but the road was closed for residents parking (on double yellows ?)
so had no choice if i wanted to visit other than marine walk, this took me nearly an hour to scale the cliff path in the dark
there is plenty of parking available if using your blue badge around the park but the councils blanket ban stops this
shame on you Sunderland council for making it virtually impossible for disabled people to visit
my photos show the 2 paths up from the car park and the other shows ravine terrace with ample space

This is a great park to have a walk around. Lovely well kept areas of greenery to sit and have a picnic, a Victorian bandstand, boating lake, and mini train ride. It is great to see everyone out and about again enjoying the sunshine.

Roker Park is an area of greenery and recreation space located in the Roker Part of Sunderland around two miles from the City Centre of Sunderland. We often walk from the City Centre on foot to take in some of the different random pieces of artwork that line the route alongside the main road and it usually takes around 45 minutes to get to the beach which then leads onto the park. If you make your way to Roker Beach and walk towards to the nautical research pods (big round balls on wheels) located near the old lifeboat launching area (now graffitied over), you will approach the park from the left through a small entrance.
As you enter the park, you enter through a slightly shaded area before emerging into a large area of greenery with a Victorian bandstand on it. From this navigation point, you can choose to go to view the boating lake, look at the mini steam engines (that children can ride when operational), a large play area. There are toilets located within the park that are open dawn to dusk and there is usually either an ice cream van or a coffee van selling a selection of hot or cold drinks.
We love going after a long walk to the beach and walking around the pier by the lighthouse because it allows us to spend some meaningful time together without spending more than the cost of a cup of coffee.
It is great to see families out and about enjoying the sunshine and the heat as well as other couples such as my partner and I taking in the sights and sounds of the park.
Roke Park is an excellent example of some of the hidden gems of Sunderland and it is definitely worth going along for an hour (or two) with the kids (and potentially a picnic) if the weather allows for a safe, free and fun day.

A great park just across from the sea. Lovely walks and a very pretty bandstand. I’m sure the gardens will be even more colourful in the summer.

Nice park, well maintained. Walked into park from beach. Good play areas if you have kids with you. Quite hilly so be prepared. Bandstand looked good.

Must visit the model railway for a ride when the old blokes are there. Saturdays and Sundays during the high season, and when special events are on...

Queen's parade is on the sea front and has about 10 places where you can eat (although some of these may only open on an evening)
With children in mind, I recommend Martino's
