Surprisingly large and varied collection of buildings from the local area, saved and rebuilt here between the 1960’s and the present day. Even a telephone box collection, which was actually quite interesting.

Avoncroft is a wonderful museum. Compact but full of interest, and easily accessible from the Birmingham area and beyond.
Facilities are well-maintained and in addition to the interesting array of working-class buildings and history on offer, there's the national telephone kiosk collection here too. The phones are all wired up so you can go in separate phone boxes and call each other up (old 10p coins are provided). It was kind of funny watching younger mobile-phone generation people seeing/trying this technology for the first time.
If the vintage buses are running then grab a ride.. This was a highlight.
Avoncroft hosts occasional "theme" days with re-enactors too.
Unfortunately, it's not just the buildings etc. that are old-fashioned. There are some old fashioned attitudes too. We visited during a WW2 event day and after I'd walked past a small group of enactors, one of them made an unpleasant comment about me. What he didn't realise was that my partner was a fair way behind me after stopping to take a photo of something, and heard every word.
Hopefully, the regular staff are more enlightened but if the museum is to thrive it's events need to embrace everyone; not just white men with a short back and sides.

What a brilliant find! We were looking for an outside, dog friendly visitor attraction whilst staying in the area and loved this fascinating collection of buildings and all the history which they embody. We learnt so much about local industries and crafts whilst wandering around lovely parkland. There was something new around every corner to delight adults and children alike.
A wonderful way to spend anything from a few hours to a full day.

We happened upon this place and thoroughly enjoyed it. They do a great job in preserving historical buildings and teaching the skills to restore them. The volunteers help to bring it alive.

A terrifically enjoyable day out can be had here! The collection is of buildings which have been brought here to be saved and re-erected, and there are many fascinating survivors therefore. Walk around the museum and read the information so helpfully provided about the very varied buildings. The best part of a day can be enjoyed here, and either bring a picnic or use their rather sweet cafe, which resides in what used to be The String of Horses pub from Shrewsbury. There is the National collection of phone boxes and telephone exchanges to be admired along with the historical buildings!

An amazing collection of old buildings brought together in a stunning outdoor setting, the Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings is a great place to visit for a few hours, taking you back through various eras in history to see how people lived. We came during the Jubilee weekend and saw lots of amazing recreations of Civil War battles thanks to the local Sealed Knot society, who also put on various side-stalls and demonstrations throughout the day. I would definitely say it's worth checking the Museum's website to see what events are taking place before visiting as the place is definitely all the better when things are going on.
The buildings have been lovingly restored over the last few decades by a talented team of volunteers and patrons, often rescuing them from destruction or development. We particularly loved the old 1940s prefab (my grandmother and mother lived in one, was amazing to see how well kitted out it was and how much 'space' they had around these temporary buildings, far more than we have today!)
Staff and volunteers were really friendly, and there's a fantastic cafe for drinks and cakes, lollies and sweets so that's well worth a visit. Also don't miss the old telephone kiosk collection (they even have a Tardis) and the windmill further into the museum's grounds.

My friend from work has done this, and won’t stop going on about it. To the point where I’m going to sign myself up. From what he says he had a smashing time, and learnt a lot.

Hi, is the museum open on November 24 th this year?

Sorry for the delay, hadn't seen this - yes the Museum is open tomorrow. We're now on winter opening hours so we open at 10.30am and close at 4pm - it's advisable to use the Edwardian Tea Room a bit before that as they may close a few minutes beforehand.
