‪When we planned a family outing themed around Srirampur an old town on the West Bank of River Hooghly ( batter known as Ganga) we had planned our itinerary starting from the nearly 200 year old Jagannath temple at Mahesh.

Its historical importance is perhaps as significant as Puri where the Lord comes to take his meals before resting at Rameswaram. The quiet ambience, the absence of priests exhorting you to part ways with your money make this a place of soulful meditation. The chariot sitting on the road a little away from the temple rolls out on rath yatra day and it is one of the biggest spectacles outside of Puri perhaps. Do check out this place .. a short 1 hour drive from Kolkata.‬

‪Mahesh Rath Jatra Festival is the oldest community festival in Bengal and the second largest in the whole of India. Lakhs of people from different part of the state and some people from outside congregate every year for the onward and return journey of the Lord Jagannath accompanied by brother Balaram and sister Subhadra. The festival lasts for 8 days .Mahesh is located within Serampore a subsivisional town in the district of Hoogly easily reachable from Howrah stn within half an hour. During the festival time the visitors are to walk as vehicles do not ply at that time. Those who are aged and cannot walk should not visit during festival time.
How and when this festival started is indeed an interesting story which the visitors should know. Sometime during 14th century one Drubananda Puri happened to visit Puri and desired to offer Bhog to the Deity Lord Jagannath. The then priests did not permit him, so he started fasting until death. It is so said that on the third night he dreamt that Lord Himself was telling him to go to Mahesh where he would get Him in the form of a neem trunk from which the image was to be made. He did as advised and after that offered Bhog to the Deity. It is very likely some make shift arrangement was made to place the idol and offer the puja. Actually Kamalaksha Piplai one of disciples started the rath and the festival in 1396. Jagannath temple came later--Late Nayan Chand Mullcik of Pathuriaghat , Calcutta had the temple built in 1755.. The chariot was a donation from a person of Baidyabati in 1797. This chariot and the later chariots built in succession due to destruction of the previous one by fire or otherwise in 1852, 1857, 1885 gave a strong reminder that wooden structures should not be used any more. And finally iron structured chariot came in 1885 since which it has been running perfectly well without any mishap. It is 50 feet high and it weighs 125 tons. While visiting the rath jatra festival one with family should be careful lest the younger ones may not get astray or meet any accident due to overcrowding.
