‪I love visiting old cemeteries and the drive to Chinsurah was to visit the old Dutch cemetery. Google map was great for navigation...we took a little over two hours to reach. The cemetery was huge let down because the graves/tombs had all been covered with the same sort of primer or paint or whatever. The patina of time, the discolouration, the mosses, the lichens...all gone. Plaques, most of them anyway, were gone. To be replaced afterwards or lost; I do not know. The few plaques that remain are almost unreadable. The plus side? It looks neat and clean and well-cared for. I felt quite "cheated" because the timelessness of old places was missing and that is the serenity I seek. It could have been EXCELLENT but the way I saw it...ongoing renovation...mindless...I rate it AVERAGE.‬

‪It’s a definite place to visit when in Chinaurah. It’s interesting to know that while the English were in Calcutta, the French colonised the nearby port of Chandannagar and the Ditch came to chi aura also known as chuchura. This tiny town has a couple of places of interest including a Dutch cemetery which houses about 30th graves.
Although it’s closed to visitors for covid, there is some renovation work going on so we managed a couple of quick pics and an even quicker look around‬

‪The place offers divine serenity to the visitors. But from outside it looks like a dumpyard. The entrance is full of garbage. The ASI board also has withered off. Needs more maintenance. The interiors and graves are clean and well gardened though. From Chinsurah station just hire an auto or self drive via GT road from Bally. Very easy to reach. No food and lodging options around. Hooghly Imambara is also nearby. Can be visited together. Best time is evening. Closes by 5pm.

For movie buffs, there is a trivia here. The real character which inspired Suzy of Saat Khoon Maaf, is buried here.‬

‪The Dutch cemetery is not for those with a faint heart but for history and photography buffs it is paradise. You can walk through the history of Bengal and share space with many a luminary. The graves are in pretty bad shape but that is what makes them attractive. Reading through the names and the inscriptions on the tomb stones gives one the goosebumps.‬

‪This is the first monument we visited after reaching Chinsurah. What appeals is the quietness of the place which houses, amidst trees and greens, mortal remains of important Dutch officials and persons, including Governor. Lots of aesthetics were taken care of in designing the Graves which are in the shape of obelisks, coffin tombs or plain graves. Apart from the Dutch, one can see a lot of English persons, including children buried here. What is important is that this place has lasted more than 300 years in its present form and this makes it very important monument. The place is enclosed in a high brick wall and trees add to‬

‪To the best of my knowledge this is under the ASI and its maintenance is being regularly done, this can be seen by the clear walkways around the cemetery. The tombs are PROBABLY more than centuries old still their grandeur can be well seen and felt .if one studies the name on the graves and tombs i beileve you will conclude that some english families are buried here as well‬

‪Although I am a native of Chinsurah , presently living at the adjoining town of Chandannagore, did not visit the cemetery during the last ten years. However I still remember that when we were children , we used to move away from the old cemetery as it was located in the west of the town being very very lonely. Netherland East India company was established in 1602 and gradually they came to India for trading purposes. Portuguese traders came to India about 100 years ago and settled in many places in India including Bengal. The Dutch followed them and came to Saptagram and found that drying of the river Saraswati forced the Portuguese to leave Saptagram and shift their trade to Hooghly. The Dutch then could not compete with the Portuguese and so they moved away a little south to find a new place which has been known as Chinsurah. In course of time they built settlements , fort, factories and the underground drainage system in the town (perhaps the first in India ). However they could not flourish in trade so long the Portuguese enjoyed military and trading supremacy. However the Portuguese incurred the wrath of the Moghul emperor Shejahan who ordered his army to fight the Portuguese and drive them out.In 1632 war the Portuguese were almost crushed and their trade was lost to a great extent. Then came the opportunity of the Dutch to get trade license from the Moghuls. The Dutch prospered and became very rich in no time. However there followed many wars when the English came and the Dutch had their military power mauled by the British in the war of Bedar. in 1814. The Dutch soon lost the interest in their colonial possessions in India , when the British offered Indochina Island as exchange of the Dutch areas. Chinsurah was finally handed over to the British in 1825. Near about 200 years the Dutch ruled in Chinsurah and it was natural that needed a cemetery to bury the dead Dutch men and women. According to general practice the cemetery is selected outside the town and so it was in the outskirt of Chinsurah in the seventeenth century. This is a shadowy tranquil place where are lying old tombs holding the old history of the place and also reminding the visitors that they had come from far away and now lying here in peace not to be disturbed .‬
