‪Idimuzhangaan Para camp (Idimuzhangan Nights package) at Shendurni Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is just 1.5 hours drive from Thiruvananthapuram city and its a great location for adventure lovers, Friends or Family to experience some serious nature and to take a break from the stress of the City life. We have to book this place through the website Shendurney WIldlife Sanctuary and it costs around 6500 for two people and 1500 for every additional person. The Camp is about 1 hour boat ride from the Thenmala Dam Catchment area and that ride is excellent and if you are lucky you can have lot of wildlife sightings enroute. A team consisting of A Cook, helper Forest watcher will assist you to the camp and stay. Its a good walk of 1 km from the boatland to the Camp shed through the picturesque forest and you can see lot of wildlife activities on the way. The Camp shed is secured with deep trench and electric fencing to keep the Big Guys away and the camp is solar powered. We reached there kept our bags and our guide took us for a bath to the waterfall nearby and thats a real experience. The highlight is if you are a family or a group only you will be there and no one else as only one group is permitted at a time.
There are Two rooms one with EU type Wash and the other one Indian type. Maintenance is only 60% but we can give it that discount when you consider its a pure Jungle camp.
The Camp is facing a big marshy ground covered with thick grass and we got lucky seeing lots of elephants and Sambar deer.
We had a barbeque night which was great but couldn't enjoy that much due to heavy rain. The food was ok. They have a routine vegetarian menu and if you need non-veg and any other sides you have to carry them with you and they will prepare it for you.
Morning breakfast is good we had Puttu and Kadala then we went for a trek which was through a very thick vegetation and we were back by 11.30 to the waterfall and then took a nice bath in the stream for 2 hours. After lunch we packed off to the boatland and then back our ways.‬

‪We were here when we went to thenmala. YOu can smell the moist air mixed with the sand if you are here on a rainy day. The aroma itself relaxes you from all the tensions in you. You can see a varieties of trees here and if you are lucky enough you can spot a number of wild animals.‬

‪Shendureny Wildlife Sanctuary, falling within the Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve, is in Kollam Revenue District in the State of Kerala. The santuary is located in the Ariyancavu mountain pass, forests to the south of which is known as one of the most floral diverse areas of the world. The sancuary adorns the southern Western Ghats, which is one of the oldest mountain ranges of the world and now a declaired World Heritage Site. The santuary is at an equi-distance of about 70 KM both from Kollam and Trivandrum and is conveniently accessible at any time of the year.
The Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary gains its name owing to the presence of endemic and endangered hardwood trees locally known as Chenkurinji, which were once regarded as royal trees by the erstwhile State of Travancore. The river transversing the reserve is also known as Shendurney River on the banks of which the bulk of the sanctuary is spread out. With its tropical monsoon climate, the forest ranges from tropical evergreen rain forest to myristica swamp forest, from tropical savanna to grassland ecosystem. You may find to your delight many parent ornamental plants to wild pepper vines all happily living together in the comfort of the dense forest. And the fauna, myraid from tiny insects to gaint asiatic elephants, blood sucking leeches to venomous king cobras, highly elusive camouflaged nocturnal bird great eared nightjar to many species of colourfull birds, frogs of defferent hues to cold water fishes, the biodiversity of a tropical forest is well represented at this part of the world. The area though pristine give evidence to prehistoric human habitation, may be lured by the refreshing perennial rivulets and gorgeous waterfalls breathtakingly set within the forest.
With the permission of the flora and fauna of the sanctuary, the custodian of the forest, the wildlife warden at the Thenmala Dam Site at about a short distance of about 7 KM away, may allow you to experience the wilderness of the tropical forest, where the denizens celebrate the monsoons with great enthusiasm. For the less adventurous a boat ride in the Thenmala Reservior may well be arranged by the
Thenmala Ecotourism Center, also located at the Dam Site where river Shendurney joins with Kazuthurity River and Kulathupuzha River to form Kallada River.
You are a risk taking nature lover or not you must be well aware of the fact that one of the golden rules of the forest is to aviod an enemy stronger than you and the game to play is hide and seek.‬
