Historic beautiful state preserve. Great for snorkeling and swimming in the reef-protected lagoons. All pets must be leashed at all times. State law.

While searchimg for the Petroglyph Trail wecame upon this beach which shares the same parking area. I love this beach for the natural setting of coral rocks,lava slopes, turtles, secluded. Maybe not atypical sandy beach but I could have stayed all day.

This listing looks like it documents any beach access in Puako. I’ll join in
I’m not sure if you go to Puako to swim, but if you want to snorkel or sit on the beach there are lots of options.
We heard snorkeling was great so we stopped at first beach access after the boat ramp. From the beach we walked right to snorkel in the bay. Fins or swim shoes recommended. We took chairs and set up under a tree for hours watching the waves.
There are several other shore access points in Puako and I’m guessing the middle ones are good for snorkeling, too. We also went to the last shore access, Paniau Beach. Waves were rough and entry is rocky but perhaps snorkeling would work. There is a trail to walk south/ left on the beach to Holoholokai Beach (10-15 min walk). At Holiholokai there are tide pools to explore. Picnic tables. Shade.

We drove through while exploring and found a few public access shore areas that were relatively empty and therefore very quiet and peaceful. This will definitely be a future picnic spot for us. There are some shady areas to sit. Bring your own chairs, though.

Quite a few public access points to snorkel. Most were tough to enter the water. Liked the one across from the church the best. Swam with turtles and lots of fish one day. 2nd day the water was rough and several of us were cut by coral/lava and 2 of us were stung by black sea urchins. Did not go back the remainder of our 10 day vacation. These are also not swimming beaches.

Loved this bay. Quiet and peaceful with ample seating and lounge chairs. Water was clear and fish were abundant

Puako Beach road snakes from the highway along a strip of houses with beach access pull outside every so often. The beach has lava rock pools with oodles of sea life (many green turtles).

The title best describes this area. Very view visitors will be found walking along the shore on the black lava rock. We enjoyed most days walking along the shore looking for turtles that are resting in the tidal pools and listening for the surf to come on shore. Not a lot of sandy beach to be found in the Puako area itself. The most sandy beach area we found was just north of the general store. There is quite a few public beach access points to found with limited parking at each. For us, the 2 most enduring qualities of this bay where whale watching and sunsets.

This place was attractive, with free parking and a nice, green shady area that beckons you toward the beach. But really, the beach itself didn't seem all that inviting to us. Maybe we should have followed the trail that led to the north end and who knows, we might have found some nice snorkeling. But the area directly near the entrance seemed just kinda pretty and kinda interesting. Hung around for a while just to study some old folks who were sitting on beach chairs in the tide pools and snap a few photos. Not memorable, but then again, maybe I needed to show a little more initiative.

We rented kayaks while we stayed in Puako to go out into open water snorkeling and see the whales. The first part of Puako Bay is shallow and rocky with many fish including ray. Then once you get out past the rocks and work your way into the sea, there are places to tie up your kayak and drop in to snorkel. We took a guide the first time, to find the spots and then went back often. We saw whales as well-fairly close by. Beautiful area.

Hi, Puako sounds like an awesome place, but I have yet to find a decent map where you want to park. I keep hearing about the end of the road, but that is not very specific. any details on the parking spot?

Puako is on the Big Island of Hawaii. From Honolulu it is about an hour plane ride from Kona on the Big Island north to Honolulu. The cost for the plane ride is about $100-150.

Are the tide pools a big enough attention to visit the bay for? Are they the kind of thing that you could explore for a couple of hours or are they smaller?
