A special BIRMINGHAM CITY TRANSPORT day was being held on Sunday, 2 October. Was keen to have a ride on the recently restored 1931 AEC Regent double-decker bus, a petrol-engined vehicle that has cost over £500,000 to restore. Was able to ride to the Maypole and back - great! The day's event appeared to be well organised and there was plenty to see, including a number of vintage battery vehicles, not buses but delivery vans and milk floats. Was impressed with the park and ride arrangement that the museum had set up, with a frequent free bus service running from the very large Phoenix Insurance car park complex to the museum.

classic bus trips on different eras of buses from 50's to 80's. Interesting to contrast and also to relive some memories of the older buses

I love visiting the Wythall museum, today was no exception. The Birmingham City Transport event was excellent, superbly organised throughout, lots to see and do including a large number of bus rides.
I was going to travel by train today, but with there having been a strike yesterday and a party conference going on in Birmingham I thought the railway would be extremely busy so I drove instead. The off site car parking was well signposted, stewards were there to assist and the bus shuttle to and from the museum was frequent.
Thanks for a wonderful day, everyone involved with this event deserves a lot of credit.

A great day out. Loads of vehicles, many you can actually go on. Free vintage bus rides. A mini railway to ride on (additional charge, but worth it). Play and picnic areas. Staffed by friendly and extremely knowledgeable volunteers. Be sure to stop at the shop if you are into model buses as there are some good bargains.

This is a hidden gem just off the M42. Large collection of vehicles, especially old buses. All are immaculate condition and its possible to back in time by actually riding in one. All staff are volunteers and its amazing what they have achieved.

Great collection of buses and other vehicles in various states of repair.
Highlights include the Midland Red ME1 and the beautifully restored AEC Regent double decker bus, no I’m not a bus anorak! Lots of friendly volunteers on site, with special thanks to Dave for taking the time to show us around, he was very knowledgeable.. 6 of us went in with doubts as to how interesting a ‘transport museum’ could be, all came away impressed… thank you to all at the museum and keep up the good work.

What a wonderful museum! Exceptional value and lovely knowledgable volunteers. We particularly enjoyed the open top bus ride with children who have never experienced this. There were some good blasts from the past and interactive experiences in the hall. The cafe was good value for money, plain sandwiches for fussy children and delicious cakes. Not a bad word to say other than we would have liked the option of a nice warm snack like a jacket potato or toastie. Hidden gem!

Brilliant day out for all ages. I went with my partner, his 83 year old mother and my daughter, son in law and toddler grandchildren. The staff are extremely friendly and welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. You are able to enter several of the exhibits yourself but any that are roped off are often accessible if you find a member of staff to escort you and they will tell you the history and details too. There are buses of all ages, memorabilia, milk floats, a trolley bus and even a fire engine with a bell (especially popular with my grandson). Included in the ticket price (£7 for adults £5 kids with under 5's free) is a 30 minute open top bus ride around the local area and there is also a small miniature railway from just £1.50 extra. For kids there is an outdoor play area and an indoor play cabin. The cafe is very reasonably priced and does a variety of hot drinks, crisps, chocolate, ice cream and some cake and sandwiches. There is also a van selling chips and burgers and a small shop with books and timetable memorabilia as well as some models to purchase . Plenty of seating inside and outside the cafe and picnic benches on the green by the entrance and carpark, where there is ample parking. Dogs are welcome on short leads everywhere but inside the cafe, unless of course they are assistance dogs. It is wheelchair accessible apart from the buses used for the ride as they are obviously old stock, but for those with some mobility they provide steps to help you get on board. We were there all day it was so interesting and will definitely be returning

Really good family day out. Lovely little train ride for young children. Very interesting museum and plenty of all buses with some that you are allowed to go and sit on. Lovely CAFE and food area very reasonable. Fantastic bus rides very often throughout the day.

Are visitors allowed to get on the buses and look around inside them in situ?

mostly no. But it could be possible on some by asking the staff first. I seem to remember it was allowed on a couple of vehicles. there are of course usually local rides available for.
What is disabled access like please?

Note that the museum is now closed for winter and re-opens in April 2017. There is full disabled access to the two main display halls, the cafe and shop. There are disabled parking bays and a disabled toilet. The Shire Hall, which is the main workshop area and garage has closely parked vehicles which can restrict access on some days.
