We met two brothers at the RWC Rugby Paris and one lived in Fromelles. He invited us to visit and we were amazed at how well the exhibits were displayed. Very moving to see. They love Aussies visiting here and for their commitment to the First World War effort. They can't comprehend the distance that our boys travelled. Most losing their young lives... it's Sacred Ground.

We were here ten years ago when the Commonwealth War Grave was in its infancy and the important work of identifying the soldiers was advancing. They had announced the Museum but it was not yet finished. We always planned to return and so glad we did as the museum is awesome and the staff are excellent. Geoffrey one of the historians talked to us for ages and was so engaging. The displays and interactive elements are excellent. If you are a WWI enthusiast or have a relative here, you will be moved. The staff are always after personal accounts about the soldiers buried here as well. Please visit here.

It was suggested that I visit this museum by a history teacher and I am glad I did. Negligible cost but it is a small museum. The audio system is terrible - it kept on saying that the sound needed to sync?? whatever that means, so I missed a lot of the descriptions and audio comment. The signage for the audio is too small and suddenly you realise you have missed some and it won't let you go back to hear it. However I left this place with a real understanding of what happened in the battle, the people involved and what has occurred in the recent past in regard to the bodies of the soldiers. Make sure you put this museum on your list when visiting this area.

Walking around the museum and then visiting the adjoining cemetery made for a very moving experience. I have no links with Australia but found this emotional nevertheless. So many young men who were so far from home.
Well worth a visit.

I went to Fromelles because my Great Uncle remains, who was killed in the Battle of Fromelles on July 19th 1916, were located in a mass grave and were re-interred in a single grave.
The new Commonwealth War Grave site truly honours the soldiers who were killed there. Many of whom were not found or identified.
The Museum attached to the grave and Memorial is brilliant. Besides having great information on the battle, it has an immersive experience. We sat in a large round space where life size photos of the trenches were displayed. Accompanying this were the sounds of the battle with strobe lights and smoke. It produced just a taste of what it was like for the men who fought there.
We were shown on a map of the site how the battle was conducted. It made me very proud of the Australians who fought there. They achieved their objective of breaking through the German lines. Unfortunately the British did not and retreated and this allowed for the Germans fighting them to reinforce those fighting the Australians who were then also forced to retreat. My Great Uncle was part of a Machine Gun Squad who was tasked to cover the retreat. What brave men they were.
It was poignant to see this site and the way those who fell are honoured. It is sad that so many were killed. To date, in a battle, it is the largest loss of life for Australians in a single day. Out of a battalion of 10,000 men, 5,533 were casualties. It made me angry because it was a pointless battle. It was ill conceived and executed by the generals. They used the Australians as "cannon fodder". Yet, the Australians achieved their objective and this made me very proud.
My Great uncle fought in two battles. Gallipoli and Fromelles. Both failures and both pointless. He was a brave man and I am glad that I was able to honour him 103 years to the day he died.

This museum opened in July 2014, and is located alongside the Commonwealth cemetery where those soldiers, the majority of them Australian, are buried.
The Battle of Fromelles was the first major action involving Australian troops on the Western Front and is remembered as one of the bloodiest days in Australian military history. The Australians suffered more than 5,500 casualties, including almost 2,000 killed. The 61st British Division lost over 1,500 men, with more than 500 dead. The museum building lies just a few hundred metres from Pheasant Wood, where the remains of 250 soldiers, buried according to German military custom, were found in 2008 on the outskirts of the village of Fromelles. Perhaps the most poignant feature of the Fromelles Museum is a line of 21 panels telling the stories of just some of the soldiers who fell, pieced together with the help of families who took part in the identification process, following the discovery of their remains.

Museum was small but very interesting. The guide spoke great English, and told interesting things about the process of finding and identifying bodies.
