‪And in Derbent, I'm very
liked it!!!
It's really amazing out there. The ancient city of Derbent. Golden City.

Everyone should visit Derbent sometime.

The Derbent Juma mosque was closed. There was some sort of renovation.
The most interesting is the Citadel of Narym-Kala. Fortress Narym-Kala, this is the most interesting.

The fortress is a palace for the nobles, a palace, a space for the Nobles. Golden Fortress of Narym-Kala. I was really happy to be there.

To be in Derbent for once in your life is extremely exciting.
One of the oldest cities in Russia. I think so. In summer it's a very nice beach, it's very nice to swim on the sea. Very nice coastline. Smooth entrance to the sea. The sea is so clear. But a little choppy. The sea is not safe, dangerous currents flow through it. The current can take you out to sea. On the beach in Derbent there is a very nice Golden Sand with golden shells. Summer swimming is really one pleasure.

You must definitely visit all events, you must definitely visit all sights. Including a visit to the Derbent Cognac Factory. There are these huge barrels, round oak barrels, one on top of the other. Two or even three rows. Oak barrels, very interesting to see. Oak barrels there give certain compounds to cognac.

For once in your life, visiting Derbent could change your whole life.‬

‪It is believed that this is the oldest mosque in Russia. And the plane trees on its territory are definitely very ancient, they are more than 350 years old, and are considered the second in the ranking of the oldest trees in Europe.‬

‪The Juma Mosque of Derbent is the oldest in modern Russia. According to Arab historians, the sacral was erected in 734 (or in 115 AH, as the inscription above the central entrance says). Of course, over such a long period of time, the mosque was rebuilt several times, including after the earthquake in the 14th century. The final architectural complex, which included a madrasah, a fence and a courtyard, was formed only at the beginning of the 19th century. The Soviet years passed without any major losses, the building survived, but not without desecration: a prison was set up here. However, already during the Great Patriotic War, the sacral was again returned to believers and repaired. The mosque is operational, so it is not a fact that an ordinary tourist will be able to get inside, although he is allowed there. Our arrival occurred during Ramadan, so access was limited. But we still managed to explore the courtyard with the mighty plane trees, which have been growing here for about eight centuries (they are even recognized as natural monuments).‬

‪My Derbent trip in August 2023 was full of surprises, interesting things, mysteries, originalities, etc. When I first found myself in Dagestan (in general) and Derbent (in particular), I was really stunned by the flow of interesting information about the city itself and a number of its must-sees. Although, it must be admitted, the attractions are Bab-al-abwab (“Gate of the Gate”), as the Arabs called it, Temir-kapi (“Iron Gate”), as the Tatar-Mongols and Turks called it, Dzgvis-Kari (“Sea Gate” ) - under this name it was listed among the Georgians, simply “Iron Gates” - as my compatriots called the city - are still waiting for their discoverers.
It's no joke - on the website of the most advanced travel lovers in Derbent there are ONLY three dozen must see!!! And this is in a city with a history of TWO THOUSAND YEARS!!! Although familiar natives claim that all this is lies and Derbent is, in fact, FIVE thousand years old... I don’t know exactly how many mosques there are in this city - some sources write that 30, others - that about 5 dozen - at the very best famous not only in Dagestan or Russia, but throughout the world - the ancient Juma Mosque.
This post is dedicated to her. Having conquered Iran, Muslims, under the reign of the second Righteous Caliph Umar, reached the walls of Derbent in 643. The Muslim leader Abu Muslim, according to chronicle sources, settled 20 thousand Arab soldiers here. Initially, the conquerors did not have their own religious buildings, so they performed the five obligatory prayers in Islam (Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha) in an open space.
Quite expectedly, given the huge number of Arab immigrants and newly converted local residents, the question of building Muslim sacred places arose. In 733, one mosque was built in each of the mahals of Derbent. Along with these mosques, a large mosque was erected in the then city center for performing general Friday prayers - the Juma Mosque or al-Masjid-ul-Jamia.
History, alas, has not preserved the name of the architect according to whose design this building was built, but ancient chronicles allow modern historians to claim that the Juma Mosque was built in 115 AH (corresponding to 733 according to European chronology) by the Arab commander who conquered Derbent Maslamoy ibn Abd al-Malik (also known as Abu Muslim). Alas, to my deepest regret, I was not able to get into this sacred place: the sign at the entrance “sadly” told me that due to the mourning events of the month of Muharram (what kind of mourning? What kind of Muharram?) the mosque is closed to tourists from the middle July to mid September...
It's sad... Therefore, through the open gate, I managed to take a photo of the interior of the mosque's courtyard, and also capture its huge 17-meter-tall dome from the southwestern side. What I saw allows me to assume that, unlike the Istanbul mosques I had previously visited, in its spatial composition the Juma Mosque is more reminiscent of the early Christian Syrian basilicas of the 8th century.
Probably, it was this circumstance that allowed a number of researchers to put forward the version that the Juma Mosque was originally an ancient Christian temple, which the conquerors converted into a mosque. The fact is that in the initial period of the spread of Islam, the very first mosques were often rebuilt from Christian basilicas.
At the same time, the three-nave Syrian Christian basilicas, canonically located along the “east-west” axis, seemed to be rotated by 90°. At the same time, the longitudinal naves turned into transverse ones, and the apse in the end eastern wall was replaced by a mihrab in the center of the southern longitudinal wall. But this version, in general, is not supported by most historians. One of the inscriptions in the Juma Mosque reports that in 1368 the sacral was seriously rebuilt (or restored after destruction) with the direct participation of the master Taj ad-Din ben Musa, a Baku builder.
The Decembrist writer Alexander Bestuzhev-Marlinsky, who was in exile in Derbent in the 30s of the 19th century, wrote amazing lines about his visit to the Juma Mosque: “...A verse from the Koran burns above the main doors. Enter, and suddenly a kind of darkness envelops you, an involuntary silence of respect captivates you...” Neither subtract nor add... The years of Soviet anti-religious outrage also affected the religious buildings of Derbent: in 1938, the Juma Mosque was closed, and the NKVD pre-trial detention center was located in its building. And suddenly in 1943, by urgent order from the Mother See, the mosque was unexpectedly returned to the believers. But!!!
According to a number of sources, originally Sunni, it was transferred to the Shiite clergy!!! This is where the “hand” on the dome comes from instead of the usual crescent!!! Despite the fact that my acquaintance with the Derbent Juma Mosque was very superficial due to objective circumstances, I recommend travel lovers to visit this object if possible.‬
