The main attraction of Zaraisk is the Kremlin here. I believe there can be no two opinions on this matter: Russia's smallest surviving Kremlin, which is a unique monument of Russian fortress-building, is rightly considered must see No. 1 of Zaraisk. But, take my word for the old traveloman, his "inside" is no less interesting!!! Judge for yourself: THREE temples, a hay chapel, a well-kept area – all this will be interesting to both the sacred architect and the just curious tourist.
The oldest, in its present form, is the Cathedral of Nicholas the Wonderworker. Modestly huddled in the south-eastern corner of the Kremlin, on the inside of the fortress yarn between the Trinity Gate and the Kabatskaya Tower, according to researchers it was built as early as the second half of the 17th century (some architecture gurus believe we can speak of 1681), during the reign of Tsar Fyodor III Alexeyevich, and almost at the behest of the latter.
Although the history of this sacral goes back centuries for at least four more centuries!!! Can you believe it? And its erection is historically associated with an agiographic work dedicated to miracles from the icon of St. Nicholas of Mirliki (Nikola Zaraisky) – the "Tale of the Transfer of the Image of Nicholas the Wonderworker from Korsun to Ryazan". If anyone was interested, they remember that in 1225 the iconographic image of Nicholas the Wonderworker was delivered by the Jew Eustathius Raka from Korsun to the sharp called Krasny (forerunner of Zaraisk), which by virtue of its new location was named "Nikola Zaraisky".
The priest explained his act – bringing the icon from Korsun to Zaraisk – with a vision, during which a bizarre face commanded him to bring it to the Ryazan lands: “There I want to be and wonders of creation and a place to be celebrated.” It was in honour of and for this holy face that the first wooden St. Nicholas Church was built. When it was replaced by a stone structure – God knows, though some researchers believe it may be 1625 – two stone Zarai Kremlin churches – St. John the Baptist and St. Nicholas – were already mentioned in the chronicles of that time. Strange as it may sound, the first stone sacral was short-lived – and so, as I mentioned above, the current cathedral was built in 1681.
If we talk about the architectural side of the question, with my hand on my heart, let me be honest - the Zarai Cathedral of Nicholas the Wonderworker well completely "did not catch". From the word 'at all' ... Well, take a look at the photos I've taken: tall, I don't know how to say whether it's a two-light elevated mega-cube or a three-light main volume mega-cube; traditional but, in this case, unexpressive mosquitoes; a completely unimpressive quintuplet; lapidary to no outdoor decor; at the same time - an interesting enough apsidar part with the original overlap...
Still, I can't say that St. Nicholas Cathedral is not beautiful – it's just this beauty that's hidden... Perhaps it is necessary to remember here that the ancient temple-makers of Russia knew how to correctly present the apparent modesty of appearance. The very visit to the Zarai Kremlin without familiarity with the Cathedral of Nicholas the Wonderworker will be somehow unfinished, in my humble opinion. So I recommend it unequivocally!!!

Beautiful church. Summer. It was barbarically destroyed, the frescoes inside were knocked down. There are beautiful crosses on the domes that have been preserved.

It was even a greater challenge when I came there in February. Windy, icy, and extremely slippery outside.
Since the place was closed, I was only able to snap exterior photos.
Perhaps in the summertime...

I tried to get there in September, when I was in Zaraysk on business. He finished the negotiations quickly (they shook hands) and then went to the Kremlin, especially since the weather was simply wonderful for that month.
I came, and everything was dug up, and there was a fence (at least not as tall as a cathedral). This way and that - don’t come close. It was a shame I took a photo, and it didn’t work out very well: the natural lighting there is favorable strictly at a certain time (not like when I was struggling there).
In general, the attraction is still difficult, and it is unknown when this burden will end.
