During my visit to Zaraisk, in addition to getting acquainted with the churches here, I brought a couple of chapels to my sacred "asset". I discovered the first one quite by chance in the fence of the Trinity Church, or rather in its northwest corner, which is on Soviet Street. Harmoniously inscribed in the modest enclosure of the church, it is immediately conspicuous by its elegant forms.
I couldn’t find out the exact date of its construction, but based on the architectural style – and the mini-sacrament, as you can see in my photo, is built in the Russian style – I would assume that we are talking about the second half of the 19th century. By the way, in many sources the style of this chapel, consecrated like the nearby church, in honor of the Trinity of the Living Primal, is called "pseudo-Russian".
I am not in favour of the use of this term, which, according to a number of authors, really “smells” of communist-atheist propaganda in the “service” of the last Soviet art history.
Although the “Neo-Russian” and “pseudo-Russian” controversy began as early as 1910, when representatives of two particular Russian styles – “historism” and “modernism” – tried to “measure themselves by testicles”, contrasting the Neorussian style (the Church of the Saviour of the Non-Man-Made Image in Abramtsev by Victor Vasnetsov, the Church of the Saviour of the Non-Man-Made Image in Ivanovo-Voznesensk by Fyodor Shechtel, the Church of Sergius of Radonezh in the Kulikov Field by Alexei Shchusev) with the pseudo-Russian style (the Church of the Saviour of the Transfiguration of the Lord by the Leib Guard of the Grenadier Regiment by Konstantin Ton, the cathedral church of the Kazan Monastery of Shamorda of St. Ambrosius by Sergei Sherwood, the Church of the Nativity of the Holy Virgin in Vanadzor by Alexander Pomerantsev).
But let's leave the debate to the scientists and return to our facility. The powerful, square quadripartite structure bears on its "shoulders" a quadripartite pedestal with cut corners, which is the main tented completion of the mini-sacral crowned by the Orthodox cross. The exterior decor is off the charts: here you have imitations of mosquitoes on the facades, a plethora of keel-shaped kokoshniks, "belly" columns in the niches of the pilasters, a graceful cornice at the base of the tent, and even a "handful" of warrant "sugars"!!! By the way, the Zarai Trinity Chapel is attached to the Trinity Church, but is attached to the Cathedral of Nicholas the Wonderworker and is now used as a church shop.
This is due to the fact that the Trinity Church has not yet fully regained its status as a religious building of the ROC, so both it and the nearby chapel are assigned to the St. Nicholas parish of the Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. Don't miss it!!!
