‪Visited a couple of days ago and very glad we made the effort to visit and do the walk. Definitely requires a reasonable level of fitness and stamina, particularly during the summer. Temperatures were in the mid 30's C so drinking plenty of water was essential. Luckily there are fairly regular water points being either taps or natural springs along the path to replenish bottles. I wouldn't say the path is ever particularly steep even at the start, it's a nicely graded path that drops down in hairpins to get you to the bottom of the gorge fairly quickly. Care does have to be taken throughout the walk on foot placement as it is quite rocky and because of the footfall many of the rocks are quite shiny and slippy. I did end up on my backside once as I'd got distracted. However I'd say the walk is no more dangerous than any other natural path/track. Obviously accidents can happen but that can happen anywhere. As far as heat is concerned a lot of the path is under the cover of trees but towards the end (so the hotter part of the day) there is more open ground and it was blisteringly hot. After you leave the national park you have to produce the ticket you purchased at the top and there are a couple of places there to grab a drink or snack. You still have approx 3km to walk though to get to the ferry. As far as getting to and from Samaria is concerned we used the public bus rather than using an excursion and that was very straightforward. Simply get your tickets for the bus and for the ferry at Chania bus station. We took the 7:45 bus from Chania which took about 1hr to the top of the gorge. The bus back from Hora Sfakion waits for the ferry as it arrives at 6:30. We were slightly nervous as the ferry was delayed by about 20 minutes after an issue at Loutro. As it was the bus, as advertised, was still there, in fact there were two buses to accommodate all. You pick up the public bus in exactly the same place as the tour buses so just follow the crowds off the ferry! Got to say I was very impressed with the public buses (coaches really). All in all a great but very tiring day, resulting in sore calves and blistered feet. ‬

‪Esperienza devastante! The first two kilometers of descent destroy the legs. The gorge is beautiful and you can not only see but also smell it with its scents of Mediterranean scrub and conifers. The water found at the refreshment points is a balm for body and spirit. The route is sometimes not easy to find and some crossings are quite adventurous. The final swim in the sea is indescribable. To do with technical footwear and poles.‬

‪We left Omalos, where we parked the car for 5€ for the whole day. Parking just before arriving at the access to the park, along the road, would be free... but we did not know. There at the entrance we bought the bus tickets that from Sougia would take us back to Omalos, at 7€ each. Then we entered the park. Entrance to the park costs €5 per person and you must keep the ticket until the end of the route, to allow entry / exit controls from the park. The route is long (about 14 km) but definitely feasible for those who are averagely trained. It's all downhill. The first part is a bit steeper, under the shade of the forest. The second part is flatter, almost always under the sun because you walk in the river bed. Highly recommended hiking shoes. The landscapes are breathtaking throughout the journey, especially in the second part. At the end, you can walk another 2.5 km to get to Agia Roumeli. Arriving early in Agia Roumeli, we took the opportunity for a long swim in the crystal clear waters. Here you can buy your ferry ticket to Sougia. The boat leaves at 17.30 and the ticket costs 15€. After an hour by boat you arrive in Sougia where you can take the scheduled bus back to Omalos. The bus ride to Omalos takes another hour so you arrive around 7.45/8pm. Beautiful hike, overall a bit 'expensive but in my opinion worth it! The landscapes covered are really beautiful! ‬

‪Samaria Gorge National Park

Sfakia

Southern Europe is experiencing hotter summers than we have been used too and this is having an impact on the activities that are safe for tourists to undertake.

The 18km hike through Chania Gorge is across uneven steep terrain and has always been challenging,
It is now in my opinion, far too dangerous to undertake when the temperatures are almost 40°.

Trips to the gorge are sold by agents who do not warn purchasers how challenging it is.
The warnings come from the tour operator and are delivered by the guide on entering the car park bu which time it is far too late to comply with most of the advice.

For tourists, please research this properly and ensure that your insurance will cover evacuation and medical costs if you twist an ankle or worse.

The Greek Park authorities and tour sellers please consider whether continuing to promote this to all and sundry is wise.‬

‪If you love walking and natural landscapes, you can not miss the gorges of Samaria!
We left the car in Omalos and started the route around 8am. I suggest starting early in the morning so that you can enjoy the beach of Agia Roumeli a little longer, since the only useful ferry back is at 5.30pm. To get to the end of the park (13.3 km in total) it took us about 5 and a half hours, although we made stops in the middle and were not people with a particular training. At the end of the park you can take either a bus to reach the beach or continue on foot (indicatively, another 40-50 minutes of walking, but in the sun, so it can be a bit challenging after the distance already traveled). The initial descent proceeds between steps carved into the rock and is entirely delimited by fences on the side of the overhang. Gradually the path becomes less steep (it is mostly shaded) until you reach the river bed, where parts completely in the sun alternate with parts in the shade. On this last stretch you have to pay more attention to the stones, but nothing that cannot be tackled with the right shoes and attention.
I highly recommend bringing sunscreen and hat for sunny stretches. For water, there are several stations where you can refill, so I think starting with 2l per person may be enough.
The path is obviously a bit tiring, but perfectly suitable for healthy people. The beauty of the surrounding landscape, then, absolutely pays off from fatigue and swimming in the water at the end of the path is definitely regenerating!‬

‪One of the best hikes I ever experienced and I came from mountains. I wasn't sure at the beginning as I am pregnant and I have also 2 years old girl but I didn't want to go without her. And I don't regret it! You will definitely need carrier as it's mainly hikes on stones and you will need suitable hiking shoes as it will get slippery. I witness some of the people slipped and it wasn't pleasant. Rangers did worry a lot with us but we were extremely careful and made it in 6 hours. We were lucky because they let us but definitely check before you go. She did want to stay on me first 2 km as she only woke up but then my partner took her and she did enjoy the whole trip and I am so proud of her! The hike itself is down the mountain and on the end of the hiking you will feel your feet lol. But as I said it's worth it and it was the best trip we did in Crete and I love beaches. Following day we stayed at hotel as we needed to recover lol‬

‪Stunning scenery. An experience of a lifetime. But be warned. It is not easy. I thought I was a very fit 77 year old but this trek took its toll. Once you start, you have to finish. The map says 16 Kms or 10 miles. The mobile says we did 14 miles to the village by the sea. Almost a month later I still have very sore Achilles tendons. Lessons. 1. Take your time, don’t rush. 2. Get fit beforehand by doing plenty of walking, especially on up and downhills. 3. When walking the Gorge, stop before you take a photo or view the scenery. Very easy to trip up. I did it twice. 4. Wear stout footwear that is worn in. I wore well-worn Keen walking shoes that were beyond their best and I paid the price of very sore feet and ankles. 5. Do it. Don’t shirk it. The sense of achievement is mind blowing. I walked the 500-mile Camino Frances 6 years ago and that was a doddle in terms of terrain compared to the Farangi Samarias. However, at the end of the day it is a wonder to behold.‬

‪Don't go there if you're not a hiking pro!!
The hike is very complicated, with very hard and slippery stones. We weren't able to enjoy the landscape because we had to concentrate on our steps.
Take water and something to eat!!
The guides are super nice and speak more languages.
Leave very early otherwise you miss the boat, if you miss it it's 120€ for the taxi boat.
The gorges are 13km long but after 3 km you need to go to the beach!!!!!!
You will pay 5€ for parking, 5€ for entry, 15 euros for boats and 7€ for buses to return to the car.‬

‪A beautiful path. However, you need really good shoes, sun protection for your head and sun cream. I was wearing hiking shoes and still slipped. I found the 4 km descent very strenuous because you always have to look carefully where you are going. At the beginning, everyone starts together, of course, and it gets very narrow in places. It's not a walk in the park. You should definitely be in good shape. I wouldn't do the gorge again because I think it's too dangerous. There is no medical care if something should happen.‬

‪We, two 60 year old females, pretty fit, hiked from the top to the bottom. We expected it to take 4-5 hours, but it actually took 6.75 hours with only a few 5 minute breaks. Younger folks could do this in 4 hours or so, but you need good joints to do so. A lovely and rewarding hike, albeit grueling. Starts off pretty steep for a couple of miles and flattens out but is never flat and remains mostly downhill. A few minor uphills. The real challenge is that most the hike involves picking your way through very rocky terrain, similar to walking through a river bed strewn with rocks of all shapes and sizes. We had hiking boots, and needed them for stability and to protect our feet which were aching at the end. It was in the high 80s and sunny when we did the hike, and each of us took 3 liters of water. We needed all of that and had to refill at the springs en route. They were friendly aid officers stationed throughout the gorge and help would be available if required. They had rescue donkeys for anyone unable to continue. Towards the end it became a real challenge to keep going, and we only just made the ferry back to Chora Skafion. Miss it and you spend the night there! A great day out but know what you are getting into because this is a long and tough hard hike. Very challenging if you are not a spring chicken but also very rewarding. Highly recommend but come well prepared.‬
