We drove quite a distance only to find the trail we planned to walk was closed. The state parks (with the exception of Pt. Lobos State Natural Preserve) in the area are underfunded, which is shame given the Big Sur region once was one of California's most brilliant gems.

The path to McWay falls is partially closed due to path damage. You cannot go to the end and see the lovely view of the upper coast. The view of the waterfall is also compromised as you don't get the view angle that everyone used to capture. I wouldn't go again until the state fixes the path.

In Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park is the McWay Waterfall Cove Viewpoint with trailhead. Here you had to pay for the parking yourself. There are also toilets here.
A small trail on the slope leads after about 200 meters to the viewpoint, with a view down and over to the waterfall. The back part of the path, where you could have looked over better, was closed. Rotten wooden railing that I didn't even dare to go closer to and a slipped path.
It was probably high tide. Because from the pictures I actually know the waterfall with a beach and turquoise blue Caribbean sea. But today it was just a small rippling channel that falls directly into the gray sea of waves.

This is a beautiful park - well worth the extra time to travel down from Big Sur (if you're coming in from Carmel direction). The McWay falls are beautiful and there are a number of great walks.

A great coastal road. That alone made it worth traveling to California. Unfortunately, Highway 1 was not passable all the way.

This was a great park in the past, but as of 2023 essentially all the trails are closed due to damage from last winter's rains. Right now, there is only one trail open, and even it is closed after just a short walk. Visit this in future years, but only after checking the web site to see which trails are open.

Idyllic beach- very narrow lanes to the beach. Not suitable for RV or trailer. Lovely walk through the trees to a white sandy beach ⛱

Home to McWay Falls, the only waterfall that directly falls into the ocean. Tucked away into the mountains, great trails here along the creek with beautiful views of the ocean.

Julie Pfeiffer Burns State Park is along Highway 1 on the Big Sur coast. It is a beautiful park set in the Santa Lucia Mountains and the Pacific coastline. My family and I stopped and hiked here on our drive down Highway 1. It is a beautiful place and I recommend a visit.

The scenery is very beautiful!!! But we came across a coral snake which is a venomous snake when we were walking along the road, and it was less than 1 meter away! We were so scared at that time so we didn't take a photo. But I am sure it is the same breed as the snake in the picture I found online. Just want to remind everyone to pay attention to the grass, it can be dangerous.

Will this be ok to visit with a 2 yr old? I’ve read in the reviews that the falls is just a 5-10 min hike from the parking lot. Any other trails or places to look at? Will be visiting in june 2024

Is the trail open for Mcway waterfall and are you able to get to the viewing platform?
كُتب بتاريخ 20 سبتمبر 2019
It is true that you can see the falls from the point at which the trail is closed but if your only reason to enter the park is to see the falls, save your money and view the falls from the roadside pullout which is free.

I’m not sure if it is just 3 parks. We drove to Point Lobos, Pfeiffer Big Sur, and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State parks on a single day with the $10 Receipt which we got at Point lobos. I guess all state parks in the area are accessible for the day with a single entry, not sure though you can ask a ranger at the first park you visit

Hi, I am traveling from Pacific Grove to perhaps stay in Carpinteria. I have never stayed here. Any suggestions if this is a good stop. I will be driving the scenic route from Pacific Grove to Carpinteria. I do not want the fastest route as I have a friend with me that has never seen the coast. Can you tell me how long it will take with stops of coarse? Also are there any road closures still in effect? We will be traveling on 9/15 which is a Saturday morning. My flight leaves at noon so I will need to be to LAX by 10:00. I know you cannot take the 1 the whole way as it winds inland. Can you refresh my memory where we have to leave the 1 and where we pick it up again? Thanks for everything. I love Trip Advisor.

The road is closed about 30 miles south of this park. I’d suggest if you still want to see Big Sur that you go south about 8 miles past the park to Nacemiento Road which is a gravel but decent road that crosses the mountain and takes you over to 101. It’s quite curvy but unless you’re a nervous driver it shouldn’t be a problem. It’s beautiful near the top of the mountain and unbelievable views of the entire coast. Enjoy!

Hi I will be driving from pacific grove to Santa Barbara for 1 night then to lax.
What are suggestions to do in Santa Barbara's for a night?
I will be traveling in mid sept 2018 so and wish to take the 1 the whole way. Will there be any road closures from past landslides I should be aware of? What are your interesting suggestions on must see spots? How long will it take to drive from PG or Santa Barbara with stops?

By then all road closures due to mud slides should be open again. Must see items along Big Sur. Elephant seals just north of Hearst Castle, well marked with signs. Julia Pfeffer Burns State Park. Walk to the ocean to see the water falls that spills into the surf. Quite possibly the most beautiful state park in the whole country. Ragged Point Restaurant for dinner at sunset. Absolutely exquisite!!
