‪Preikestolen is located 600 meters above one of the deepest fjords in Norway – Luse Fjord. The top of the cliff is a square measuring 25 by 25 meters, which offers a breathtaking view of the fjord. The approximate age of the rock is 10,000 years. The Pulpit is one of the most easily accessible attractions in Norway, as it is located near Stavanger. The road to Preikestolen is divided into 2 parts: by bus and by foot. By bus you need to get from Stavanger to the Preikestolen Parking lot, from which the bus trail begins. There are two companies that can be reached directly: Go Fjords (from Radisson Hotel) and Pulpit Rock Tours (from Clarion, Thon, Scandik hotels). This is the fastest and most expensive way. Tickets can only be purchased online. I did not do this in advance, I chose public transport. I took bus 100 Columbus from the bus terminal in Jørpeland to the other side of the fjord of the world's longest subsea tunnel, Ryfylketunnelen. It cost 95 Nkr in one direction. Without waiting for the bus to the parking lot, I walked. From Jørpeland to Preikestolen Parking is about 8 km along the fjord, and then uphill along an asphalt road. It's not difficult. The road to Preikestolen begins from the parking lot, which can only be reached on foot. The route is only 4 km long, but since you have to go uphill and not always on a good trail, the round trip takes 3-4 hours, depending on the level of training. The first 15 minutes are the easiest, because you walk along a wide pebble road. Then the sweet life ends and you have to walk a narrow path strewn with stones. Then there is a beautiful lake where you can rest. After that, the ascent of the stone staircase begins. It requires concentration of strength and attention, because ankle sprain is the most common injury among mountain tourists. The last section of the path is a trail along the cliff with a fascinating view of the Luce Fjord. It is impossible to get lost on the trail, because there are posts along it indicating the distance from the parking lot to the Preikestolen and vice versa. I was lucky with the weather on the trip, but this is the exception rather than the rule. The wind is at the top, often squally, so you should stock up on appropriate clothing. There is a queue at the edge of the "Pulpit" to take a photo. if there are several of you, then you can take a photo from the side. For a classic photo with a "Pulpit" and Luce fjord at the bottom, you need to climb another mountain above the "Pulpit". I didn't have the strength for that anymore. " The return journey is faster, but more dangerous, again because of the threat of ankle sprain. It is better not to rush, and even more so not to run. I took a taxi from the parking lot to Jørpeland with two American women. It turned out to be only 100 NKr per person, and then again by bus 100. I got 45,000 steps on my pedometer in a day. Decent, but compared to what was waiting for me on Trolltunga, it was an easy walk.‬

‪The weather was wet wet wet so we were surprised the hike was ON. Nonetheless it was a beautiful hike made challenging by the strong winds, heavy rain and hail. Thankfully, we were blessed with some brief fjord views when we reached the Pulpit Rock! Our quiet guide and group was caring and looked out for each other. ‬

‪The towering Pulpit Rock is at the end of 4km trail. It is a hike with moderate difficulty that rewards the adventurous tourists with breathtaking views of the Lysefjord and spectacular scenery. Be sure to prepare yourself for the hike, by wearing comfortable shoes and pants (jeans are not recommended) and by bringing water and food for refueling. Also note that weather conditions can change very fast at the top of the mountain, so it is always advisable to bring additional warm and wetproof clothes. For a complete experience, I recommend taking the Preikestolen cruise & hike, which includes a cruise through the Lysefjord and a bus ride to the beginning of the Pulpit Rock trail. Tickets for this experience can be purchased online. ‬

‪My wife and I took her parents on this hike which we were led to believe it was 'moderate' rating. Certainly learnt that European hiking trail grading system is harder than Australia. As such, my in-laws had to stop about 3km in to reserve energy to return back down.
Personally I loved the hike and think I could do it comfortably < 3hrs return however took us closer to 5 with the oldies. Thankfully no injuries but I'd hate for someone to get injured up there as no easy access back.

Great to see the rock in it's natural beauty but slightly concerned that those people choosing to get the Insta-worthy shot sitting with legs hanging off the edge, would hate for the trail to be closed and fenced because of a careless mistake.

Assume the flowing water along the trail is drinkable so no need to pack a heap, just refill. ‬

‪We are in our mid 60s and exercise but not regularly. It took us four hours r.t. to hike the Preikestolen minus picture taking and having snacks when we got there (10:00 a.m. to 14:20 p.m.).

For me it was a moderate difficulty trail although on our return hike it was raining; hence, our descent was more challenging. There are no outhouses along the trail so use the bathroom before you start your hike.

Mr. Sander of Thon Hotel Stavanger advised us not to take a tour; rather to take the bus and hike on our own.
We booked the Boreal express bus (pink and white) online. It stops at Klubggata across our hotel when we flag it.

Please refer to the pictures to gauge whether or not you would hike the Preikestolen. The incline at the very beginning made me huff and puff but the rest were negotiable. There was a long stretch of stairs of rocks amongst other short ones. Where there are clearings, there are short flat parts of the trail with either gravel or boardwalk.

Always look for the steel markers (approximately 18-24” in height and 2” in width) with arrows and distance in order to head in the right direction as there are areas where the semi flat boulders are expansive. The distance sort of encourages you when the climb feels tough.

The vista of Lysefjord as you approach the last climb and on the Preikestolen itself is magnificent! It is absolutely worth flying to Stavanger and hiking up the mountain!!

We heeded the advice of bloggers and had layers of clothes, hiking boots with very good grip and ankle protection, raincoat in case it rains, water, apples, snack bars, dry clothes to change into, and most importantly, our phones for capturing the captivating scenery.

The Hiker’s Cafe was still open on 15 September 2023 so we were able to have hot chocolate after our hike.‬
