Fantastic to see such a wonderful structure that was first built in the 1600's and last used in early 1903/4. Great to walk round with kids and dogs. Lovely friendly staff and it is a Heritage Building (so if you're a member you can go in for free), general admission is approx nine pounds for an adult. There's a nice little shop there too, where they sell souvenirs and coffee.

We visited with family from abroad. The children really enjoyed the site and its strategic history. There are Officer living quarters from the past. The fort overlooks the River Thames and is opposite Gravesend. You get the ferry over from nearby. There is a compact parking area outside and you can walk along the sea wall. There is small gift shop.

A little hidden gem in Tilbury Essex. Went here as I am an English Heritage member. Good history about the place. Old cannons on view. Lovely views overlooking the Thames. Went here not expecting much, but was very pleasantly surprised.

Great few hours out at Tilbury Fort, many references to history throughout and fantastic little guide book sold (£3.50) which brought the fort to life. The children had a great time exploring the area and the hills and playing with the big guns, so did the adults.

We arrived early and enjoyed a couple of hrs around the fort and had a play with the big guns.
It never got over busy as it is huge.
We had a nice coffee from the shop which was reasonably priced. All in all a great morning out.

Stopped here at the end of a bike ride and very glad we did.
Able to lock bikes up securely and wander the fort for an hour. So much history and so well preserved. The old ammunition tunnels were well worth seeing, the magazines are impressive and the views across the estuary are beautiful.

We were delighted by its sheer historical reference and the way it was planned. A small blockhouse with artillery covering the river, was constructed by King Henry VIII to protect London against attack from France. It was constructed in 16th century. Nice place to go .

A real Gem, a bit tricky to find although well signposted. Lots to see and explore with good informative boards throughout. Some great views across the Thams also. The staff were pleasent and helpful. Well worth the effort if you are in the locale

On our Essex Road Trip, we visited Tilbury Fort - one of the most amazing military forts in the UK - The first permanent fortification was built as a consequence of international tensions between England, France and the Holy Roman Empire in the final years of the reign of King Henry VIII.
Situated in a very industrial area of Essex - it is easily missed, as it is along the path and behind the Worlds End Pub.
Whilst there, we stopped by Tilbury Port - where we learnt, one could take the ferry to Graveend and it was also were SS Windrush dock with passengers from the West Indies, in the 50s. There is a Walkway of Memories Bridge, created by EVEWRIGHT.

We are on a cruise ship that docked in Tilbury and saw there was a fort there so we decided to go and have a look.
The fort was put there to help protect London from the armada coming up the Thames. There are many field guns in the fort from pre WW1 to WW2 & one large Navy gun commanding views over the Thames to Gravesend. Inside the fort you have a guard room, chapel, tunnels, power store, & the officers house.
Parking on site is free, grassy areas to sit and have a picnic all in all a nice place.
Staff are very helpful & friendly.

Im thinking of visiting but it says restricted areas for dogs. Where can dogs go? It’s a long way to travel if you can’t see very much. Thank you :-)
Is it free?

Yes dogs are allowed in restricting areas so I am sure the staff will tell you
I'm thinking of taking my disabled father (who is in a wheelchair) and children (8yrs old and 10yrs old)...is it worth visiting on a rainy day or will it be too inaccessible for my father?

I was very fragile when I visited as post op I walked slowly around the parade ground went in the gunpowder room and read all the history went into the house didn't go up stairs. The audio guide is great so I then sat on a bench and listened to the stories while my family did the hills and guns so had fun watching them. It was a lovely day I agree it would be bleak on a rainy day had no shelter.
