I visited on the last day that the building was open for the season. The house is interesting with information sheets in all rooms giving details of the paintings and items on display. The volunteer guides were approachable, enthusiastic and knowledgeable and it was especially nice to meet some of the family members who live there. The building is smaller than many NT properties but there is lots to see and it will be particularly interesting for military historians as the previous owner was an architect who designed many WW1 war cemeteries and memorials.

The house is currently covered in scaffolding so not looking its best. Large parts of the gardens were closed off to visitors. Only a few rooms are open to public.
Tea room room is unique and very nice though so worth a stop if you are a NT member in the area.

Well worth the time to come & spend a couple of hours at this property. So many original features & really lovely that the last owner left the house & contents to the National Trust, as it shows so much of the family & it's a snapshot in time from 1946! The room stewards are really knowledgeable, so it's worth getting them to tell you what they know of the history of the house / Herbert Baker. I didn't find the gardens to be as large or impressive as I expected, but the weather hadn't been great & I expect I could have tried harder.

What a lovely little house off the beaten track. Not far from Jeskins or Bluewater so good to combine.
Voluneers were fantastic & lovely and chatty.
Lovely little garden with giant double swing which was fun! And a self service tea room.
Not overly big so only takes an hour at most

Owletts is on the edge of the small Dickensian village of Cobham in Kent. It is a really nice small national trust property that is worth a visit. It has a small tea room and nice gardens which lead onto a country park. Open Sundays.

I have passed the property a few times but have not been here before as it is only open on Sunday's. This is worth a visit if you are a member or not as the entry is only £4.
The property is the birthplace of Sir Herbert Baker, the architect of such places as The Bank Of England & Port Lympne , and numerous war memorials to name but a few.
The volunteers are informative, and as a bonus, his great grandson lives there and it was nice to chat to him, and hear about lesser known facts of the house and family.
There are only a few rooms in the house that you can go into, but there is still a wealth of lovely things to see in the house. The staircase ceiling is lovely, and the stain glass windows are also very nice. The electrical empire clock hanging above the fireplace is also very beautiful.
There is a small garden where you can have a picnic, where you will see chickens roaming around freely, and a "do it yourself" tea room, where you can make your own tea or coffee, and have a slice of cake, just leave the money in an honesty box, what an excellent idea.
The car park is to the rear of the property, and there is also a toilet on site.
If you plan your trip, you can incorporate the nearby Cobham Wood and Mausoleum NT property, but the mausoleum is only open on the first Sunday of the month, so it is worth checking the NT website.

We have often gone past here and never known it was open to the public. It was £4 entry, the guide was very good. The architecture is amazing and we met his great great grandsons wife and the family. Such a lovely place to visit.

Owletts was the birthplace of Sir Herbert Baker-who went on to design the Bank of England. The house dates back to the 18th century and is very interesting. The staircase ceiling is magnificent and is definitely the best highlight of the property. There is also a special clock which is thought to be the only one in the world.
Outside, there is a pretty garden which on a sunny day bursts with colour. Also outside is a self-service tea room and there is also seating available. There is also a delightful orchard which looks onto the car park.
As well as Owletts, I would also recommend anybody going to nearby NT property, Cobham Wood and Mausoleum. (Please note: Mausoleum only open first Sunday of the month)

What a delight Owletts is: the house is a jewel, beautifully kept and presented, it's aesthetic appeal more than matched by the warmth of the welcome from family and volunteers. Once the home of the architect Sir Herbert Baker, a contemporary and some time colleague of Lutyens, this seventeenth century four square house has been considerably enhanced by his sensitive alterations and improvements.
We had a very pleasant afternoon there, in brilliant sunshine, and the enthusiasm and friendliness of the family members and volunteers present contributed much to the experience. The freshness and obvious pleasure with which they spoke of the house and its contents and features was striking because they cannot but have done so many times before. Make sure you take the time to appreciate the stunning plaster ceiling over the landing and staircase
That the great grandson of Sir Herbert is the present tenant and other members of the family are involved in it undoubtedly contributes to the feel of the house as a comfortable and much loved home.
One very unusual feature, perhaps unique in England, is the self-service tea room, where loose tea and eminently practical spring loaded infusers are available; a facility that adds significantly to the visit and could be emulated to advantage in many other historic properties.
Many thanks to all at Owletts for their contribution to our delightful afternoon.

Amazingly, after many years of NT membership, this was our first visit. A lovely peaceful afternoon. The volunteers in the house were very informative, the history of the property is interesting, nice to talk to the current incumbent and his wife - he is a grandson or great grandson of the owner mentioned in the house - an architect who worked with Lutyens on a couple of occasions but designed many places of interest particularly in India. The cat and dog are extremely friendly, there is no shop (which is good in our opinion ) and the tea 'n coffee (+ great cake selection!) is self service with an Honesty Box. For non members, at £4 a person it's well worth a visit - the dog seemed to really like attention from younger visitors by the look of it too! Free parking as well. Only open on Sundays but worth a visit. A great time...we will be back!

I read these reviews with great interest as I worked there as an Au Pair about 25 years ago. The family was living there then so I was interested to read the review of the children throwing their toys down the stairs - clearly not the same children I looked after - so I wonder if it is them and THEIR children now living there?

Gday Mrs. H, My wife and I and children have lived here since 2012, my cousins before that, and I lived here as a child until the mid 90s. So, yes, the child may have been mine and I may have been that child 25 years ago, well a large child by that time
Then if you had come earlier, there have been Bakers here since 1793.
We hope you come again soon and reminisce!
David Baker
