We have lived near this place for an embarrassingly long time - and finally visited it today with dog and walking friends. Overwhelmed by the beauty of the place - views are stunning and it really feels like you are ‘away from it all’ in every sense.
The M4 pounds away silently in the distance while you lie back and watch the leaves stirring and red kites soaring - truly magical. Accessible from many places if you don’t mind a walk. Wiltshire , once again, surprises and delights!

A hidden gem. Fabulous views and located by the gorgeous salthrop woods - a must visit location. Very peaceful

Having taken the kids to most of the local attractions, we decided to get away from it all for a few hours of the Bank Holiday weekend and head off on a 'big' family adventure to find Bincknoll Castle.
On the map its located between Broad Hinton and Wroughton, but be warned, there are no sign posts, no car park, and its at least a 2 mile walk skirting around farmers fields.
We parked just off Hay Lane, in a layby near Salthrop Farm, and using the permitted skirted around the barley fields, and through the edge of Quidhampton Wood to approach Bincknoll Castle from the south.
The views across from the castle of Swindon are just about the best views of West Swindon that I've ever seen. Slightly hazy today, but well worth the effort.
The exact history of Bincknoll Castle is unknown, possible an Iron Age univallate hillfort, but no-one really knows.
For us, it allowed the kids to burn of lots of energy, and for us all to get some much needed exercise.
This really is one of Swindon's hidden gems - well worth a walk on a sunny day.
Whilst we were up there we saw one runner, and one family on the walk back to the car - not bad for avoiding the Bank Holiday crowds!
