I should have allowed more time to visit Martin Place, unfortunately only managed photos of a few monuments before having to head elsewhere. The list of unfinished visitations in Sydney is certainly lengthy and will warrant a return visit. Martin Place honours James Martin, son of a horse groom, who through remarkable dedication achieved an education and subsequently became NSE Premier, elected on three occasions and then as Chief Justice. There are some grand buildings and also The Cenotaph.

It is worth taking a detour to walk through Martin Place at Christmas time to see the city’s largest Christmas tree. It stands at 25 metres tall and is decorated with more than 110,000 lights and 330 red, green and white balls.
Every 15 minutes, an impressive kaleidoscope light show starts from (it runs from 7pm to midnight until 1 January, 2023).
There’s a subtle Aussie summer theme going on, with the baubles representing beach balls and 15,000 artificial native Australian flowers covering the tree.
I didn’t notice the flowers at first because I was focussed on the light show but tucked in between the branches and covering the whole tree, you can see 9 different types of flowers including banksia, waratah, bottlebrush, wattle, eucalyptus gum flower, kangaroo paw, flannel flower, pink wax flower and white wax flower.
Smaller versions of the tree are dotted around the city at the Sydney Town Hall, Green Square, Taylor Square, Customs House Square, Union Square at Pyrmont, St Mary’s Cathedral and Fitzroy Gardens at Kings Cross.

Tourists with busy itineraries can easily give Martin Place a miss. It is a fairly unremarkable pedestrian zone in the city which is mainly used by city-workers as a thoroughfare between Macquarie, Pitt and George Streets.
Some people will remember it from 1999 movie, The Matrix. The central fountain featured in the scene where Keanu/Neo gets distracted by the woman in the red dress. Some years later, scenes for Superman Returns were also filmed here.
15 seconds of movie fame aside, Martin Place is normally a nondescript but busy central square.
Its most attractive features are the fountain, the ANZAC Cenotaph (1929) and the heritage buildings on either side of the square. In summer, there are pretty plantings of flowers, which gives it a lift.
For those who have the time and interest, you can see quite a lot of Sydney’s heritage buildings in a very short time because they’re clustered around Martin Place.
The grandest and most significant of these is the General Post Office. Built in 1864-1887 at a time when Australia was flush with funds from the gold rush, it was constructed on a grand scale and at great expense. Other noteworthy buildings include the former Bank of Australasia Building (1908), the former MLC Building (1937-38), the old sandstone Colonial Mutual Life Building (1896), and Challis House (1909). The former State Savings Bank (1928), with an imposing Beaux-Arts facade, massive Ionic columns and dusky pink tiles is worth a quick look, especially because the public can go inside the lavishly restored interior to the grand hall.

Martin Place runs from George Street to Macquarie Street and has the Martin Place underground railway station. It was named Martin Place in 1921 after Sir James Martin (1820-1886) Premier of NSW. It was original known as Moore Street and was a small lane running between George Street and Pitt Street. It has the former General Post Office, many fine architectural buildings,, the ANZAC centopath and Matrix Fountain

Martin Place is one of the few pedestrian areas in the city centre. It is quite a long strip, crossed by a number of streets where vehicular traffic is allowed to go through. The general area is a centre of financial activity as there are several banks and other institutions along its length. There is also a fountain, one of very few in the city! There are many shops as well, including big department stores as well as smaller ones and cafes, restaurants and others. It is a good area to go to for meeting people and some lunchtime relaxation.
