‪Wonderful museum with great art and history‬

‪This place is everything you could want in a museum. Heaps of detailed history into the natural wildlife of Tasmania, as well as some very interesting art pieces that explore other events including the convict past. Their is no entry fee but a donation is offered and fair as this place is incredibly important for preservation and future generational understanding.‬

‪We went to the museum expecting more art. It's a combination of nature/science exhibits and art gallery; while the artwork was limited we found the science of the Arctic to be fascinating. We spent less than one hour there but appreciate that Hobart is a small city and the museum is a lovely space.‬

‪A must-see museum‬

‪Fantastic selection of local art. Plenty of information about the local area and Australian animals. A really cool section on Antarctica as well. Could have spent hours here.‬

‪Great place to spend several hours‬

‪We loved the Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery as it had the perfect amount of collections to not be overwhelming. The museum encompasses the state’s oldest public building, the 1808 Commissariat Provision and is the 2nd oldest museum in Australia. The origins in the collections is from the country’s oldest scientific society, the Royal Society of Tasmania, which was established in 1843.

We enjoyed the Ningina Tunapri exhibit of the aboriginal people; the geological and natural history exhibit that contained native plants & animals, particularly of the Tasmanian tiger; and the Islands to Ice exhibit that showed the Antarctica & southern ocean places, people & animals. Free entrance for the budget conscience traveller, though please leave a donation for the museum upkeep.‬

‪Everyone raves about MONA, which is worth a visit, but if you want a differrent experience close to the CBD, and waterfront this historic building is really worth visiting. it was previously the Customs House, and is full of history, the displays are excellent with something for all ages, but for the history buffs have a look at the Bond store a real glimpse of early Tasmanian history. regular floor talks and activities. I always reccomend TMAG to anyone visiting Tasmania. The cafe is also well worth a visit‬

‪Brilliant place to visit and I would definitely go back. We went twice in our holiday. Worth a visit and taking your time or breaking it up and go back on another day. They have done a great job in show casing the history and artwork. I learnt alot and two of the guides or security people gave me some wonderful extra information on the paintings that were gems.
If you love art and museums it's a must do‬

‪I enjoyed the art gallery, lots to look at and some very interesting things to see. I especially enjoyed the painting of the boat with the female convicts, reading their descriptions gave me a chuckle.‬

‪Unwelcoming‬

‪Staff were fantastic and there is a wide collection of interesting artefacts in n display.

I did find the aboriginal displays to be very unwelcoming. Large signs of “always was, always will be” are divisive.

And the sign at the entrance to the top floor of the colonial building saying “go away” right at the entrance is particularly unwelcoming.

Some context and balance would be in order.‬
