‪This is an interesting museum, with much information about immigration in Australia. It cost 15$ to enter. There is plenty of information; text, photographic and video. It spread over several floors. I wasn’t that busy when a visited on a Wednesday morning.‬

‪Non metto 5 stelle perché è a pagamento: un peccato perché vale la pena che lo vedano tutti. Si capiscono molte cose sulla cultura e la storia‬

‪Australia is a nation made up of people coming from many lands. The current exhibition 'Becoming You' tells the coming of age stories of 72 Australians, of diverse backgrounds. It is very interesting, there are as many stories as there are individuals. The Immigration Museum does not shy away from controversy, including the shabby treatment of Australia's indigenous people and the White Australia Policy.‬

‪Across two floors. Something of interest for everyone. Good place to spend a couple of hours. Did the fake test to be a citizen and it was harder than you would think. Shows your immigrants stories over the years from 1940s to present day.‬

‪Be mindful that they will check your ID & covid vaccine status & ensure you check in before entering, but don't let that sway you, it's well worth visiting this museum. There's so much to read on the different panels here that you could set aside a solid hour or more to see it all, but it's fascinating to read so you can be selective as there's lots of visuals and photos and displays for all to see. One surprise was walking into the massive former customs hall which was so cavernous. The temporary exhibition on the second floor I saw on my visit included personal accounts from immigrants and residents of Melbourne, as well as a section on advertising and groceries and similar items that weren't considered offensive in the past but are very offensive to immigrants today. The entry fee isn't too high, and they allow you to pre-book on their website, very handy, although I was there at 11am on a Saturday and I was on my own for most of the hour I spent there.‬

‪It is often said that Australia is a nation of immigrants, In 1914, Australia had less than 5 million people; now we have 26 million. Without immigration, Australia would be a poorer place. Few families would have no connection to immigrant blood. This museum is very interesting, I have visited it several times, and I have learned someting about our ancestory every time.‬

‪Full of lots of interesting information however it needs to be more engaging. There's only so much you can read. After a while I found myself moving through it quickly, skipping lots of the informational text provided.‬

‪The Immigration Museum is not one of the most interesting museums but it does provide some relevant information about the history of Australia's immigration. There are quite a few different stories that are told. Not a must see, but only if you really want to visit.‬

‪Having been to some great museums similar to this overseas, I really wanted to like this museum and I tried but I just can’t. Firstly, it was so badly sign posted that in between rooms, we constantly wondered which way we should be going and there was no map or guide option offered upon entry. The museum has vast areas of unused space and empty rooms that could be utilised for displays or diorama’s or anything like that, but sadly is wasted.

The main room which gives you a rundown of each decade from settlement to the present day was very scant on information, just bullet points really. At no time do they go into any details as to why certain policies and laws were in place, just fact statements. There’s no audio, just a lot of sign reading. You could get all the information given from a few minutes with google.

Some of the other rooms just left us wondering what the hell those displays had to do with immigration at all such as the tram ride simulation which I thought was totally irrelevant but hilarious.

We get back to the ground floor and we’re asking the guy at the front if we had missed something because we’re sure we have. He points us down the corridor to a resource library. My husband was interested in learning more about his family’s immigration. The library does have a lot of books, some comfy chairs and some computers spread around but the computers were all off and there is absolutely no one around to assist you in any way.

There was a group of primary school children in the museum when we were there and I remarked to my husband that they were the quietest, most well behaved group of kids I had even seen inside a museum. I realise now that they were just so bored, they’d all gone off to the happy place inside their heads. Don’t waste your money on this museum.‬

‪We had moved to Australia just before the pandemic hit, I know great timing right....so it high on our list to visit this museum, to see the footsteps others had taken before us. Interestingly there was some covid content if relation to immigration which I found interesting.‬
