Our visit exceeded our expectations for the most part. The geyser was fine, but it was a bit disheartening to see someone pouring soap into it for it to explode. We definitely found the actual park much more interesting. We walked all three routes. The layout was very easy to follow and provided access to a variety of geothermal highlights. I appreciated the mix of viewpoints and footpaths right next to some of the sights. The Champagne Pool is definitely a highlight, but I recommend walking all three routes if possible. We arrived soon after opening and it wasn't too crowded. I can see it being a bit more difficult to navigate with large crowds.

Interesting, and a good walk. But to be honest, if you've been to Yellowstone or other thermal sites, this one pales in comparison. Lots of mud pots, a couple of pools, not really any geysers.

A place that doesn't leave you indifferent.
Hot, colorful and very striking pools.
You're gonna take a lot of pictures
We went with two boys aged 10 and 12
The tour is easy and the total took us 2 hrs or so

We visited Iceland, Yellowstone and some volcanic areas in Italy, but are still impressed to see these geothermal activities. I admit my expectations were not so high, but it is for sure worth a visit. We were just on time to see the - manipulated - geyser in action. I say 'manipulated' as they ignite it using soap. The big geyser in Iceland was killed using this technique, but it still works for this one. The fact that a Maori girl was singing during this time, created a magical experience. The rest of the parc shows mudpods, fumaroles, small craters, wonderful colored pools...

Superb geological site not to be missed.
I don’t miss the sites offered in the region, but if you have to choose one: it’s definitely this one.
The photos speak for themselves... The colors are crazy!

Wai-O-Tapu is a good thermal choice in that it has a lot of dramatic features concentrated in one small walk. Out of all the geothermal attractions in the Rotorua area, I felt this one had the most that it delivered on. Yes, it is a little touristy, but it's popular for a reason. The walk has three different lengths you can choose from. I recommend doing the longest one or the shortest one. The middle one doesn't really add much to the short walk, but the longer has some interesting features not part of the shortest. The thing you have to factor in with your walk is if you are going to the geyser presentation or not. I arrived at 8:30a and did the long walk and made it over to the geyser by 10:15, but it was quite rushed. I recommend either starting with the geyser then doing the walk or doing the short walk followed by the geyser.
As for the geyser, it's kind of a ridiculous attraction. They put soap in it to make it erupt. When it does erupt, it also spits out soap bubbles. As a lover of roadside attractions, I appreciated how ridiculous this was, but this is anything but a natural wonder. Note that there is also a mud feature that is free and comes before the geyser. This is worth stopping at as you are coming or going. Overall, this is worth seeing despite the touristy nature. It packs a lot of sights into a short walk, which is why it is such a popular destination.

This was my second visit and I was keen to show my 83 year old mother. We took it slowly with lots of stops and water breaks but Mum had a medical episode. I rang Cass at reception and Eragon and Kahu CARRIED mum to a vehicle. There was so much kindness from Bella, Naturelle, Margaret and Eragon. I think it was Kahu who held a bowl while mum vomited.
This is a brilliant experience and we did not expect a medical episode. Take hats and water (as we did) and enjoy the beauty.

Gotta own it-made a mistake visiting this thermal area & wasting an hr. or so of my 2 days in Rotorua. Maybe it would have “lit up” better if hadn’t have been an overcast & slightly drizzly day but doubt it. Perhaps I’m a bit spoiled having been to Iceland where geysers, fumaroles, etc. are plentiful all over the main island-all free-just need to drive to. Or north of the Atacama Desert near the Bolivian border where in one small area over 70 are quite active & spectacular. But then again two hours after this I went on the village walk in Whakarewarewa where they are less plentiful but much closer & bigger. So I recommend you don’t waste your time here-to me it would have been worth about $10 NZ dollars max on a clear day.

We visited the Mud Pools near Wai-O-Tapu first and they were both free and amazing! If you want to see the Lady Knox Geysir, it erupts (with help) at 10:15, but go early to get parking and a good viewing spot. The Wonderland itself was worth the price of admission. Definitely visit on non-rainy weather to appreciate all the walk has to offer. We had sunny weather ourselves. And just down the road are the free hot and cold pools where a hot geothermal stream meets a cold stream -- an interesting experience but be advised not to immerse one's head under water due to a potentially harmful amoeba.

I want to be clear that this is no reflection on the employees at the park, everyone was pleasant and helpful. However, my husband and I did not feel like the cost was worth it. To us, seeing one felt like you’d seen them all. We got bored quickly and, obviously to be expected, but the smell is horrid. I did not adapt to the rotten egg smell. I believe there are cheaper places in the area to see similar things, maybe not as big as this park but we felt like we didn’t that big of a park.

I'm going to take Intercity to Waiotapu Tavern with my luggage, then walk to the park. Is there any place to store my luggage for few hours in Waiotapu tavern?

DO not recall seeing anything, also it's a long walk with no shoulder/sidewalk.

Hi
I am planning to visit Wai-O-Tapu in late January. Just wanted to know if it is required to pre-book tickets for the visit. Also do we need to purchase any other ticket to visit the Lady Knox Geyser
كُتب بتاريخ 17 ديسمبر 2023
I visited in August and did not need to pre-book tickets, we were able to purchase upon arrival and go straight into the grounds. We missed the Geyser, as it only goes off once a day and we arrived right after, but I do not believe there is a ticket required for that, you can drive to that area and see the Geyser before proceeding to the main office to purchase tickets.

I'm thinking of taking Intercity to Waiotapu Tavern. Is it safe to walk along the highway from Waiotapu Tavern to the park?

Yup, it completely safe and a lot of signage along the way!

From memory you are unable to hire a stroller. Not all the walks are suitable for a stroller but there would still be enough to see - the smell can vary - when we were there it wasn't really too noticeable surprisingly enough

Hi there, are there any toilets around the area apart from the visitor centre?
I suffer for an over active bladder and have to go quite frequently which is frustrating!
I don’t want to be caught short when walking around. Tia :)

Morena Holly,
Unfortunately, we only have two locations with toilet blocks, both being around the visitor centre.
We do hope you still decide to visit Wai-O-Tapu to do at least track 1 which takes about 45 minutes (1.5km, round track)
Safe travels Holly!

I am allergic to sulphur drugs. Does that mean I shouldn’t visit this area because I might have an allergic reaction to the sulphate?
Also, my dad is 87 and can’t walk far. How long is the first walking track?
كُتب بتاريخ 24 أكتوبر 2018
I am sensitive to Sulfur and had a systemic allergy response when I went to Rotorua requiring medical intervention. Included rash, hypotension, bronchospasm and headache. Completely resolved a couple days after leaving, but had another milder reaction when I visited a Sulfur hot springs. I would suggest you take some appropriate medications with you just in case
