I found the plaques very interesting and the hydrangeas in the gardens absolutely beautiful - loved the colours from purple, deep blue to bright pink in one garden to white just across the path.
Shame the house is not open to public more frequently.
The mausoleum needs some attention as it is very difficult/almost impossible to read.
If you are visiting the zoo then by all means go a little further to the house however I was disappointed overall after making the effort to travel out here by bus specifically to visit the gardens. The bus only travels once per hour and then you either have half an hour which is not enough or an hour and a half which is too much so I walked a lot of the way back towards town - luckily this way is down hill.

The gardens and house are great for a wander. The founder of Plunkett... Truly King set up the house as a Centre for caring for babies in the 1950's. If you haven't discovered it yet... go for it.

Up the hill from the Zoo in the suburb of Melrose is the Truby King House with its associated garden. The House is dominant on the skyline, with the gardens surrounding it.Truby King the founder is buried on the grounds. The attraction is often open to the public and the gardens are well maintained, and are a pleasure to see.

Truby King was the first "private citizen" NZer to receive a State Funeral in NZ. He set up the Plunket Society - the organisation that from 1908 made huge effects on raising the health of babies and their mothers in NZ - until Neo-Con Governments in the 1990s made their funding "contestable" - and Plunket basically died.
NZ health stats for all babies and their mums have dropped alarmingly since then.
Truby King's house is "a folly" (English people know what I mean ... Cardiff "Castle" is one of those! Wellington versions are somewhat less grand.)
The hospital building is now in private hands so can only be walked around. The views of Wellington from there are worth doing so.
The hospital building won't be there for too much longer. Earthquake risk so likely to be demolished in the next couple of years.
The precinct is very worth a visit. Number 23 Bus. Get off at the top of Mancherster St (second stop after Wellington Zoo), walk 50m back down the hill and see the brick arch.

Beautiful grounds and some great views to see. Need good weather to make the most of it though.

Just when you think you're tramping through town belt, this beautiful garden and old house appears in front of you.
A lovely spot for lunch if you're doing the southern walkway

The Truby King House and Garden is tucked away on the hillside above Wellington Zoo, but definitely worth seeking out if you're nterested in New Zealand history or gardens. It is what remains of the splendid hilltop estate developed by Sir Frederick Truby King, well-known as the founder of the Plunket Society. The old Karitane Hospital and baby products factory are visible, but not part of the current park.
He designed the gardens and planted trees which remain to this day, along with some very interesting brick walls and other landscaping. Only a few of the original rhododendrons remain, but the Wellington City Council is working hard to bring the garden back to some of its former glory, and have planted many rhododendrons and azaleas which were flowering in the most stunning display of colour when I visited. There is a winding network of paths, with viewpoints dotted throughout. Although the original trees are now quite high, there are views through the trees over Wellington Harbour and Cook Strait.
One really interesting feature is a mausoleum where Truby King and his wife are buried, in accordance with his wishes to be buried in his garden. There are some informative informational panels nearby which give more information about his life.
I was fortunate to go on a guided tour, which happens occasionally, so I got to see inside part of the house. Normally only the garden is accessible to the public, either through the front entrance on Manchester St (no 23 bus) or walking along the Southern Walkway.
