Good place for visiting in Christchurch. We spend time in museum at afternoon. The Place was clean and fantastic. Staff are very nice and kind.

If you haven't been to SHIFT: Urban Art Takeover you really need to go. This exhibition will take your breath away and if you no nothing about graffiti or street art this is your time to get acquainted in a non tradition setting for that art.
There are some stunning pieces with so much meaning and this is your only time to see it. True to its art form this whole exhibition is temporary and will totally disappear in April.
There are also some pieces that are easy to just enjoy or are humorous. There is something for everyone.
It is worth every penny and I cannot recommend it more.

The Canterbury Museum is about to close for a five year renovation. None of the traditional displays are currently there. Instead, they let a group of international street artists go nuts with spray cans. It’s a bit like the 90210 episode where Brandon trashed the Walsh house because it was going to get knocked down. Some of the street art is superb. Some of it is very ordinary. I will never understand the appeal of tagging, personally, and thought it was a blight on the space to see it presented as ‘art’. I thought the idea of street art was a great way to transition, but it was overall pretty undignified in execution and the old museum deserved better.

Refreshing new art in an beautiful old building. Had to take an alternative route through the exhibition because of mobility issues, but even that was taken good care off.

I appreciate the museum is to be redeveloped but what is on today is absolute rubbish - you can see better down any rail track. Surely Christchurch can do better than this. Quite the worst museum I have ever visited.

We came but only the bottom floor was ope as they are moving the exhibits. What we did see was really interesting and informative, and for a short stop well worth it. Kids loved the paua house display and old shops. Stunning buliding

Awesome museum ! Free to enter but donations appreciated ! There are some sections where there is a small fee to enter. Has the best Antarctica exhibit and an early Christchurch street to wander ! Also has fun exhibits that come through for shorter periods of time. If you take your time through all of the exhibits you can easily spend the better part of your day here ! Central location makes it easy to pop into while experiencing other parts of Christchurch.

This is a very good museum worth 1.5 hours of your time in Christchurch. It has a very diverse range of exhibitions, and not so overwhelmingly large that you will get exhausted or bored. There are sections on prehistoric times, Maori culture and history, European settlement, life in Christchurch in the late 1800s to early 1900s (with a cute mini replica set of streets with stores that you can walk into), Costume Gallery, the "Paua Shell House", a little Asian Artefacts section and an Antarctica and Canterbury weather section.
Unfortunately about 8 or 9 exhibitions were closed such as the Mummy and Dinosaurs. I believe the museum is closing in 2023 for renovations so it could be the start of exhibition closures.
Still worth a visit. The staff are friendly and it won't take up too much of your time. It is housed in a nice historical building, nestled amongst the Arts Centre where you can visit other neighbouring historical buildings before or after. The other buildings house restaurants, cafes, smaller art museums and interesting shops. On the weekends there are some markets and events scattered across the area. Very nice to walk around the area.
I gave it four stars because so many exhibitions were shut which probably did not complete the experience. However the museum is free like many NZ museums, so that is a bonus.

We decided to pop inside for a quick look. Our quick look turned into well over an hour of exploring and one great find after another. The museum has some really great displays on Māori and Colonial history of New Zealand. We really enjoyed the fact that many of the artefacts are displayed in contextualised scenes giving you a sense of how they would have been used. We were impressed by the extent and acknowledgment of Māori history. We enjoyed the fact that many of the explanations were bilingual. Another highlight was the travel back In time with the old street set up with the store fronts. Some of the stores you could walk into. We also really enjoyed the display of period clothing upstairs. The building itself is a real treasure and the ceiling which is really visible from the upstairs mezzanine gallery is stunning. This was definitely worth a visit. Make sure you have a bit of time aside to explore this treasure.

How long do I need to fully explore Canterbury Museum?

Hi there, I'd say at least 2-3 hours. Although I love history, I prefer to do museums in chunks otherwise, everything starts blending together. Maybe spend a little time there, then do one of the open bus tours which begin and end there, and then visit another part of the museum. I find the museum deceptive - it is a lot bigger than it appears at first - lots of small rooms.
