This was a real eye opener, to see what the locals experienced during the quake was unbelievable. Its very well set up, can get tight in places when crowded, but really great to see how Christchurch fared. Take the time to read everything in there.

Brilliant.
Thought provoking and informative museum about a city in flux. As the new builds slowly erase the scars of the 2011 quake, it seems vital to ensure that stories remain live.
The video interviews 10 years apart are utterly engrossing.

We spent over 2 hours here and it wasn't enough. It was very moving to hear the stories of people who lived through that terrible day, and how the earthquake had impacted them, in some cases very tragically. Then later in the exhibition, you heard those people speak again about their lives, ten years on. I think it's a must-do if you want to understand Christchurch.

Definitely worth doing if you want to fully understand what happened in the quakes of 2010 & 2011.

Whilst I wouldn’t say this is a ‘must do’ in Christchurch, I would say that most people would find this a fascinating experience although a little sad at times. It was weird to think that the quakes were relatively recent. Lots of pictures and eye witness accounts of what happened. It was all the more interesting as the city continues on its rebuild journey and you will see what happened to many of the structures that are being rebuilt. The museum is only $20 per adult which I think was decent value for money. Definitely worth doing.

A fascinating insight into the Christchurch earthquake. Staff were welcoming and extremely helpful. There were some really interesting documentaries to watch with first hand experiences of the earthquake as well as lots of information around the museum.

Quite pricy for time we were there … an hour at €20 each but guess they need the funding …
Good to understand more about earthquakes and what they do to NZ especially the one devastating one in 2011 and timing wise with what has just happened in Turkey/Syria! Incredible only 185 sadly lost lives. Quite interactive and good to hear personal stories on the films.

I was a little skeptical because the museum is small but it is very well done. I learned a lot and found the films interesting. This is a great place to visit on your Christchurch visit.

This small museum is a reminder of the damage caused by Christchurch’s devastating earthquake. It tells how the earthquake happened, the consequences, and the stories of the people who survived. It explains the challenges the city has faced since the earthquake, the process of rebuilding, but ultimately the human narratives are what makes this stand out. Videos of survivors in the immediate aftermath and ten years later reveal the complexities of the human experience of survival. Allow yourself one and a half to two hours at the museum.

We really enjoyed our visit to the exhibition. The videos of the first hand accounts were really interesting. Having the two films being in very long chunk could be improved if there was more different places to sit and watch chunks throughout.

Interesting displays that clearly capture the moment and the effects of the quake. Personal story videos are very powerful, underlining the personal loss, tradegy and emotions of the moment. Full credit to the armies of volunteers, emergency services and unsung heros who came to the rescue. At the time of our visit the Turkey / Syria quake (two days before our visit) death toll was 20,000+ ... our thoughts and prayers to those suffering huge loss and hardship as a result.

There is a a lot of paid parking in the downtown area. I would park my vehicle and walk to the museum , the damaged cathedral , the 3 memorials , and the mix of damaged and new buildings in downtown .

I hesitated for a long time outside, because I'd intended to go in but then when I saw how much it was I was surprised and I had no way of knowing whether it was worth such a lot of money. I waited in case somebody came out and I could quiz them but nobody did - a young couple was also wondering whether to go in or not (they didn't). There wasn't much information outside and the building didn't look very big so in the end I didn't visit but I wandered around the city reading info boards and visiting other places.

We are coming up to 5 years since the Feb quakes and what a shame you missed going in, especially for $20 (around 9 GBP). This is the closest I hope anyone else would ever get to experience the life changing and devastating natural disaster we have undergone and explains why our city is still such a mess. We are finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and although we live with the daily inconveniences of roads, sewerage systems etc still being repaired we often wonder what tourists think of the place. Quake City does show real footage of the event (along with other exhibits) so if people have time to sit and watch these it is worth it. Unless a bit of research goes in prior to visiting Christchurch I imagine it just looks like a broken down small city with big gaps throughout and lots of glass nice modern glass buildings going up. I suspect people are unlikely to have any real concept of what happened here and why people are still affected. I hope you enjoyed your time in NZ and got to enjoy some of the beautiful sights :)
