Great walk with fantastic views. At the end of the track and a walk through the tunnel we came to a lovely wee beach with cliff faces all around and large rocks everywhere this is a must see and worth the walk

Absolutely loved this attraction. We were lucky to have a beautiful day; we could see for miles out to sea, the water that gorgeous turquoise colour. The rock formations, the seals, the gigantic seaweed amazing to watch and yes, the tunnel to the little beach was quite exciting. The path down to the attraction was relatively steep, with loose gravel so take your time going down. The climb back to the road after was not a favourite as it was a very hot and muggy day, so take your water and sunhat!

The hike down was ok, a little slippery sometimes and very steep decent…….the hike up was horrendous!! So steep, but I just counted 100 steps and took a breather and kept at my own pace! It’s a 45min hike 1 way.
BUT it’s well worth it. We had a great time exploring and swimming and checking out the wildlife, including a seal!
Check your tides though! Make sure it’s low tide.

Amazing place! Very steep down hill and uphill pathway. Takes around 45mins to 1hr return. Need good shoes and needs to be low tide to walk on the beach and through the tunnel. Saw a sea lion

Beautiful coastline, bay with stunning rock formations. Hard walk back up steep hillside and wouldnt be fun when slippery. Need to be prepared with right clothes, shoes. Worth the hard exercise.

Great spot ! Make sure you go during low tide so you can actually go down the tunnel to the beach. It is quite steep to get from the parking lot to the tunnel, but there are benches along the way and the view is amazing so it’s nice to take a moment and stop and look around ! Nice free activity to do in Dunedin.

A very steep track of compressed stones makes for a very careful walk to the tunnel. You need decent shoes and it is quite a hike back up. A reasonable fitness level is needed and little kids need to be supervised. After the track you reach the tunnel with very narrow steps that are covered in sand and water and can be very slippery. It is worth checking tide times so that you can walk on the beach. We saw two sea lions down there. One was sleeping in the small cave around the corner. A nice relaxing break. Then you have to walk back up the path, but it is worth going. Has a car park at the top.

Love this place! This was my third visit.
Easy parking at the top, gentle wander down to the beach. The gravel track could be a bit slippery.
The tide was coming in, but its best to visit when the tide is low - loads of caves to explore on either side of the main beach.
The hike back up to the car park is a decent one, but just take it easy and go your own pace.

We researched this place and looked at the tides before going and timed it right for the visit.
This walk must be done with GOOD footwear and on a day where the weather isn't raining and too windy.
The walk down is on compacted clay paths - these would be super slippery when wet as there is no steps. The slope made my legs hurt more on the way down trying not to slip than on the way back up.
The views are amazing and the wind that comes off the ocean is very strong. Dress for the cold.
The tunnel has steps cut into the limestone which are small and wet - take it slow walking up and down.
Its a great place to walk to - worth the workout to get there. Walking back up was a big cardio workout and I am so happy we took water and asthma medication.
Considering we aren't super fit still went up and back in 1 hour.

Lovely, quite and powerful place. Nice walk. Family with kids friendly. You probably don’t wanna wear white shoes at winter time.
Quite a big slope going down hill, proper hiking shoes recommended.

I have a 2 year old but I would still like to do this. Has anyone done this with a toddler before or would it be too hard for them. Thanks

I agree with the other answer. It’s very steep for adults so a pushchair might be a good idea unless you want to carry them most of the way up or down. It’s also quite far down to the bottom

Wondered if anyone could tell me is this stroller/pushchair friendly

Definitely not! Ok to go down but very steep and uneven surface and you would need to be SUPER fit to push back up. Hard enough to walk up by yourself!

For some parts of the track yes - If you have 4WD robust buggy you could... but it is gravelly and could be slippery in wet conditions ... also you won’t be able to get down the stairs at the end and it is sort of narrow

is there any public transportation from city center of dunedin to tunnel beach? if not, how much cost to take taxi ( round trip)? any input, appreciate it.

Monday through Friday days, catch the Corstorphine bus, getting off on the last stop on Middleton Road near Milford Street), then walk about 15 minutes to the start of the track.
We're not allowed to included URLs here, so just google "Dunedin bus schedule pdf" (see Routes 32 &33 on pages 70 though 71).

It's a reasonable taxi ride. There is no simple way from Port Chalmers. Perhaps see if a tourist bus operator goes there.

Curios to know why this is listed as an activity rather than under nature and parks?
PassarinhoAzul
دنيدن, نيوزيلندا1,179 مساهمة
Because it's a walking track. The track itself is maintained by the Dept. of Conservation, but the area around it is privately owned, not a publically owned park or nature reserve.
