We stumbled upon this trail totally by accident. There's only room for 3-4 cars to park to tramp up to Puketeraki Lookout. It was wild and wildy and wonderful - a true gem of the South Island. The trail is clear and easy to follow through brush and low growing shrubs, trees, as it winds its way toward the verge of Puketeraki Lookout which is truly right at the sea. It was a delightful hike and absolutely beautiful landscape. I do recommend downloading the trail from AllTrails or a similar APP as trails criss-cross throughout the hike, and it could be easy to get turned around. Anyone of reasonable fitness should be able to enjoy this hike. Also, like most NZ trails, be prepared for muddy conditions if it's been raining. Whether you are a tourist or a Kiwi, this is a lovely hike to enjoy.

beautiful islands -- very nice!! must visit. the ride bit rough due to no roads and constant car crashes and horrible drivers with no tire tread or bakes. still when u make it alive there, it is very nice.

Great weather made this a terrific day. The walk was fairly easy, interesting and above all not crowded or to too manicured . Well worth the visit.

Take the cost road to get to Karitane Beach as this is the most interesting and visually stunning way to drive from Dunedin. You get to cross and re cross the railway line 6 times as you wind your way along.

It is a lovely scenic drive out to the beach. It is a lovely, peaceful beach. Worth taking a picnic or popping into the local store on the way

Awesome scenic drive in this area, Karitane itself is a sleepy hollow, hardly anyone around during our visit, (peaceful0, be sure to visit Pa Huriawa (Historic Site), amazing views to be had.

A very strong recommendation: next time you are travelling State Highway 1, get off it and take the coastal route from Warrington to Waikouaiti ; not only will you get to see the very pleasant settlement of.Karitane with its history, you must stop at the Puketeraki Lookout. The views both north and south are spectacular and well worth taking the alternative route. And it is not just the scenery from the lookout that makes the route worth following. You will not regret going this way to or from Dunedin.

A great place to holiday with friends and family! Lots of options for all, great fishing, walking, swimming, surfing and boating. Cafe/shop is enterprising with a variety of options.

Nearest would be Dunedin 20km away, Waikouaiti 5km or Palmerston 12km. Just bring your BBQ and enjoy Karitane it’s a beautiful part of Otago.
