This fort in its present state is relatively new. It also has historical significance for it fired 4 rounds at a Japanese submarine during WW2. The displays are well documented and hold lots of memorable items. Well worth a visit whilst in Newcastle.

Good museums generally have a combination of interesting stories and original artifacts. This brilliant site has both in spades, plus some great views. A fascinating series of rooms tell the tale from the Russia-scares of Victorian times through to comparatively recently. The exhibit on the Japanese submarine attack on the town in WW2 was particularly interesting. There are also some tunnels which require a guided tour. Easy parking on site and an interesting hour or two to be had for history buffs. Highly recommended.

We went to the fort in the afternoon. It was very busy. So we were able to have a good look around. The volunteers were really friendly and had a few good stories. There was plenty of parking. A wonderful afternoon

Well well we'll l used to be a tour guide here a few years ago the place is still a major tourist attraction of Newcastle the views are amazing hour /city the winter whales on there way north a historic sight that saved Newcastle from a major attack in world war 2 when you visit go around lunch time as st 1pm the time gun gets fired @do a tour of the tunnels you won't be disappointed a definite must do while visiting Newcastle

This was a really interesting experience. The guided tour is essential, as there is so much to learn about the cannons and the defence of Australia. You would expect that sort of thing to be a bit dull, but it truly isn’t. Our guide was wonderful, and it is a real credit to the volunteers that this place is such a good attraction. Be there around 1 for the cannon firing.

Deserved five -star just for the view itself. Staff are very friendly. Bring your binocular as you might be lucky enough to spot some whales.

What a fun & interesting place to visit. The volunteers were all so friendly & very knowledgeable. The guided tour was excellent & loved seeing our children be interested the whole time. Please visit if you are going to Newcastle, it is such an important piece of our Australian history.

Worth a visit, there are tours but when we went there where school tours happening. You can walk around, on the second floor there are more rooms with exhibits. There is parking and if you have a long vehicule (trailer) park at the bottom (on grass). The view of the lighthouse Is just amazing.

We watched the 1pm gunfire and spent a long exploring the site. The staff on site were incredibly friendly and several of them spent lots of time talking to us about the different aspects of the site and related history. We are planning to come again as we weren't able to do the tunnels tour due to our timing on the day- we will travel specifically for this!

Hi yes it is open 6 days away from 10 to 4pm it is closed Tuesdays.

Fort Scratchley is open six days a week, 10am to 4pm (closed Tuesdays).
General admission to Fort Scratchley is free.

The only fee is to have a guided tour of the tunnels, well worth it though. The museum,firing of the gun and other attractions are free. It is a great place to have a picnic lunch with fabulous views of the beach, city and stockton.

Do they have wheelchairs for hire or can a wheelie walker be used?

They did not appear to have wheel chairs for hire but a wheelie walker could be used. If I remember correctly there is a ramp access to the gun emplacements. There are a couple of steps on the tunnel tour which could be accessed with help but the main access to the guns is by a set of stairs but as mentioned, I think there is a ramp. I was on a wheelie walker a few years back and I would have been able to do the tour, minus the main stairs of course.
