Today my partner and I finished the Three Capes Adventure Walk with the Tasmanian Walking Company. This was a 3 day 2 night adventure walk that started at Cape Raoul and ended in Fortescue Bay Tasmania.
I cannot emphasize enough how truly wonderful the experience. Logistically, everything was handled professionally and was spot on. The communication regarding the trip was detailed, accurate which included a helpful gear list and description of the hike. This information was very useful. A few days prior to the trip, they sent out a reminder and which included transportation to the meeting place. Clint arrived on time and was very courteous.
Upon arriving at the company, we were given raincoats, packs and other supplies. We then met our guides for the trip—-Frankie and Rosy. These ladies were superb. Each had their own set of knowledge, expertise and they complemented each other remarkably. This wasn’t simply a hike, they provided information about the history of the original people, the area, flora and animals. They arranged the hikes with plenty of breaks so that it didn’t feel like we were on a mission to get to the end quickly. The agenda included a wonderful boat tour where Clint took the time to show us the penitentiary at Port Arthur, and educate us about the coastline and sea birds. It was fabulous. Thank you Clint! Another wonderful surprise was on the last day, we were asked to hike about 45 minutes by ourselves to provide the best opportunity to connect with nature. I loved this part because to me, it was the most scenic part of the forest trail. Simply marvelous girls. What we also enjoyed was the diversity of the hike. We experienced tremendous beauty. Coastlines, capes, beaches, forests to bays. It wasn’t an easy hike but not overly difficult either. We were tired at the end of each day.
The accommodations were truly superb. The first night was a tent lodge. It was comfortable, with plenty of hot showers. The second night was at Crescent lodge and equally well equipped. Both had comfortable beds with stunning views. At the tent lodge it was cold because there were no heaters in the tent but with the blankets, we were comfortable. They had hot water bottles for those who needed it. You could hear the elements (wind, ocean) at both locations so if these types of noise bothers your sleep, you might need to consider earplugs which they provide. We were simply to tired to notice.
The food was fabulous. We had plenty of wine available, with quality food and dessert. If I had one area that could be improved is that I felt there could be just a little more in quantity. Dinners were an adequate amount but if there was more offered, it would have been eaten. I felt this mostly at the Crescent lodge. Lunches were filling, and fresh. Plenty of snacks.
Finally, we found the people we met were quite friendly as has been our experience while touring Australia. Almost the entire group was Australian and everyone was friendly and jovial. You all are the best!
We were very lucky to have experienced fabulous weather too. Can’t beat that.
We highly recommend this company, it was an experience we will it forget. Special thanks to Frankie and Rosy. They are darlings and made the entire experience.

I hiked The Overland Track with Tasmanian Walking Company recently. I had completed the same trip with them many years ago and had a hankering to return. The trip was all I remembered, and more. Amazingly helpful Guides (Beth and Linton) who were consistently upbeat, helpful and knowledgeable. And provided delicious meals. The weather gods were kind to us, which enabled side trips and lingering at scenic places. The one day we had consistent rain, crossing Pelion Gap, I was very pleased that I had brought along my own raincoat. Those with the supplied raincoats were wet, whereas I stayed dry. Similarly, I brought along my own backpack (Osprey) knowing that it fitted me, had all the features I wanted and was waterproof. So, if you're an established hiker with all the Good Gear, I'd recommend bringing it along. Huts are well appointed (hot water bottle, anyone?) and with fantastic reference material, other books, games and such.
I often say "you can't put a dollar value on happiness", and whilst hiking the Parks Tas huts option may be cheaper, if you can get a booking ... the comfort of the TWC huts and calibre of meals provided can't be under stated. To the side, though, Park Tas huts do look comfortable and have been recently upgraded.
If you have the capacity, and want to immerse yourself in this ancient and unique landscape, TWC is the way to go.
The track is a combination of some boardwalks balanced with hours of negotiating tree roots, mud patches, rocks and such. Sturdy footwear is essential as are gaiters.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience Awesome1965 and for your praise of our team and their delicious meals! It’s great to hear that your recent trip with us lived up to your wonderful memories. The Overland Track is such a special place, it warrants multiple visits! Thanks also for your helpful suggestions for our future guests, there’s some great tips in there. I have passed on your feedback about the jackets to our trip manager. This is highly unusual, and we are looking into why there was a problem on this trip. I absolutely agree with your summary, there is a lot of joy to be gained from immersing yourself in the wilderness, and we’re pleased to have helped make it extra special for you. Hopefully we’ll see you in this beautiful part of the world again soon. Warm regards, Shelley

We fid the Three Capes Adventure. Well organised, delicious food and beautiful views. The guides were friendly and knowledgeable and took the hassle out of worrying about things. The people we met were interesting, like minded nature lovers. The accommodation was comfortable- and everything was taken care of.

I needed to find a hike that fit the time schedule of my wife’s parallel horse tour and found this excellent option. As small group, two guides and seven hikers, meant we got to know each other pretty well over four days. The hike along the Bay of Fire of was well designed and executed. The accommodations were comfortable and the guides prepared delicious and nutritious meals. The guides did an excellent job of keeping us safe, on schedule, and aware of the history and biology around us. A highlight for me on the last morning was watching the sun rise over the Tasman Sea (after a life time of seeing the sun set in the Pacific) and swimming in the water with our entire group and guides!

This is probably the most well organised and professional walking company in Tasmania (and possibly Australia). I have done quite a few walks with them and have booked to walk with them again in March. The lodges are well located and top standard, the guides are 10/10 and the food is just unbelievably good.

Thanks so much for this very special review jolz001 and for your support! We work hard to provide high quality experiences and are very lucky to have a passionate team of guides and staff to help make it happen, not to mention the most important role of the wild places we explore. My partner and I chanced upon Tasmanian Walking Company when we were looking for a multi-day guided hike for our next vacation. Although we were hesitant when we saw the (substantial) pricing, we were attracted by the exclusivity that TWC offered and we decided to take the plunge. We went with TWC on the Overland Track in November 2023 and will be recounting our positive experience here.
Booking experience
We reached out to TWC through email but it is faster to contact them via phone call / their website chat. The staff we communicated with were professional and friendly. As it took us some time to work out our travel dates, TWC was helpful to hold the slots for us while we made arrangements. We made payment through bank transfer to avoid the foreign credit card fees and the transfer took a few anxious days to go through. Honestly, we felt that the booking process was a little cumbersome, but it is to be expected given that most of their customers are domestic travelers and hence their system is not well-catered for international tourists.
Pickup & Briefing
We opted to stay in Launceston city the day before our walk, and locating Chalmers Church in the morning for the pick-up was easy as there was a sign for TWC in front of the church. It was a short bus ride to the Red Feather Inn where we were greeted by our guides, Sam & Piotr, and where we met the rest of our fellow walkers. Sam & Piotr conducted a comprehensive briefing on what to expect for our walk. They also had us lay out the items we intended to bring and gave sound advice on whether it was sufficient / too much / too little. Once we were all fully packed, our backpacks were weighed and both my partner and my packs were around 7 - 8kg without water. Sam & Piotr also went around to ensure that the packs were fitted well on everyone. By then, we were eager to start our walk!
The Walk
It was a late start to Day 1 and it was past 11am by the time we arrived at Waldheim. The entire day was also pretty slow going as the group was kept together since Sam & Piotr had yet to determine everyone’s hiking capabilities. From Day 2 onwards, we were encouraged to walk at our own pace (which meant that the individual groups were well spread-out and it was one of the things we liked most about the walk). Everyone soon settled into a routine and either Sam or Piotr would be at the front and the other at the back. There were also constant breaks where the guides would gather the group and explain the sights and sounds along the way (we were fascinated to learn about the dolerite rocks!). Typically, at some point after lunch, one of the guides would give us directions on how to get to the hut. He would then hurry on to the hut ahead of the group to prepare for our arrival while the remaining guide continues to bring up the rear.
Day 4 was our most anticipated day as it had the highlight side trip up Mount Ossa. 10 of the 11 of us opted to do this, and it was touch and go with the weather for a moment as the clouds were continuously rolling in. However, the weather held and Piotr led us up the summit, much to our sheer delight. The lady who chose the alternate side trip also had a lovely day at the Japanese gardens (at the base of Mount Ossa) with Sam.
The Huts
Out of the 5 private huts we stayed in, 4 of the huts had a similar floorplan and 1 was different. There are 6 twin-share rooms (with slightly different layouts) in each hut and our group chose our rooms on a first-come-first-serve basis. The dining and lounge area is heated by a fireplace but the rooms are not. We spent most of our time in the dining and lounge area and retired to the room only to sleep. The rooms are cold but the sleeping bags provided kept us warm and snug. There are also 2 toilets, 2 wash basins, 2 showers and a drying room in each hut. The hot water in the shower lasts only 4 minutes which forced us to be economical while showering, but what a glorious 4 minutes they were each day after a long and tiring walk! The drying rooms dried our towels and anything else that got wet during the walk by the next morning.
The Guides and the Food
Sam & Piotr are definitely one of the main factors to why we had such an enjoyable time. They worked seamlessly together to provide the best experience possible for the group, and it is evident that both of them take great pride in their work. Sam is patient, informative, and genuinely enjoys spending time with people. He hung out with us every evening, teaching us the in-house card game and chatting about anything and everything under the sun. Piotr was constantly spoiling us with his culinary creations (Sam’s cooking was great too) and treating us with chocolate right when we needed it on the walk. Both of them kept the huts in tip top shape and we could not have asked for better guides.
The perishable food supplies for the group are carried in by Sam & Piotr. So after the first two days, meat was scarce. However, both of them pulled off masterpiece meals with what they had. Although some of the dishes were foreign to us, we enjoyed each and every proudly cooked breakfast and dinner. The food quantity was also more than sufficient but we would recommend walkers carry their own snacks if they like to have something extra to munch on during their walks.
Conclusion
My partner and I were very apprehensive of doing this walk as we were worried it would be too difficult (our longest hike prior to this was 3D2N and under 10km each day with a day pack). We also thought we would be bored having our days end in the late afternoon with nothing to do till bedtime since there would be no internet connectivity on the route. It turned out that both our fears were unfounded. The walk, while not at all easy, especially with an almost 10kg pack, was very doable with proper training. Among the group of 11, my partner and I fell in the middle in terms of fitness hence we were very comfortable going at our own pace and never felt rushed. We would say we were pushed to around 80% of our limit on the most difficult and long day summiting Mount Ossa, which made it a good balance of challenging and fun. It also helped that we had fantastic weather 5 of the 6 days, with only day 3 being rainy and cold. We arrived at the hut between 3 - 6pm each day and were greeted by Sam or Piotr with freshly made afternoon tea. After a rest and shower, it was soon time for dinner. And then some played games, some chit-chatted, some read and before we knew it, it was time to turn in. The next day everything repeated. It was a fantasy world and we didn’t realize how wonderful it was to take a break from reality until it happened.
All in all, my partner and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves on the Overland Track with TWC, and it has opened our eyes to embarking on more multi-day hikes. If you’re thinking of doing this, we would highly encourage you to read the trip notes that TWC provides. The information contained is very useful and it really helped us to know what to expect and how to prepare for the walk. I hope this review helps you to make a decision, and that you have as much fun as we did if you do choose TWC :)

Joined the 6 day Cradle Mountain Overland Track tour and had the most amazing time. The guides were awesome and simply great humans - informed, knowledgeable, fun and ensured we all had a memorable experience. If you are looking at doing this iconic walk using the private huts I recommend this operator.

Loved this experience and the company. Walked the Overland Track as a newbie to the multi-day trekking world. It was fabulous. The track itself was amazing - so much variety in scenery. Make sure you do pre-training to cope with the uphills and downhills. Our guides were wonderful - Jem and Peitro, thankyou! Somehow you managed to cater for the various fitness (speeds) of our group. Our guides cooked, entertained, chatted, gave briefings on what to expect the next day.....all seemingly effortless (but we know you are amazingly skilled). The cabins were super comfortable, warm and clean. HIGHLY RECOMMEND this trip. Oh, your shoes/socks will get wet - lots of puddles and mud - pack a pair of Sealskinz socks (waterproof) :)

Thanks so much Kylie, for this excellent review and the high praise of our guides. Your advice is spot on, hill-training is essential before tackling the Overland Track and puddles and mud are regular features. I'm thrilled that you loved your experience with us. Hopefully we will see you again soon.

This was the first time I had ever gone on any kind of tour before, let alone a hiking tour. Everyone was extremely knowledgable, the hike was an achievable pace, and I had to make 0 decisions the whole time. The food was excellent and so was the accom. I will absolutely be going on another tour with this company again.
