‪A beautiful, spiritual place to visit. So many ways to see it. 3 days plenty of time to do most of it. So glad they have stopped people from climbing‬

‪When visiting the rock you are blown away by the sheer size of it. It is without question breathtaking. Even from 30 kms away, you find it hard to comprehend that this is something natural, in a place that seems so far away from everything.
There is so much to do at the rock and try to spend time here at all different times of the day to see how the light changes the colour and feel.‬

‪After 6 months of waiting for this trip to come around, we were so excited. After a long 24hrs driving from the east coast of Queensland, we finally arrived at Desert Gardens Resort for 3 nights. This review is from our first 7hrs at Ayres Rock Resort, and I just want to reiterate that we are genuine, down to earth Aussies, from a small bush town, who enjoys a splurge here and there, but also don’t mind “slumming it”.
I booked this accom 6 months ago, at a cost of $450/night for 2 adults and 3 children. To us it was crazy expensive, but I figured this is not something we would do again in a hurry, and the website looked flash, so I was more than happy to pay the money for the experience.
On arrival, you can’t park at the front office, so my husband did a drop off and parked while I checked in. The line was long to check in, and I sensed majority of staff were transient staff, which was fine by me, as long as I receive good service. I waited a fair while as it was busy, before a staff member redirected me to the other end of the counter where 2 new staff members had opened counters. Check-in was easy as I had already paid upfront when booking, but was then advised that I would have to park our car over the road and lug all of our luggage to our room which was located on the the other side of the resort. When I questioned that there was no parking at the room, I was told a straight no, and that I could bring my luggage to the lobby and wait for the concierge to help us take it to the room. We figured it was easier to lug it ourselves than wait for the concierge, as there was only one and it was super busy and there were people everywhere.
Got to our room which was clean and tidy, nothing too fancy, but good enough for us for the next few days. Certainly not worth $450/night.
As we arrived after a long drive, we decided to chill out in our room for a couple of hours before dinner. During this time, we were in and out of the room, out in the courtyard and watching tv. The whole time we were in the room, we could hear mice crawling around in the ceiling (we were in a bottom floor room). Again, nothing I haven’t heard before and didn’t think too much about it.
Off we head at 7pm for dinner at Mangata Bistro & Bar, which is the only restaurant the lady at check in told me about, and said we wouldn’t need a reservation. We turn up, and there are about 35-40 people waiting around in the lobby, and the restaurant is packed. We walk next door to Arnguli Restaurant, but there is a closed sign. We mill around in the lobby with everyone else for a bit until I ask a fellow diner what the process is with getting a table. He advises they don’t take reservations, and you have to give your name to the wait staff to wait until a table is available. There is nothing anywhere that gives you this info. I witnessed a diner ask the wait staff a question about booking in, and they were snapped at. The wait staff are run off their feet, and there are nowhere near enough staff to service the number of diners. We grab a drink, and wait with everyone else for an hour before a table is ready for us in the Arbguli section.
After ordering our meals, while waiting for them to arrive, my teenage daughter sits up abruptly, laughing and announces she just saw a mouse run across the floor of the dining room and under one of the wait staff’s desk. We dismissed her, telling her she was seeing things, and to be quiet because that would be a health code violation and we didn’t want to alarm other diners. She then pointed it out again as it scurried back from the desk, across the dining room, along the windows and out of site. I was actually in shock. In all the places I’ve eaten, I’ve never actually seen a rodent in the dining room! After a while, I pulled one of the wait staff aside and mentioned it quietly, only to be told that they are native to the area and they can’t get rid of them. What the hell!? I questioned if it was a health code violation, but again was assured that because they were native to the area, it was ok. Like what the hell!!!!?
On returning to our room, we all then lined up for the shower. Gist one goes in and……no hot water. It was tepid at best.
Tomorrow morning I will be going to reception and asking to speak with someone of authority about the above.
As I mentioned above, I don’t ask too much, and I’m pretty easy to please. But if I’m paying $450/night, I shouldn’t have to listen to mice in the ceiling and see them in the restaurant that I’m paying good money to eat at (and be brushed off with the excuse that they are native to the area) and then come back to my room and have no hot water, in the middle of winter! Come on!‬

‪If you have the chance you should definitely visit Uluru. It is quite incredible and nothing really prepares for the size of this monolith and the beautiful changing colours.‬

‪Just come back from Uluru and must do for all. Did Uluru, Kata Tjuta and well as Kings Canyon. If you go, don’t forget to look up tours to Mt Conner. It’s the Fool-Uluru. On private property and limited tours.
We stayed at Sails in the Desert. And was a very good spot to be. Also did helicopter ride around Uluru and Kata Tjuta. Well worth the money.
To enjoy it all more, make sure you have some fitness as you won’t get into some of the more interesting places otherwise.
For those who have mobility issues, you can still do a lot of things but just not the trail walks.
People out there are so friendly and helpful.
Unless you are really fit, stick to the cooler/winter months. Also the flies will be really bad as well.
Fly in and out is the way to go. The airport is not far from Yulara town centre which is where all the accommodation is. From there you are about 20k from Uluru and about 50k from Kata Tjuta.‬

‪Obviously a must do. We loved the Rock and did the Base Walk. A must if you really want to get a sense of the place and the view the many changing faces of the Rock.‬

‪We experienced the Uluru Kata Tjuta tour. We booked via Emu run tours. Unfortunately I was appalled at the guide who told us we had one hour to complete the track and if we were back late there would be not toilet break. Our toilet break should have been before the tour start but this didn’t happen. This made an very uncomfortable day. As this should have been a pleasure. We did the hop on hop off bus later that week which was much more pleasing and half the price.‬

‪The 348 high sandstone Inselberg or island mountain is iconic and a must see. Originally named Ayers Rock by surveyor William Gosse in 1873 after the Chief Secretary of South Australia Sir Henry Ayers. In 1993 it took on dual names. The sheer size is evident as you walk around the mountain. Paths and infrasrtructure are quite good.‬
