We drove to this location, parked the car and saw where the POW camp buildings were - we were wrong. There is a map at the start that shows you where all the building actually were, and it is huge. You can walk all around if you want - there are signs that I presume give you a little more information on each area, but it was a tad warm on the day we went, so we just took a short walk to a few things within the "compound". You could easily spend an hour or so here, its size is quite deceptive. Everyone should have this on their list of must do's when you are in Cowra. In fact, everyone should go to Cowra just to see this facility, along with all the other amazing sights.

The information provided at this site gave us an insight into the way the camp was laid out and the way the POWs were segregated for safety reasons and their cultural differences. Whilst only a small section of the whole camp has been heritage listed, we were provided with information about how vast and isolated this camp was (even though only a short drive from the Town Centre). If you are war history buff or not, Cowra offers an honest review in the history of the breakout and the hardships experienced by the internment officers and the prisoners. The monuments from all four cultures involved are reverently represented.

You need to visit here while in Cowra particularly if you are visiting the other WW2 significant sites because it gives you a different perspective of the part Cowra played in the war effort.

The prisoner of war camp is a world heritage site & is beautifully signed & maintained. A must to visit when in Cowra.
At the guard tower there is a wonderful recording which gives a concise history of the camp & the diverse nationalities involved.

We were disappointed by the area, although lovely vistas, the hologram at the information Centre was much better. It needs more interactive displays.

Not much left of the site but set up well to provide details of the Cowra Break out. Worth the stop and find out about our history, Historically Significant and important to keep alive.

Make sure you see the POW Hologram Theatre, located within the Cowra Visitor Information Centre, before you come to the POW camp. It tells the story of the Cowra Breakout and its aftermath from the perspective of a young woman, and really sets the scene.
There is not much left on the site, but you experience an eeire feeling and the respect for what occured and those who died in the battle.
Bring your walking shoes and water as it is very exposed and the points of interest are along a walking track dotted with ruins and signs explaining what occured.
It is definately a place where all Australians should come to and reflect that this was the only time on Australia soil where shots were fired in combat. The brave men who left into action in the middle of the night only to be over run and killed are commendable. Lest we forget.

Sadly, there is not much left but the bare site but it was historically interesting and provided some details of the Cowra Break-out and the POW camp that held both Japanese and Italian prisoners. Definitely should be visited when in Cowra.

Out other reason for visiting Cowra.
The site has been greatly improved since I last visited about 20 years ago. Now there are great information displays and shade over those. There are paths laid out across the fields with some additional info stands; and loos and seats. It was a blistering hot day when we visited so we didn't go all the way around.
I had no idea that other nationalities were interned in this WW11 POW camp - apart from the Japanese. The stories about the Italian prisoners (why on earth were they transported from the middle east back to Australia???!!) working in the local area are amusing.
The greatest lessons is about the cultural differences between us and how the Allies had such a poor understanding off the notions of dignity and failure for the Japanese.

Lots of history here of the biggest Japanese POW breakout of WW2. A Very brutal event leading to the deaths of many of the POWs and some Australian soldiers.
