St. Mary's Church in Gdansk. Very nice to watch, but it was incredibly cold in the church, so we were there shorter than planned.

Beautiful church. Free entry. Used by locals, so respect the space. No hats allowed.
Spent about half an hour in here, lovely space.

We lit more lights for those who were close to us and who unfortunately are no longer among us. We went up the top of the church. 400 stairs one way. Was pretty narrow at the start up. A great experience and that view is really worth the money it costs to reach the top. It goes to a good cause, too.

Huge church inside. Quite busy and some interesting information and artefacts about its history. There is the option to climb up stairs to the top of the church for an open rooftop view of Gdansk which is very impressive.

Wonderful elaborate memorials and intricately carved displays, and plenty of explanations on clear signboards. A pleasure to visit here!

The Church of the Ascension of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Bazylika konkatedralna Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Marii Panny), or Kościół Mariacki, is the most famous and highest in Northern Europe. Built it for 159 years. The length of the temple is 105 m, the ceilings are 30 m high. The church crowns the 82-metre tower where the viewing platform is located. There are 400 steps to the site. It's going to take an effort to get a bird's eye view of the city. But the views from here are amazing all over the old part of Gdanka.
The church houses 512 tombstones and 31 droplets. It's where the city's richest and most famous people have been buried for 500 years. Decorating the church is the triptych "The Last Judgment" belonging to the brush of the famous Dutch painter Hans Memling, who lived in the 15th century. This painting was painted by the master for the cathedral in Florence. However, when the ship carrying the triptych from Holland entered the English Channel, it was attacked by a pirate ship from Gdansk. That's how the painting ended up here. In 1807, during the Napoleonic Wars, the triptych ended up in the Louvre, but then returned to Gdańsk again. The masterpiece of world art also had to travel during the Second World War. He was taken to Germany, but to his native Gdansk painting
returning via Russia and Warsaw. Today there is a copy of the 19th century painting in the church, and the original is kept in the National Museum of Gdańsk.
In the church you can see a medieval astronomical clock 14 m long. History preserved the name of the master of the machine, Hans Düringer, who, according to legend, was blinded. This was done by the "grateful" inhabitants of the city so that the master could not repeat his masterpiece for other cities.
The entire decoration of the cathedral – original, created in the 15th–16th centuries. By the way, the amwon – a small balcony for sermons – once decorated the church of St. Jan (Kościół Św. Jana). This temple was destroyed in 1945 and subsequently not rebuilt. To ensure that the salvaged good did not go away, the Amvonians decided to place it in the Mariatsk church.

The Cathedral of St. Mary of Gdansk, also known as the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is an architectural jewel that embodies the grandeur of brick Gothic. Located in the heart of Gdansk's Old Town, this majestic church is Poland's largest brick Gothic church and one of the largest in Europe1.
Started in 1343 and completed in 1502, the construction of this cathedral has spanned the centuries, testifying to the rich and tumultuous history of the region. With its impressive dimensions of 105.5 metres long and 66 metres wide, it can accommodate up to 25,000 people1. The massive tower, culminating at about 80 meters, dominates the panorama of the city and offers breathtaking views of Gdansk2.
The interior of the cathedral is just as spectacular. The starry, network and crystal vaults rise nearly 30 metres above the ground, supported by 27 robust pillars2. These vaults, decorated with delicate patterns, capture and reflect light in a sublime way, creating a serene and almost mystical atmosphere. The light that penetrates through the colorful stained glass windows bathes the interior in a soft glow, accentuating the beauty of the architectural details and works of art that adorn the church2.
St. Mary's Cathedral also has a fascinating history. It survived the Second World War, although severely damaged, and has been carefully restored to its former glory1. Among the treasures it houses is Hans Memling's famous Judgment Day triptych, a work of art that has crossed centuries and borders to find its place in this church1.
Visiting Sainte-Marie Cathedral, one can only be amazed by the beauty of its architecture and the richness of its history. The light that floods the interior of the church adds an extra dimension to this experience, making each visit unique and memorable. It is a place where art, history and spirituality meet, offering visitors a glimpse of the grandeur and beauty of the past.

Very nice church. The church itself is free but you can pay a small fee to go up the church tower. After climbing the 409 steps the views at the top are pretty good. The viewing platform is quite small and got quite crowded when we were up there

is there a cost to enter the church itself...my guide books says there is?
كُتب بتاريخ 18 يوليو 2016
There's a donation - but it would be very difficult to enter without paying.
كُتب بتاريخ 18 يوليو 2016
Yes, there is a small fee to pay go to the tower, but its worth it. Also please note staircase to the tower are very wide, but its a big unusually open space going up and rather not for someone with fear of hights.
