‪Took the train from Budapest to Eger to experience the valley. A train ride of 1 hour and 48 minutes through beautiful countryside.
Needed googlemaps to find and it was a good walk from the station
You walk through cozy village houses.
The valley consists of caves built/hewn into the cliff side. Very special. In the caves you could taste and buy the area's excellent wine.
The range of locations ranged from primitive to opulent wine cellars.
Was there in mid-April and it's a bit out of season. From June, all locations were to be open. But it was easy to imagine how atmospheric it could be‬

‪A great place to taste world class wines in one of world's oldest wine regions. From really "old school" wine cellars (Marika néni, No. 12 my personal recommendation) to high tech wine bars, you will find all you need. If you like classy rose, visit "Ostoros wine bar", if you prefer the real 70's atmosphere than visit Marika néni. Love them both.‬

‪4/9/23 Monday late afternoon

We three Middle aged guys from London wanted a wine tasting experience. We were tempted by the big Winery to the South-East but that involved a bus or 45 minute walk.

Furthermore there was not much open on Monday at all!

The helpful staff in the tourist centre suggested this valley. Off we walked on a Monday afternoon in the heat, a fair way uphill and then plunging into the valley itself, taking half an hour

Once there you are met with a myriad of small wine makers dug into the hillside as caves. The first one numbered is #2 ticked away in the corner. Carry on to the (two) little train(s) stop and walk up the far road up the valley. It was not busy when we visited, being just off season so many places were closed. The few open ones had lists of their wine bottles for sale. Done with lists of wine by the litre so don't forget your own container otherwise they charge you quite a lot a (200-400) for something you will end up throwing away/recycling.

We made our way up to the top to find a place that was more of an outside establishment with a wooden built terrace. A group were enjoying their wines there and an A frame showed a a litre of wine for 800.

I went in to ask the bar person whether we could buy the litre and sit upstairs to enjoy the Sun and the view. She said yes so I looked at their dry white offerings. Only one pot of the three was available she said which was Chardonnay (my friend hates this grape). I went to meet them to tell them the situation and to come in to choose something else.

The barwoman offered a taste of the Chardonnay which just confirmed my friend's personal dislike. We had to choose a dry white bottle at a much higher price technically.

The dry white wine we wanted was not chilled so we had to go up a grade to Hfl1990 bottle of Bojt Borhaz Olasrezling (the winery owner's own bottle). We also ended up buying an Egri Bikaver '21 (Bull's Blood with an 80s label (odd, it had no alcohol strength written) and a Bojt Borhaz Egri Cillag '22 which we tasted both of the whites first. Total was Hfl 5970 as they were all the same price.

One could not buy separate glasses to drink upstairs. The bar also had a range of palinkas too.

We were presented with three (unchilled) glasses and told that the shop closed at 16:00hrs, 50 minutes away but that was fine for us.

Up the stairs we found the convivial group had left already so the terrace was all ours.

We ended up having a nice £4.40 chilled bottle of wine on a quiet terrace with a view in the sun so cannot really complain. The barmaid came up at 16:45 to remind us, but we were finished by then anyway.

We left a bit merrier and made our way down to check out the winner on tap. At the very end as we left around #3/4 there was someone selling 1.5l for 1200 in a a container. We went in to see the wares but decided not to buy, cursing ourselves for not having brought out own plastic bottles (of which we have accumulated a few for refilling with water wherever (being eco-friendly).

We left the whole complex to the car park to view the extensive Japanese knotweed infestation of the tiny river. In a couple of bins we found two freshly discarded 1.5l bottles!! Rinsing them out in the fountain we returned to the far side and found Juhasz Pince to offer the wine from the dispenser (hardly a barrel) at a good price. We filled up both our 1.5l bottles, had a sit down on their uncomfortable chair and left quite happy.

We had a sit down first near the little train which was filling up at Hfl 2000 each.

We left the whole complex at around 17:05 passing the restaurants, some of which were quite busy, others closed. It took us another half hour to walk back, first up the steep hill out of the valley then a long descent back down into town.

On returning and getting home to decent wifi I discovered the particular brand of ('80s') Bull's Blood was around €2. I think that bottle was rather overpriced at €5! Moral of the story is do your research of buying bottles, check out Supermarkets, wine shops in town and take notes! The wine on tap is cheap though as long as you bring your own bottles.‬

‪What an amazing place! If you are in the area and love wine, you must go. Many wineries concentrated in one place. Disadvantage: you buy far too much wine and then have to think how to get it back home. Really loved the variety and wish we could come back for some more tasting. My personal recommendation: wine Ivan and Egri Bikaver in the winery 3; rose in 7 and 18; Egri Bikaver 2018 in 22. Really regretted that winery 2 was shut, I read good reviews about it.‬

‪This Valley is heaven on earth for people who love wine. It’s is pretty, especially the restaurants and bars that are beautifully build and/or restored inside the hill and have a cool and cave-like though modern feel to them. The wine is tasty and the prices are tourist-rated. It is a less suited place for small children. They might be able to entertain themselves for two hours in the playground at the top of the hill. But that’s it. There are road-trains that drive from the city centre to the valley. But there are also quite a lot of parking lots around the valley. We were there when it was not high season. Could be there are parking problems in high season.‬

‪Очень понравилась долина, обязательно вернусь сюда с большой компанией друзей, детям понравилась детская площадка и меню в кафешках, даже капризные детки найдут что выбрать. Выбор вин на любой вкус.‬

‪We were there in the middle of September so it was not so many people there or wine producers but it was definitely enough. Very nice, walking distance or a short trip by taxi, some restaurants and a dream for those who love good wines.‬

‪Over 40 local wine producers open their cellars here in the valley. There are some varying theories as to how the name was established but certainly after a couple of hours sampling local wines you begin to understand. Definitely worth a visit for any wine lovers. Not expensive at all. ‬
