From the outside, situated on lovely Szechenyi square, it looks quite interesting, but the interior is very disappointing. Not a mosque (it used to be) but not quite a church either. You must enter in the crypts, which are not too interesting, and go up to the church, which is not really nice.

You should certainly see this, the change and history inside. The history is right in the center of Pecs.

The building from the outside is very nice but paying to get inside doesn't really get you much. There are not too many things to see and not much information. The crypt may have the names of lots of people and martyrs but there is no information about how or why they became martyrs.

Very interesting visit to this historic building. Lovely welcome from the staff and a dual ticket to visit the Cathedral. Truly magnificent experience.

Kívülről és belülről is csodás épület. Rengetegszer átépítve de jelen formában minden benne van. Elgondolkodtató mi mindent látott már. De jó lenne megnézni mint egy gyorsított filmet!

A former mosque, converted into a church now...lots of history here obviously, but a beautiful building on a beautiful square, Pécs at its best!

16世紀にモスクとして建立されたハンガリー最大なオスマン建築です。セーニチェ広場のランドマーク的存在です。典型的なモスクでこの広場を国際色豊かなものにしています。

It is no longer a mosque but according to the history inside with interactive videos, it was first a Catholic Church, Saint Bartholomew Church, which existed already in the Arpad era, which is from the year 1000, then a second Saint Bartholomew Church was built in the late Gothic style shortly after 1387 during the reign of Sigismund. during excavations in 1939 numerous Roman bricks were found and more than 1750 human burnt bones, they were identified by an archaeologist as a Roman cremation chamber. Current research indicates that the structure used to be a bone house which was burnt down.
The Turkish invasion turned this site into a mosque in the early 1500s.
The second Bartholomew church was built on top of the walls of that bone chamber. It was 47 meters long and 24 meters wide. It had at least 11 altars.
Lots of history in this building...as it is all over Europe...changes, invasions...etc etc...
I find that Hungarians are very restless. Buildings get modified over and over...Lastly we saw a plan to modify downtown with a brook through it. Why? It is FANTASTIC as is. There is a superb tile work on the square floor. So they are going to break all that to place a brook? An unnecessary expense!
Back to the Mosque. The remainder of the Muslim era is present. The Catholic influence also very beautiful. One starts with crypts in the lower level close to the entrance, some as recent as 1980s, a bit of a let down when one pays to see a museum-like building. But overall worth being inside
