I was fortunate enough during a tour with a small group of Latvia to visit this amazing place. So close to Riga it would be criminal to miss it. There were probably only two cars in the car park when we arrived which baffled me as it's an amazing place to go! You walk through the woods for a short time before turning left onto the section of boardwalks. There are some missing planks for small children would need to have an eye kept on them, and it definitely wouldn't be suitable for wheelchairs due to this. If you are able though do the full 3.5km walk. There are plenty of benches along the route to sit and look out at the amazing scenery. The observation tower was great fun and the ideal spot to take some stunning photographs of the landscape.
Just make sure you take plenty of insect repellent as currently there are mosquito's everywhere, the little buggers couldn't wait to start eating us. No facilities to eat or drink so bring your own and take your rubbish with you. The toilets are the portable variety and I have to say were the rankest toilets I've ever had the misfortunate to see. Just walking past made us gag. So maybe find a service station or do a wild wee in the woods!

An extremely quiet place under the sun. A wild beauty but we did not see or hear birds. On the other hand, the walk begins with a forest passage that would be pleasant if we did not have to fight with mosquitoes!!! In short, a walk on the bog that deserves...

Absolutely not recommended to go in August. FULL of huge mosquitoes. Without mosquitoes it is not viable but even with the number of mosquitoes is impressive, they are also very large. Also I went on a Sunday: everything closed including the information point. Many barred paths. In short, between this and the mosquitoes I went back after very little... and I'm certainly not a girl who gets discouraged nor a bedside table so evaluate well before going:)

This is specifically about the hike on the Kemeri bog trail without any tour guides - in the August at least this was a hands off, no stress, all-you-can-absorb nature experience - the wooden trail through the bog itself had some broken planks but nothing unsafe per se, this is an easy 1,5-2 hour easy hike with some spectacular scenery (bring your phone/camera); no need to bring specialty footwear. There is just the 3 Euro parking fee at the entrance

Kemeri is well known for its spa facilities and in the natural area there are many walking paths. On an island in a small river there is a cafe' where we ate very good homemade ice cream (best ice cream during 6 days of travel). The lizard is called the famous phosphorus-flavored waterfall!

The nearly 5 km circular route from the car park is an experience that you will certainly not soon forget. After a short distance through the clear forest you reach the actual raised bog, which you roam on wooden planks. We were here in midsummer in the early evening, it was quite lonely and the atmosphere was mega peaceful, quiet and relaxing! It's as fascinating as it is magical. We have already been to one or the other moor in Germany, but this one is not comparable, neither in terms of scale nor texture (it looks exactly like you imagine a moor and you actually believe that you sink when you step down from the Buhlenweg). The only downside was the mosquitoes and brakes, especially in the forest, but since the moor can't help...

We went to Kemeri on April 30th. We took the train from Riga (it was a modern train with free WiFi) to Kemeri station. The station is in very poor condition, there is no info point. On google maps we searched for "Kemeri bog board walk tower" and followed the directions. We walked all the way there, it took us approx. 45 minutes to reach the starting point of the trail (big parking lot). It was an easy walk, the only tricky part is crossing the main road. The GPS directions are clear and easy to follow.
The bog walk is clearly marked and there are information boards on the path. You can choose the longer or shorter loop.
On our way back to town on foot, a kind Polish man offered us a ride back to the main road and saved us 4km of walking. Thank you, Polish man! 💝
A side note about Kemeri itself: On our way back we walked around town and were shocked! The town was empty, there was no one around except a few road workers. Many buildings were delapidated, part of the town looked like an abandoned ghost town but in between there were a new -looking school and kindergarten (we saw no children and it was 1pm on a school day).
We didn't know what to think, but then we reached a beautiful park, fit for a capital city (modern playground for children, many benches, paths, sign posts, gardners...).
We walked around a bit and then we found an info point in the water tower.
The lady there was very nice, spoke exellent English and was very happy to explain things. We asked her about there being no people around, she told us that weekdays are usually quieter and weekends busier. We decited to believe her, because we could find no other explanation for the vibe of the town😬.
On our way back the ticket office was closed so we payed for the tickets on the train. This time, it was an old school train.
We recommend the bog walk, it was really beautiful and a nice change from the crowded Riga.

Daytrip from Riga to Kemeri Bog
We took a morning train (09:30) from Riga to Kemeri. The journey takes a bit less as an hour. After arriving at Kemeri station, we had to cross the railway (to the opposite side of the station building), and than follow the paved road to a radio tower on the right side on the road. Turn right near the tower, there is a path into the forest. There were lot of mosquitos in the forest, we could’nt stop to take a foto or so. The path leads to a main road, be carefull if you cross it. On the other side there is a cemetery, you have to walk on a paved road near it. This road ends where the hiking trail begins.
There is a car park, toilets and a small information office, which was closed during our visit. There isn’t an entrance fee.
After entering the national park, you have to walk a couple of hundred meters, and than you can choose from two options of trails, a shorter (1,5 km) and a longer (3,5 km) option. The forrest is very nice, in summer there were lot of blueberries in the forrest. We could collect lot of berries, and we have made a fine berry-cake at home in the evening.
We took the longer option of the walk, the boardwalk leads near the watchtower. The view is beautiful from the tower to the bog landskape and to the small lakes. Usage of a drone is forbidden in the park, but a stupid couple used it, and disturbed the silence, the birds and the other tourists.
The walk ends where it begins: in the parking lot. The trail back to Kemeri is the same.
It’s a long walk but worth to do it.
We took a train at 15:30 back to Riga.

Caught the train from Bulduri to Kemeri €1 approx 25 minutes
Read reviews saying about very poor sign posted !
When we got to the front of the station it was very well signed as long as you know it’s the boardwalk
It’s about a 40 minute walk from the station to it
Follow the cut through there is a sign post ! Go to main road beware it is very quick
Past the grave yard and your in the right direction keep going
The walk is on 3 planks which were being repaired as we were their
Not really wheelchair friendly but people in a wheelchair will have a go at me if your a adventurous wheelchair user go for it
For a national park we saw very few birds and animals and insects
10 birds total 5 dragon flies a few beetles and a grass hopper
But the swamp was vast and a good walk

Is the park free or do you have to pay for entrance? and can I visit it at any hour I'd like to?
كُتب بتاريخ 20 يوليو 2021
How far is the lookout tower from the entrance and are there any steps on the trail involved ( obviously I am aware of the steps in the tower itself). Thank you.
كُتب بتاريخ 4 أغسطس 2019
Lookout tower is about 1,5 km from the entrance of Great Ķemeri Bog Boardwalk. There are no steps on the trail. Only steps are in tower (like 2 floors high). Whole trial is 3 km long.

Is any part of the park (walking trails/boardwalk) wheelchair accessible? Thanks for any info.!
كُتب بتاريخ 4 مايو 2019
I hardly doubt, but but much further away, but it’s rather narrow and some areas are not safe, I would not advice if it’s required a wheelchair access
كُتب بتاريخ 3 يونيو 2019
Yes. No problem to get your dog for walk

We are due to visit Kemeri and do the big walk today, is it possible to do in trainers or are walking boots recommend?
كُتب بتاريخ 27 أبريل 2018
If it is not raining trainers are ok. We went during wet time (snow melting), so paths were slippery - boots would be better choice during rains or early spring, when snow melts.
كُتب بتاريخ 29 أبريل 2018
Hello. Where I can find a parking for big bus in or neat kemeri? I cant find any information..
كُتب بتاريخ 16 سبتمبر 2017
Yes, for big buses there is a special parking lot near the famous bog.
As for the central part of Ķemeri, as far as I know, there is a parking lot near the Ķemeri Railway station (look for 'Ķemeru stacija' on the map). Buses park also near the so-called "Meža Māja", which is an environmental education centre located near the Ķemeri National Park (look for it in the maps) - several walking trails start nearby. There is also a tourist information point, WC etc.
P.S. Sorry for the late reply.

Do you Know if it is possible to take a thermal bath in the park?
Thank you for your answers
كُتب بتاريخ 13 يوليو 2015
Unfortunately, in Kemeri it is not possible to take a bath. But there is a source of hydrogen sulfide water. The resort has Jaunkemeri where there is mud applications.

Hi, Is there a regular train service to Kemeri station from Riga in September?
كُتب بتاريخ 16 يونيو 2015
Yes, from Riga to Kemeri there is a train (Riga-Tukums1 and Riga-Tukums2). Tickets can be purchased at the box office, it is possible from the conductor on the train. When you buy a return ticket, the cost is lower.
