This was in the top two most beautiful areas we visited in New England this fall. The other was Acadia National Park. We stayed at an Air B&B condo in Waterville Valley New Hampshire and hiked “Irene’s Path to the Scaur” in the White Mountain National Forest. This was graded a “moderate” hike by the All Trails app, but we considered it to be on the strenuous side of moderate. The trail was beautiful, well maintained and well marked. It’s a bit of a hike from the parking lot over a forest road to get to the trail head, with about a 500 foot elevation gain. The trail itself has another 500 foot elevation gain. Even with the All Trails GPS we almost missed the view from the “Scaur”. Had it not been for a couple hiking down from there, we would have turned back and missed it. When you come to a trail sign post, look up and behind you for a yellow “Scaur” sign, then head in that direction. We could have spent much more time here and will plan to do so on our next visit.

Drove through White Mountain National Forest in mid-October. The color and trees were outstanding. Must come back to hike and see the water, streams, waterfalls.

Very beautiful area! We did the scenic highway and made a ton of stops along the way for pictures! We also hike to a couple different waterfalls and a difficult hike for some views. Leaves were just turning as we visited. Great area for hiking and/or just driving and stopping at scenic stops.

Plenty of great spots to visit. Overall large area, some pull of spots could use more parking but plot things to see. Good place to explore

enjoy the spectaculars views on your drive through the forest. We made a lot of stops at various points to take in the natural beauty of the place which has water falls and lakes
just immerse into the nature when here

We drove along highway 112 and stopped at a number of sites - The Albany Covered Bridge, the Lower Falls, The Gorge, the Suspension Bridge near the Ranger Headquarters, as well as several areas along the way to look at the view. We were just passing through and we saw quite a few beautiful sites. I would like to return and camp (or stay nearby) for a couple of days and hike along the many trails or spend more time at the Lower Falls. It was definetely worth the drive through and I heard that in the fall, the colors are absolutely spectactular.

En route to North Conway and points north, I made a short detour to drive on the Kancamagus Highway, to visit Albany Bridge, and trek a bit in the White Mountain National Forest.
The Kanc cuts through parts of the White Mountain National Forest, so I saw some of it as I drove to the Albany Bridge and then on the far side of the Albany Bridge when I trekked a bit on the Boulder Loop.
My impression is that it is a well-managed forest.
I rate my experience in the White Mountain National Forest at 5.0.

My husband and I visited White Mountain National Forest this week for some pandemic-safe hiking because we heard it was forecasted to be peak foliage. We were so glad we did because the scenery was breathtaking, featuring all the gorgeous colors of autumn. There were tons of beautiful overlooks to stop at and a diverse selection of trails. We decided to hike the Champney Falls Trail and it was a lovely trail that followed the brook through the leaves to the waterfall.
This Forest is definitely a must-see in Autumn!

The White Mountains are a must see if you live in New England or tristate area. A few hours drive is totally worth it to see the natural beauty. It’s a great place all year long spring and summer for hiking, fall for foliage, and winter for skiing.

How scary is White Mountain Auto Road? Is it very difficult to drive?

Just drove the road a few days ago. It is not a simple drive. There are steep drop offs and no guard rails. The top is fogged in most of the time (the locals said), which makes it very difficult to see. On the day we drove up, we could barely see 10 feet in front of us - so we drove with our hazard lights flashing and went quite slow - just staring at the yellow line between the up/down lanes. There are many turns as well. But the difficult part is coming down - as even in the lowest gear, you need to put on your brakes almost all the way down - and from the smell, we clearly heated up our brakes beyond normal. There are many turn outs to sit and let your brakes cool off. We did that once.
The day we went, the top was, as mentioned, completely fogged in, and you can't see more than 10 feet away. Keep a hold on kids, if you go up here and the visibility is just as bad. Also, it was also quite cold, with snow on the ground, even though it was in the 60s on ground level. So bring a rain resistance winter jacket if you drive up to the top.
The other thing to consider is the cost. It costs $45 for a car + driver and an extra $20 for each occupant. So for a family of 4, the cost to drive up is over $100!
At the top, there is a look out - but of course, with it fogged in almost every day, you won't see much of anything. There is also a small gift shop, restaurant, restrooms, and museum. We found the building by first finding the stairs, then the first building was closed, followed by an open building with porta-potties, followed by some cars parked, and from following the cars, we finally found the building - again - because with the low visibility we couldn't see it until we were right near it.
All in all, I am glad we drove up, it was an experience. But, if you are afraid of heights and driving near the edge of cliffs, this may not be the drive for you.
Olá, estou pensando em visitar o parque entre 20/04 a 25/04, gostaria de saber se é uma boa época para a viagem. Nosso maior interresse é nas trilhas e views. Obrigado

Late April is good since tourist traffic is light compared to other times of the year. Snow often still covers the mountain peaks, so they will be scenic.. Snow often also still is on the trails at higher elevations. At lower elevations, the trails may have no snow . Trees will have no leaves in late April; they will be bare. NH 112 (Kancamagus) may be closed if snow is deep enough; if it is open, it will have the best views as you drive across the National Forest. Other highways such as US 302, I-93, and NH 16 will be open. Jackson NH has an excellent (and romantic) covered bridge beside NH 16. Conway NH has two excellent covered bridges also. A local visitor center (at Intervale) just north of North Conway has great views of Mt Washington. Several ski areas are in the National Forest; they may offer cross-country ski rentals and they may have trails for hiking.
Outras rodovias, como US 302, I-93 e NH 16, estarão abertas.

We are planning our July vacation and would like to stay in a central location in the White Mountains, if possible, and see Franconia Notch, Lost River, Mt. Washington, and the town of North Conway with its restaurants and mini golf. It's just my husband and I. We were there 20 years ago, but can't remember where we stayed. We also wanted to travel the scenic highway.
Can anyone recommend a hotel or central location? Thanks.
Red Jacket hotel is nice

Hi, we are looking to tent camp here for a few days early May, and we can't seem to find any campground that are open prior to the middle of May. Is anyone aware of a campground we could stay at in early May (perhaps they may be first come, first serve?)? No amenities needed, just need a place to pitch a tent (legally, of course).
Thanks!

Here is what I found, upon doing some more digging:
Lafayette Campground is located in the middle of Franconia Notch State Park, along the Franconia Recreational Trail. The campground is open for walk-ins beginning May 19 and reservable stays from Memorial Day through Columbus Day weekend....Winter camping is welcome; a vault toilet but no running water is available.
It also looks like backcountry camping is permitted (no fee) - just need to look into parking overnight at trailheads.
Hope this helps the next person looking for this info!

Wir planen im Oktober einen Besuch im White Mountain NP und möchten dort gern wandern gehen. Kann mir jemand Wanderkarten bzw. Wanderführer empfehlen oder sind die Wege so gut markiert, dass man auch ohne diese auskommt?
Hi there!
I know this is super last minute, but I'm looking for recommendations for primitive tent camping in the area for tomorrow. Just one over night stay. Wanting to actually feel like we're out in nature, not at a 'resort' style campground with everyone packed in closely and RV's everywhere you turn. Just me and my husband and our dog. Suggestions/Recommendations?
