‪Take the UNH trail from the parking area just off the Kanc highway. Gentle ascent to viewing ledges toward top. There is a loop trail at the top. Suggest you hike it in counter-clockwise direction. Ledges on SE side are best for long distance views and a lunch stop after about two hours on trail. Great views of Mt. Passaconway. Easy hiking -- no scrambling or climbing. Takes about 1.5 hours to descend down. Total distance about 5 miles. Trail wide, well-marked, and easy to follow. Good for dogs. Parking in lot easy during the week, can get crowded on weekend. ‬

‪Beautiful views‬

‪My boyfriend and I hiked the UNH trail counter-clockwise in February with little snow cover but a great deal of ice, so microspikes were in order. Lots of roots, some fairly steep terrain (particularly on the ledges, which were on the downward side for us. The view from the summit and along the ledges was fantastic.

This was a moderate trail for experienced hikers who are in decent physical shape (we're both runners), but probably not the best choice for those who are less fit or accompanied by small children - particularly in the type of conditions we experienced.

It took us about 2.5 hours with rest stops and a short stay on the summit.‬

‪What a treat!‬

‪My boyfriend and I hiked just yesterday and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We are not avid hikers and this hike in my opinion is the perfect distance. It is a loop and you can choose to either take the less inclined way up or the steep way up. We chose the steep way which was a challenge but enjoyable because we felt like we were really hiking. Be careful of all the roots. We had a great experience. It is nice taking the reverse way down because there are lots of views. Highly recommend!‬

‪The Whites are Tough‬

‪What is classified as moderate in New Hampshire is no stroll in the woods. Rock scrambles, root choked paths. The folks up here must not have a problem with erosion because there are no switchbacks, straight up for the most part. Anyhow, we took this hike, all fussing aside, because of the ledges. Even though you don't get above treeline, the views from these rocky outcroppings are wonderful. I think the mileage on this hike is suspect as well. We did it in four hours stopping for about 45 all toll.‬

‪nice hike‬

‪Hedgehog Mountain was a fairly strenuous hike, aprox. 4.8 miles round trip if you do the loop. The up is very up! We went around clockwise, saving the steepest part for the down hill, but I think it would be nice to go counter clock-wise, saving the view from the east ledges for after the summit. The east ledges were less crowded than the summit, and actually had a nicer view.‬

‪great views, challenging hike, must take the far left trail up the mtn‬

‪The most important thing you need to know is to take the far left trail up the mountain and then loop back down on the right side trail. Basically, what happens is that you park and then hike for about 5 minutes on a flat trail that leads to the loop trail up Mount Hedgehog. DO NOT TAKE THE FIRST TRAIL, instead keep on hiking and take the last trail on the far left to the summit so that you end up looping around to the right and coming out at the trail that you first passed several minutes into you hike. You want to do this because the trail on the right is much more steep/rocky/challenging, and much easier to climb down, instead of climb up. The far left side trail starts fairly smooth and then starts to get steep, but it's nowhere near as steep as the trail on the right side. The summit provides several different vistas with excellent views. There are other peaks nearby that I think are nicer, such as Potash and the Ledges.‬

‪Serious beauty and adventure‬

‪Spent the weekend ATVing the mountain and surrounding trails. I can't begin to explain the beauty of the area and the views from the top of the mountain. There is wildlife galore, and trails for every skill level. To get to the top on quads requires expert skill and first aid kits, as the weather and terrain is unpredictable. Be prepared to take some Motrin and heating pad action WILL be required the next day if you make it to the summit. The gentler trails lead you through verdant, fragrant foliage laden areas, and even our 9 year old was able to keep up with us. Across the street is the trail that follows the railroad which runs about 10 miles of flat, 4th gear riding for all levels of riders, dumping out at the old paper mill right near a restaurant, perfect for the after ride cold beer! Bring your cameras, you never know what you might see!!‬
