We had a ton of fun! While it was rainy most of the day, it didn’t stop us from exploring! My grandkids, son, and husband had a lot of fun! We will be back! Very scenic.

Huge forest with lots of trails, sites to see and places to stop. We hiked the Morrison Trail Loop which is a 5.1 mile trail. It has good hills up and down, a number of creek crossings, open areas and covered forest. Not an easy hike but not difficult either.
We also went to the Rimrock overloop and hiked the stairs and caught the view of the reservoir which was really nice in October with tons of color still on the trees.
The Kinzua dam was also nearby and a good spot to stop and look around. This was only a small portion of the park but was a good half day break on our way through the area.

We stayed Friday-Monday at Willow Bay. Originally we had site 66 but due to strong rains on Friday that site wasnt usable for our tent. We talked to the hosts who were working at the gate and they were amazing! Told us to drive and look at other sites and if we wanted/needed to they could switch us. We found a great alternative site 10 which you can see was spacious. The loop we were in was crowded but really you couldnt tell when you were in your site. Noise was not an issue and we were able to social distance with no problem.
We hiked Bent Run Falls, Jakes Rock, and Rimrock. We explored Kinzua Dam, fished Willow Bay and the reservoir below the dam, fished and walked Marilla Reservoir, and visited the sky walk on the way back.
If youre looking for ice cream while in the area there is a little corner store I think its TJ's at the corner of 59 and 219 I think. We got huge ice cream cones for 2.00!

We stayed Thurs-Sun. The weather was hit or miss but the campground was beautiful! We were in site 63, right by the water. We had teenage boys with us and they loved fishing and kayaking. The campground was full but it was quiet and everyone was friendly. The staff was super friendly. I went for a walk while the boys were in the kayak. I passed the lady working and in small talk, I said I hadn't seen them on the water. About 20 minutes later she stopped by our site to let me know she saw them on the water and they were doing good and not too far out. It was so sweet of her to check on them. I wasn't really worried, but I appreciate that extra effort. There is no cell phone service, except by the gate. The bathrooms were very clean and great water pressure in the showers. We did feel like that campground is a bit away from everything we went to see but it wasn't too bad. We went to Kinzua Skywalk, Bent Run waterfall...it's a little hike to get to the top, not a simple short trail like indicated but we had been hiking at Rim Rock before that so that might have had something to do with it! Rimrock was a fun trail. We didn't stay on the trail and made it more strenuous that I was expecting but it was a great time. I'm 43, my aunt and uncle are in their 50s and the teenage boys are14-15. Great time for all, even if it did rain half the trip!

The forest is second growth and around 90 years old...if you like nature without people around this is the place. Cool streams with native trout are plenty....go backcountry and you may not see other people for days a rare thing in the east. The forest roads are gravel but well maintained I suggest getting a good map for travel... camping can be found everywhere no need for a campground just find a fire ring on a backroad and enjoy the peacefulness

Beautiful scenery, great time of year to see all the trees changing colors, plenty of hikes you can go on if your adventurous. I suggest trying it out. I go every year.

Just off the road before you reach Kinzua Dam. A short walk up the trail to view many aspects of this waterfall. My husband and I visited in October after a rainy few days. Perfect setting with plenty of water gushing over the rocks. We love waterfalls and thought Bent Run was well worth the stop.

We visited a few of the trails, but Rim Rock by far was our favorite. This is just a beautiful place and is a must see in this area. We will definitely go back again.

The forest itself is free. The visitor centers are free. You can generally park at various pull offs, a couple of picnic areas and trail heads. BUT look for signs -- if people vandalize or if there is active logging/drilling areas may be closed.
ALSO -- hunting is allowed! Wear orange during hunting season, even if not hunting. NON hunters won'd want to come the first few days of deer season (right after Thanksgiving, but CHECK), except on Sundays when no hunting is allowed. (Too crowded)

We will be in the area for one day later this week. What would you suggest that we do? I have found that the Rimrock Overlook seems to be a stop that we should make. Are there any visitor centers in ANF? thanks much for your time!

I am looking to book the walk-in sites at Willow Bay in mid-September. 2 questions -- 1) how far are the sites from where you park the car? 2) I see a lot of posts about bears. We are clean and careful campers (never have leave food at the site when we are out and/or sleeping) but will probably have a dog with us -- any issues with that?
Thanks!!

I would call the site management teams on the ANF website for the information on the distance to some of the walk in site. It's been some years since I've camped there but travel in the area somewhat frequently. As for the Bears I've never had a problem with them bothering our campsites but reading the trip advisor reviews several people have run into bears at their campsites but were easily chased away. Some of them have been fairly recently.

Grazie
