‪This hike is one of my top ten hikes of all time anywhere! We did this hike in January when the weather was cool (cold) and the crowds were non-existent (we only saw a couple of people all day) Perfect!

This is a long hike...about 11 miles out and back. We started at the Elephant Hill parking area, hiking along a beautiful trail marked with cairns and periodic signage. There were a lot of ups and downs throughout the hike, but nothing too tough until near the end. A lot of the hike follows river washes up through the canyons, with unbelievable formations in every direction. Just when you think you've seen it all, then something else spectacular pops up. I would describe the Needles District as a hikers playground...it could NOT have been more interesting even if it were designed and built by engineers. Hiking in January did not really add any complications to the hike as the snow was not deep at any point, and mostly just made things more beautiful. After turning onto the last leg of the hike before reaching the arch, the trail gets a bit cozy, and even more spectacular. However, at the end, just as we could see the arch, some things did get a bit dicey. First, there was a place where we needed to climb a ladder and shimmy across an icy rock. We made it without incident, but it was a bit precarious. Second, there was a location in the wash that got really steep...almost too steep to scramble up. In the end we all made it up thanks to good shoes...but on the way down, each one of us ended up sliding down on our butts (unintentionally). Finally, at the very end, there is a fairly steep climb up to the top. This was made more challenging by the snow, but in the end it was not too bad...other than exhausting us. At the top, the view of Druid Arch is indescribable. Wow! One of the most unusual arches I've ever seen. The views are also great in all directions including back down the canyon we just came from. It was a perfect place to grab a bite and to relax as the sun started to go down behind the arch. We sat there for good long time drinking everything in...

The hike back to the car was very enjoyable as we got the chance to relive all the things we had seen on the way in. I highly recommend this trail for experienced hikers! It is comparable to the Chesler Park Loop Trail (including the Joint), and the Lost Canyon Trail...perhaps it is the best of the three.‬
