- RMarois54 contributionsWorth the visit but overly commercial and crowded in certain areasGeorgetown is a beautiful area of Washington DC. However we fond the main strips (M street and Wisconsin Avenue) overly commercial and crowded. We prefer the back streets which are much more charming and relaxing. The Georgetown University grounds is worth a visit and the waterfront is also pleasant. Although very short, Cady's Alley just south of M Street is very beautiful.Visited April 2023Written April 5, 2023
- Yossi RTel Aviv, Israel443 contributionsPretty houses, nice restaurants, shops.A famous Washington neighborhood. Nice colorful houses, nice restaurants, cafes, shops. The water front was a bit old. There was nothing special about it. It is recommended to spend there a couple of hours, strolling around the houses.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 7, 2023
- ELOVegarshei Municipality, Norway1,319 contributionsNice trip in the eveningwe visited this area for shopping. I think it was a nice area for shopping, but even better for dining? There were a lot of nice restaurants and a cosy atmosphere when we strolled a round there. Visiting Georgetown is best without rain.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 2, 2023
- Mrs.BaconMorristown, Tennessee259 contributionsGreat Shopping and DiningI stayed in Georgetown at a boutique hotel. This is a very safe area. We stayed right along the C & O Canal. It was a lovely area to walk through. So much shopping in this area. You’ll find everything from TJ Maxx to upscale shopping. Restaurants are everywhere here and you won’t have to walk far at all to find somewhere to dine. Truly worth spending an evening here to walk around. The Metro does not go to Georgetown so keep that in mind but you can hop on the DC Connector to get you there or you can talk a walk.Visited August 2023Traveled with friendsWritten August 5, 2023

The Circulator Bus only costs $1 and goes between Georgetown & Union Station. There is a great cake shop called Georgetown Cupcakes which does lots of different flavoursVisited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 10, 2023
- Boyd JMaleny, Australia1,697 contributionsPleasant to Stroll AroundWe caught one of the Circulator buses from downtown DC. There are six routes upon which buses come along every 15 – 20 minutes and for $1.00 you can ride the bus wherever you want on the route. We took the one to Georgetown, where there is a pretty port side development along the Potomac River and where there are many little shops, boutiques etc. Pleasant to stroll around.Visited November 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 24, 2024

Georgetown is the quintessential place when visiting DC; great shopping, but don't miss the cool canal walk behind the main shopping street. It has some fascinating history and is way more interesting than the shops that you can see almost anywhere, in any U.S. city. Skip the shopping and see the campus and the canal!

We loved Georgetown. We had dinner there almost everything single night. It was also beautiful to walk around after dinner.

Georgetown is the place of visit in Washington. We visited this area through a car ride. This will save time and exertion for visitors. All scenic views can be captured through a camera.

We took the metro to Rosalin and walked over The Key bridge, which I totally recommend for the beautiful view of the Potamac river
The town is beautiful and has two main streets filled with lots of lovely shops and places to eat
I recommend heading down to the waterfront where you can eat with the lovely view of the Potamac river
Also it has one of the oldest cottages in Washington, that is free to go around

We were told to drive up to Georgetown in Washington DC because there were funky shops and an interesting neighborhood. I have to say I was very disappointed, the shops were nothing special and there was not a good ambiance. I do not think it's worth the time to go up there. About the only thing of note is the oldest house in DC, now run by the National Parks Authority. We went through it and it was of minor interest only.

Georgetown is a beautiful place to walk around and if you have a significant income, a nice place to live. I have family that lives across the river in Arlington. They like to walk around and eat in Georgetown. They brought us to Georgetown during the last visit.
The architecture is very indicative to the DC area. It is also home to DC's narrowest house at 2726 P Street NW which is 9.1 feet wide. The river walk is beautiful and offers some nice outdoor hangouts and restaurants.
The biggest complaint from my family is that getting there is not easy via the Metro. The Foggy Buttom station is sort of nearby. Parking is also not that easy. There are a few parking garages, but obviously you need to pay for it.
I would not suggest planning your visit to DC around Georgetown, or even coming here at all if you haven't seen all the historical attractions and museums. However, if you have been to DC a few times or have family nearby, this is a cool hangout.

Georgetown is very beautiful with old houses and a lot of stores. Just wear comfy shoes and walk around. Our hotel was in walking distance to Georgetown so it was really easy for us to get out and have fun. You won’t need a car here.

worth going to for lunch or dinner and walking around. Most people who live and work there are so over other people, so don't be offended when you get dirty looks if you're dressed like a tourist. There's no metro access, but you can walk from Foggy Bottom or Rosslyn Metros. I prefer Rosslyn because the walk across the bridge is really nice and you get a breeze!

This is a great place to shop, walk around and eat. Very fashionable shopping area. Parking of course is a hassle. Several great restaurants right by the canal, including seafood. Georgetown cupcakes is awesome, crowded and fun. Visited the Apple Store amongst several others.

I have a few favorite neighborhoods in the world...Gramercy Park in New York, the 7th Arrondissement in Paris and two neighborhoods in D.C...DuPont Circle/Embassy Row and Georgetown. Georgetown has all the prerequisites for me: splendid architecture, great wallking and plenty of fine shops, bars and restaurants within walking distance. Transportation is convenient and the neighborhood is safe, in a city that has increasingly shed its former existence as a center of violent crime. If I could afford to live there, I just might.

Hi. How long does it take to walk the Georgetown Waterfront and the Canals?

Super easy. The Canals are about 2-3 blocks off M Street. You just stroll along them. The waterfront is another 3-4 blocks beyond that. Enjoy!

I have only 2 days in Washington and will stay close to the Union Station. Is it worth to visit Georgetown in a morning day?

You'd better get off at the Foggy Bottom station and walk to Pennsylvania Avenue heading to the Saint Stephen Martyr church (which is the Kenedy's church, and it's worth going in and getting some pictures of them inside) and from there keep going up to George Town

I’m staying in Cheater, Va for work. Should I drive a certain distance and then hop on the metro to get into Georgetown and downtown DC? If so is there a stop you recommend?

It has been a while; however, the metro stop at Key Bridge is an easy walk into the middle of Georgetown. May want to Google ‘Washington DC Metro’ to see the updated map. Hope you have fun!

1. If I am getting a uber to Georgetown, where should I ask him/her to drop me off at?
2. If I have a saturday morning there, what are the must go places?
3. Any nice restaurant for lunch?
Thanks a lot!

Spend some time on the waterfront! I love it as the sun goes down. And if it's not too hot and humid, and if you are up for it, it's worth walking to the Kennedy Center.

I'll be in DC for a few days and thought of going to Georgetown because of all the good reviews but when I search for stuff to do it looks like food and shopping (I'm going to DC for the museums but I do like historic areas). Is it worth the effort to make my way to Georgetown, any links/suggestions for things to do in the area? Thanks!

Hi! MS NW and Wisconsin Avenue brim with cafes, shops, boutiques, bars and restaurants, so its definitely worth spending a few hours there. If you like history, check out the Old Stone House, the oldest building in DC, founded in 1755. Have a look at the amazing gothic style university and the exorcist steps and house. If you have plenty of time, walk up Wisconsin Avenue until you reach the amazing Washington National Cathedral. Alternatively, take the metro to Tenley Town Station and walk down Wisconsin Avenue for about a mile and a half until you get to the Cathedral and all the shops and restaurants. Georgetown Waterfront Park is great in spring and summer for a drink or a meal by the Potomac River. Enjoy!

Best hotel close to the Memorial Day Parade? The Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill or across the street, a bit smaller and more charming, The Liaison Capitol Hill. On New Jersey Ave., two blocks from the Mall.

We didn't have a car and used the metro which was easy to use and Lyft. Traffic was terrible. I wouldn't drive. I don't recall seeing parking so not even sure that situation. But Georgetown was cool. We walked around and ate at tony and joes seafood on the water overlooking Kennedy center. One of our best meals in town. Enjoy
hola Sue, gracias por la informacion de georgetown, dc. quisiera saber cuanto tiempo le dedicaria a esta pequeña ciudad cuando solo tengo una semana para conocer Washington. Hay lugares turisticos baratos?

Hello
For the part of Georgetown only you will need one day. Do not forget to visit the "Old stone house" and also the old water path in the south with the 4 locks. Have fun!"

We will be in Washington dc in July. I would like to walk around Georgetown for a couple hours in the late evening when the temperature cools down to look at some of the sights like the canal, the waterfront park and the old homes. Would the late evening (about 8-10pm) be a safe time to walk around those areas of Georgetown?

Yes... you might need to be aware of the drunks and homeless but plenty of police presence. You should look into Uber or lyfte if it gets to late.
