I’ve been to some impressive churches in Europe, and the National Shrine is comparable in many ways. There were shrines to Mary in the actual Basilica that were beautifully adorned and a must see. Then below the church, there is a Crypt where the daily mass was held. It is hard to describe but all I can say is you must go-especially if you are a devout Catholic who loves Mary!

Beautiful church. Mass in the crypt church was great. Had a great tour guide! So much beauty to see. Loved it! Walking down in the crypt and hearing multiple masses at once was wonderful. Put it on your DC must see list.

I had seen this beautiful church online, but only pictures of the outside. It is definitely beautiful outside, but the inside of the church is spectacular. Masses were held while I was there if you want to join but just walking around and seeing this church was a great time. Don't miss this when you are in DC.

Très intéressant. Visite guidée (réservée en ligne le matin même) d’une heure qui permet d’en apprendre un peu plus sur l’histoire et l’architecture des lieux. Mosaïques magnifiques et endroit empreint de piété.

I spent an afternoon in and around the Basilica of the National Shrine and I could've spent another couple days and still not gotten my fill of this place. The exterior was gorgeous, nestled alongside Catholic University of America, which in itself is a very cool place. I only spent a short time around the exterior but will definitely spend more time when I go back. Inside it seemed that every turn led to new wonders and awe-inspiring beauty. I have been here before and have watched Mass online from the National Shrine, but I was still absolutely blown away by all that I saw. It reminded me of something a roommate once told me when I asked why the Church doesn't have simple churches; "beauty, along with truth and kindness, is one of the three transcendentals that lead to God. As such, Catholic churches seek to exalt God by expressing his glory through architecture."
Food is available but I am not sure exactly when (I was there around lunch time and it was closed off, possibly for a private group), and daily Mass and Confession is offered, although it took me a while to find the confessionals.
Overall, an absolutely jaw-dropping place and probably my favorite place to visit in D.C.

This is one of the 10 largest churches in the world, seating 4,000 people. As such it is well worth the trip just to see it and take in its sheer size and it's fantastic mosaic art work. This is a real, functioning church. It is located right near Catholic University in Washington DC. If you wish, call in advance to find out the Mass or confession schedule. I walked past one of the side chapels as Eucharistic adoration was just ending and remained for that. The outside of the church is traditional. The interior church is done in a contemporary but not unpleasant style. Much beautiful polished beige marble is EVERYWHERE. That contemporary material is well balanced by the traditional stained glass windows and the mosaics. All the side chapels have the most magnificent detailed mosaics. Even the ceilings are full of mosaics. Everything is planned down to the most tiny detail and tasteful. Especially amazing is the large figure of Jesus on the ceiling of the dome by the main altar. I have never seen anything of such size and power. I took the almost hour long tour, which is free and begins near the gift shop. The tours are periodic throughout the day so again call in advance to see if one fits into your schedule. Depending upon the time of year you may need a reservation. The docent who took my small group was very knowledgeable. In the lower lever is what they call the "crypt" area, but unfortunately we could not venture inside as Mass was taking place there at that moment. I gathered Mass is often held there rather than the much larger formal church area. The side chapels vary in size and theme, but all are interesting and many will be familiar to Catholics like the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, or Our Lady of Guadalupe. Catholics will be especially happy they took the time to visit this place. If you are not Catholic I believe you will still be glad you came to admire the architecture and art work. Not to be missed!!

Was here June 4 with a group of music students from Mt. Pleasant High School in Iowa . Our Chamber Choir sang for 20 minutes and all were impressed with the wonderful acoustics this place has. The basilica is most beautiful, as is the surrounding grounds. Free admission. Free parking and lots of room for several motor coaches. If in the area, this is a must see.

Very very large. Outstanding art works. Most of the artwork is made from small pieces of colored tiles. Absolutely magnificant display of artwork. Spend several hours wondering around this beautiful basilica. Outstanding tour guide. He was fun and exciting with an endless knowlegde of all the wonderful teasures there.

There is an excellent cafeteria near the gift shop but I don't remember that there is an Italian dish. Nearby, though not close, is Monroe St which has a number of restaurants. Not sure any of them are Italian, though.

Can anyone please recommend a hotel near the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception ?

The Shrine is not near many hotels. DC is outrageously expensive. I’d stay at BWI and take the train then Uber or Lyft from Union Station.

can you park at the basillica and take the metro to see the white house or is there a limit on time on the free parking lot? Im a senior and coming with grandchild, id like to kill two birds with one stone, take her to see the cathederal and the white house

We parked on the street and there was no limit. The White House is quite a distance from the Basilica and it would be difficult to time it right to meet your entry time at the WH.

Would it be acceptable to visit with a small group (including 2 under 10 children) on Sunday morning?? We are not Catholic, but would love to see this beautiful place, but don’t want to be disrespectful.

Of course. Many groups come to the Basilica to visit and tours are given as well. There is a cafe and gift shop too. It is a big place.

Is it better to take public transportation from Crystal City or to drive? We will be tired from a 7 hour drive ... . Would like to see the Basilica as our first stop for our DC trip, a Tuesday in the late afternoon 4-6pm.

Moving around in the Washington area between 4 to 6 pm is always a challenge. Public transport let's someone else do the driving.
I would like to bring a busload of Senior Citizens (Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville, MD) to tour the Basilica and the Franciscan Monastery in the Spring. Would it be possible to do both in the same day? Parking for bus? Lunch - picnic or restaurant?

It would be possible to visit both in the same day. You could arrange a tour for one in the morning and the other after lunch. I do not know if either place has picnic facilities. But you can get a reasonable cost cafeteria lunch. I know this is available at the Basilica but am not sure of eating at the Franciscan Monastery. Both places have excellent parking for buses.

How crowded are the masses during Holy Week? I want to attend Solemn Mass on Palm Sunday and wondered how early I should plan to arrive to get seats.

We went for Easter Sunday Mass. what we did was get there early and tour around outside and in the crypt/chapels/artworks underground while one of the earlier masses were on. Then we went up just as the mass finished and got a seat right at the front. After mass we explored the rest of the basilica. By doing that you are being the tourist and the good Catholic at the same time and not wasting your time.

Is the cathedral decorated for Christmas? Are the side chapels also decorated?
