Great area to have fun riding, lots of camping spots and fun trails with lots of signage. When the lake bed is dry you can drive on it and it also has no speed limit! Fun, Fun, Fun!!!!

We saw this on a map, and it was near where we were staying, so we thought we'd check it out. It's an enormous dried up lake that is primarily used by people who want to drive fast! We stopped by late one afternoon after the toll booth was closed, so we went in to see what it was all about. A few people were kicking up some dust in the distance, driving OHVs, motorcycles, dune buggies, etc. There are actual racing events scheduled there from time to time, but not during our vacation. My husband felt too guilty for not paying that he barely wanted to get out of the car, but I coaxed him to get out and take some pictures. The mudcracked dirt was pretty cool, and NO plants were growing in the actual lake bed part...thought that was kinda weird since desert plants are around the perimeter. So kinda cool but it wouldn't have been worth the $15 day pass for us.

A few times a year speedfreaks from all over the US come together to race their vehicles at the Mirage dry lake. As the Bonneville flats are getting rained out more and more El Mirage is a great alternative to watch the racers have a go. The atmosphere among racers and public is great, take some drinks and food with you as vendors aren't always there, but great fun is assured! Put it on your bucketlist! Race dates can be found on the SCTA website

Been over 30 years and lots have changed. I guess there is a ranger station now guarding this huge desert area.
If you love the hot temperature and have an Rv it's great. I like the peace out there.

My family and I have visited El Mirage several times and they recently updated their bathrooms plus built a training area near the ranger station. We ride quads and dirt bikes and I love that there's not only hills but also the dry lake bed we race each other with.
We recently helped a woman who had fallen ... (I think the alcohol had a lot to with it) and was again grateful to have a ranger station so close by.

The ride here from LA itself was super nice. Nice to see more of the Californian landscape. This dry lake is pretty cool to see, you can get cool photos out there. You can also drive as fast as you want out there, if you're into that.

El Mirage dry lake bed has been home to Land Speed Racing (LSR) for more than half a century. The Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) was born here. Great place to watch competitors seek the elusive speed.

Always a great time out on the dry lake bed. The folks at the entrance are friendly and the crew that sets up the time trials are awesome .

Potentially very stupid question - can you drive in if you don't actually want to ride, just watch people drifting and take photos etc? I assume you still have to pay to enter even if you're not going to ride?

The entrance has a gate. Guard at the gate. I suppose after hours you may get in but there are signs posted about fines without a ticket.$20 fee to enter for 24 hours.
